Disassembly (Corolla)

Place steering column assembly in vise. Remove key cylinder illumination assembly. Center punch and drill into both steering column bracket bolts. Use screw extractor to remove bolts. (Scheme 7) Remove column upper bracket and upper clamp.

Reassembly (Corolla)

To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Install and tighten all bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  1. Place match marks on steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly and steering shaft universal joint assembly. Remove bolt and steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly.
  2. Remove No. 2 steering column hole cover sub-assembly. Place match marks on steering shaft universal joint assembly and main shaft assembly. Remove bolt and steering shaft universal joint assembly from main shaft assembly.
  3. On models with illuminated entry system, remove key cylinder lamp assembly. On models with engine immobilizer system, widen claw hung on upper bracket.039" (1.00 mm). Pull transponder key amplifier toward rear of vehicle with claw open.
  4. On all models, center punch and drill into both steering column bracket bolts. Use screw extractor to remove bolts. Remove steering column upper clamp. (Scheme 8)
  5. Using snap ring expander, remove steering main shaft snap ring on outer side. Using brass bar and hammer, remove steering main shaft assembly and main shaft bushing. Using snap ring expander, remove steering main shaft snap ring on inner side. (Scheme 8) Check main shaft length. Main shaft length should be 19.807-19.885" (503.10-505.10 mm).
  6. Place ignition switch lock cylinder at ACC position. Push down stop pin with screwdriver, and pull out cylinder assembly. Separate unlock warning switch assembly connector from ignition or starter switch assembly. Remove unlock warning switch assembly by pushing up center part and releasing 2 claws.
  7. Disengage secondary locking device. Using small screwdriver, disengage locking lug of terminals No. 2 and 4, and pull terminals out from unlock warning switch assembly rear side. (Scheme 9)
  8. Remove 2 screws and key interlock solenoid from steering column bracket assembly. Remove ignition or starter switch assembly.

Reassembly (Tacoma)

  1. If replacing column tube bushing, coat inside of NEW bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium-based grease. Align projections on bushing with holes in column tube, and install bushing until projections are engaged.
  2. Coat all rotating surfaces with molybdenum disulfide lithium-based grease. Install column shift lever assembly and turn signal bracket.
  3. Install NEW snap ring to shaft assembly. Install shaft assembly into column tube. Install NEW second snap ring to retain shaft assembly in column.
  4. Install upper bracket and clamp, using 2 NEW taper-head screws. Tighten until screw heads break off. Install and tighten all bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-127934-S09874421372001103100000) .

Scheme 10: Disassembly (Tundra)
  1. Place steering column assembly in vise. Remove clip and key cylinder lamp assembly. Using punch, mark center of 2 tapered-head bolts. Drill out 2 bolts. Remove 2 bolts, using screw extractor. Remove column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
  2. On models equipped with A/T, remove shift lever, upper No. 2 steering cover, park lock cable assembly and shift lever housing. (Scheme 10) Remove 4 Torx bolts and column upper tube with main shaft assembly from column tube assembly.
  3. On models equipped with A/T, remove 4 Torx bolts and steering column housing support. On all models, to remove column tube support, remove bolt and washer. Remove column tube support with lower column tube attachment. Remove lower column tube attachment from column tube support.
  4. Remove main shaft stopper and assembly. Ensure shaft assembly does not rotate. Using screwdriver, remove retaining ring. Remove spring retainer and compression spring.

Reassembly (Tundra)

  1. Install compression ring and spring retainer. Ensure main shaft assembly does not rotate. Install main shaft stopper. Install NEW lower column tube attachment, bolt and washer to column tube support.
  2. On models equipped with A/T, install steering column housing support. Install 4 NEW Torx bolts. On all models, install column upper tube with main shaft assembly to column tube assembly. Install 4 NEW Torx bolts.
  3. Install turn signal bracket with 2 NEW Torx screws. On models equipped with A/T, install park lock cable assembly, shift lever housing with 3 NEW Torx screws, upper No. 2 steering cover and shift lever with NEW Torx screw.

Disassembly (4Runner)

  1. Place steering column assembly in vise. Remove transponder key coil with key cylinder illumination assembly. Center punch and drill into both steering column bracket bolts. Use screw extractor to remove bolts.
  2. Remove snap ring. Using soft-face hammer, tap shaft assembly from column tube. Remove following snap ring. (Scheme 11)

Reassembly (4Runner)

  1. Install NEW snap ring to shaft assembly. Install shaft assembly into column tube. Install NEW second snap ring to retain shaft assembly in column.
  2. Coat inside of new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium-based grease.
  3. Install column upper bracket and clamp, using 2 NEW taper-head screws. Tighten until screw heads break off.
  4. Install transponder key coil and key cylinder illumination assembly. Install and tighten all bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-127934-S09874421372001103100000) .
