Inspect Shift Lever Operation

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON and depress the brake pedal.
  2. When shifting it to each position, make sure that the shifting lever moves smoothly, can be moderately operated and the position indicator displays correctly.

Positions which can be operated without pressing the shift lever knob button R --> N --> D, B --> D --> N

Positions which can be operated only by pressing the shift lever knob button D --> B, P --> R, N --> R --> P

Adjust Shift Lever Operation

  1. Remove the steering column lower cover and instrument lower finish panel RH (See «REMOVAL»(ref-128016-S00008247052001110100000), «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (PRIUS)»(ref-127869-S07209549292001110500000) ).
  2. Shift into the P position.
  3. Loosen the control cable adjusting nut.
  4. Release the parking brake and push the vehicle back and forth to check that it does not move.
  5. After the check, depress the brake pedal.
  6. While pushing the shift lever toward P range side, lightly pull the rod of the control cable once and release it.
  7. While pushing the shift lever toward P range side, tighten the adjusting part of the control cable.
  8. Install the steering column lower cover and instrument lower finish panel RH (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-128016-S03531592042001110100000), «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (PRIUS)»(ref-127869-S07209549292001110500000) ).

  1. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY Connect the shift lever assembly and transmission control cable (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-128016-S19582534242001110100000) ). Connect the shift lever connector. Install the shift lever assembly with the 3 bolts. see scheme 164: Installing Shift Lever Assembly Torque: 8.0 N.m (82 kgf.cm, 71 in..lbf)
  2. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH (See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-128016-S12447986662001110100000) )
  3. INSTALL COLUMN LOWER AND UPPER PANELS (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-128016-S03531592042001110100000) )
  4. INSTALL INSTRUMENT LOWER FINISH PANEL (See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (PRIUS)»(ref-127869-S07209549292001110500000) )
  5. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-128016-S19582534242001110100000) )
  6. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-128016-S19582534242001110100000) )

  1. INSPECT SHIFT POSITION SENSOR Remove the steering column upper cover and lower cover. Disconnect the shift position sensor connector. Check continuity between terminals shown in «SHIFT POSITION SENSOR TERMINALS CONTINUITY SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-205827-S09657279832005112200000) when the shift lever is moved to each position (Scheme 3): Identifying Shift Position Sensor Connector Terminals SHIFT POSITION SENSOR TERMINALS CONTINUITY SPECIFICATIONS Shift Position Terminal No. to continuity Terminal No. to continuity P 1-2 3-8-9 R 1-4 3-8-9 N 1-5 3-8-9 D 1-6 3-8-9 B 1-7 3-8-9 Connect the shift position sensor connector. Install the steering column upper cover and lower cover.
  2. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at each terminal. NOTE: Do not disconnect the ECU connector. 3. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID Disconnect the solenoid connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals. (Scheme 5): Measuring Resistance Between Shift Lock Solenoid Connector Terminals Standard resistance: 29 - 35 ohms If the resistance value is not as specified, replace the solenoid. Apply battery positive voltage between terminals. Check the operation. (Scheme 6): Inspecting Shift Lock Solenoid Operation If the solenoid does not operate, replace the solenoid noise can be heard from the solenoid.
  4. INSPECT KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID Disconnect the solenoid connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals 3 and 4. Standard resistance: 12.5 - 16.5 ohms If the resistance value is not as specified, replace the solenoid. (Scheme 7): Identifying Key Interlock Solenoid Connector Terminals Apply battery positive voltage between the terminals 3 and 4. Check that an operation sound can be heard from the solenoid. see scheme 171: Inspecting Key Interlock Solenoid Operation If the solenoid does not operate, replace the solenoid.
  5. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL SWITCH

Check that there is continuity between terminals.
