SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

  1. PRECAUTION FOR REGISTRATION If replacing any of the following parts, refer to the registration procedures. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#engine-immobiliser-system-diagnostics-introduction) .   2. SYSTEM FUNCTION Function Outline Ignition function When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is brought into the vehicle and verified, this function changes the power source or starts the hybrid control system when the power switch and brake pedal are operated. Auxiliary battery saving function for vehicle When the vehicle is not used for a long time, this function extends the interval between each periodic transmission of the request signal, or stops transmission of the request signal to save auxiliary battery power. When 5 days elapse without a response from the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key), periodic transmission stops. When 14 days elapse without a response from the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key), the lock/unlock sensors of all door outside handle assemblies except the driver door are disabled. If 10 minutes or more elapse while the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the detection area (including the vehicle interior), smart key system automatically deactivates the exterior detection area that the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in. Transmitter battery saving function If a switch on the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is depressed and held, this function stops transmission of the signal after approximately 20 seconds to save transmitter battery power. Key cancel function Cancels the smart key system when certain operations are performed. Immobiliser function Allows the hybrid control system to be started only using registered electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) to prevent an unauthorized hybrid control system start. Automatic power off function With park (P) selected and the power switch on (ACC) or on (IG) (the hybrid control system is not started and the vehicle is not moving), the power automatically turns off when the vehicle is left as is for 60 minutes or more.
  3. DETECTION AREA NOTE: Depending on the vehicle body shape, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) may not operate in certain locations. Even if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the vehicle exterior key detection area, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) may not be properly detected if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is near a window, a door handle or the center of the rear bumper. Even if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the vehicle interior key detection area, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) may not be properly detected if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is on the instrument panel, in the glove box or on the floor. Depending on the way the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is held, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) may not operate properly. The key detection area may reduce in size or the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) may not be properly detected under the conditions below: The transmitter battery is depleted. There are TV towers, electric power plants, broadcasting stations, gas stations or other facilities that produce strong electric waves nearby. Wireless products such as cell phones, etc. are carried with the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key). The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is covered by or in contact with a metal object. Electric wave-type keyless entry systems are being operated nearby. The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is placed near high-voltage equipment or equipment that emits electrical noise. The request signal sent from the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) is transmitted from each electrical key antenna (outside) to form the smart key detection area. The detection area formed by each electrical key antenna (outside) has a detection range of 0.7 to 1 m (2.30 to 3.28 ft.) from the door handles and rear bumper* (electrical key antenna [outside luggage]). *: w/ Except driver's door only smart key system When the vehicle is parked (the power is off and the doors are locked*), the detection area of each electrical key antenna (outside) is formed by emitting a periodic request signal every 0.25 seconds in order to detect the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key). Also, when the doors are locked and a lock sensor is touched, a request signal is emitted, the detection area outside the vehicle is formed and the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is detected. HINT: *: The smart key system controls each door individually. After a door is locked with the door lock sensor or wireless remote control function, a detection area is formed at the locked door even if all the doors are not locked. The detection area of the electrical key antenna (outside luggage) is formed when the back door opener switch is pressed*. *: w/ Except driver's door only smart key system The detection area inside the vehicle is formed and the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is detected when any of the following conditions are met: 1) The driver door is opened and closed, 2) the brake pedal is depressed, 3) the power switch is operated, 4) the conditions required for various warnings are met, or 5) a smart door lock operation is performed. The detection area inside the vehicle when starting the hybrid control system can be customized through the customize function.

HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING

  1. Use these procedures to troubleshoot the smart key system (for Start Function).

  2. CUSTOMER PROBLEM ANALYSIS CHECK HINT: In troubleshooting, confirm that the problem symptoms have been accurately identified. Preconceptions should be discarded in order to make an accurate judgment. To clearly understand what the problem symptoms are, it is extremely important to ask the customer about the problem and the conditions at the time the malfunction occurred. Gather as much information as possible for reference. Past problems that seem unrelated may also help in some cases. The following 5 items are important points for problem analysis: What Vehicle model, system name When Date, time, occurrence frequency, whether the problem occurred recently or has been occurring for a long time Where Whether the problem occurs at a specific location Under what conditions? Whether the doors were locked or unlocked, whether the power switch was on, whether the hybrid control system had started How did it happen? Problem symptoms* *: Be sure to ask the customer in detail about the following points concerning the vehicle operating conditions, environment and problem, and then check for DTCs. If the entry lock/unlock function does not operate for all doors. If the entry lock function does not operate. If the entry unlock function does not operate. If both the entry lock and unlock functions do not operate. If the wireless lock and unlock functions do not operate. If there is no power even when the power switch is pressed [does not turn on (ACC)]. If the hybrid control system does not start with the entry ignition function. If the wireless answer-back buzzer and outside warning buzzers do not sound. If the customer attempted to start the hybrid control system by touching the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) to the power switch and pressing the power switch. If the interior warning buzzers do not sound. Any other details concerning the problem. If it is thought that wave interference is likely, be sure to ask the customer in detail about the following points concerning the vehicle operating conditions, environment and problem. Specific locations where the system does not operate (such as near TV towers, large video displays, wireless garage door opener systems, wireless security cameras, home security systems, etc.). Specific times when the system does not operate: Whether or not symptoms occurred immediately after purchase or only recently. Whether or not the symptoms occurred when the key was near the vehicle (electrical key antenna). If the system does not operate only when near specific vehicles (there may be an effect from electric waves from the wireless systems of other vehicles). If the system operates intermittently. If the key is bundled together with other items. If the key is carried together with other electronic devices, such as cell phones, personal computers, portable music players, other electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key), etc. (keep the key at least 0.1 m (0.33 ft.) away from such items). Where the key is being kept when not in use: Whether or not the key being placed within 1 m (3.28 ft.) of items such as TVs, DVD recorders, induction cookers, rice cookers, dishwashers, modems, cell phones, personal computers, microwave ovens, desk or floor lamps, cordless telephones, etc. If there are electronic devices that transmit electric waves placed in the vehicle. When the key battery was last replaced (when the battery is low): The key battery can be checked using the "Key Low Battery" item in the Data List. Refer to «DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#smart-key-system-for-entry-function-diagnostics-introduction) . If the customer installed any optional components (theft deterrent devices, wireless fog lights, etc.) to the vehicle. NEXT: Go to next step
  3. INSPECT BASIC OPERATION Inspect auxiliary battery voltage. Standard voltage 11 to 14 V (IG OFF) NOTE: If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the auxiliary battery before proceeding to the next step. Check for blown fuses, open or shorted wire harnesses, improperly connected connectors and other problems in areas that can be visually inspected. NEXT: Go to next step
  4. INSPECT COMMUNICATION FUNCTION OF CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM* Use the Techstream to check if the CAN communication system is functioning normally. Refer to «DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/communication-devices/#can-communication-system-diagnostics-introduction) .   1. OPERATION DESCRIPTION Smart ignition function: When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the detection area inside the vehicle and the brake pedal is depressed, the hybrid control system is started by pressing the power switch. When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the detection area inside the vehicle and the brake pedal is not depressed, the power source mode is changed by pressing the power switch. The power source mode changes in the following order every time the power switch is pressed: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) when the power switch is off, if the power switch is pressed while not depressing the brake pedal, the power source mode changes to ACC and the power switch indicator illuminates in amber. After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) when the power switch is off, if the brake pedal is depressed while park (P) is selected, the power switch indicator illuminates in green. The hybrid control system starts if the power switch is pressed when the power switch indicator is illuminated in green. Changing the power source mode when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) does not operate correctly due to wave interference or transmitter battery depletion: Unlock the door using the built-in mechanical key and get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key). When a buzzer sound is heard from the buzzer in the combination meter sub-assembly. By pressing the power switch while not depressing the brake pedal, the power source mode changes in the following order every time the power switch is pressed: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. Starting the hybrid control system when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) does not operate correctly due to wave interference or transmitter battery depletion: Unlock the door using the built-in mechanical key and get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key). While depressing the brake pedal with park (P) is selected, hold the ornament side of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) against the power switch. When a buzzer sound is heard from the buzzer in the combination meter sub-assembly and the power switch indicator illuminates in green, press the power switch within 10 seconds while keeping the brake pedal depressed to start the hybrid control system.
  2. CHECK SMART IGNITION FUNCTION Check the smart ignition function: Get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) with the power switch off. With park (P) is selected, check that the power switch indicator illuminates in green when the brake pedal is depressed. Then check that the hybrid control system starts when the power switch is pressed after the power switch indicator illuminates in green. While the brake pedal is released and the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is being carried, check that the power source mode changes in the following order when the power switch is pressed: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. HINT: When the power switch is pressed with the power switch on (IG) and park (P) not selected, the power source mode change to off. Check the smart ignition operation range for the front side. Place the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) in either of the two locations making sure that the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is oriented as shown in the illustration, and then check that the hybrid control system can be started. If the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is within 0.2 m (0.66 ft.) of the shift position, communication may not be possible. HINT: Perform this inspection for both inspection points. Check the smart ignition operation range for the rear side. Place the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) in either of the two locations making sure that the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is oriented as shown in the illustration, and then check that the hybrid control system can be started. The key is verified*. Park (P) is selected. The stop light switch is on. *: When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the vehicle, the ID code sent as a result from communication between the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) and certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) and the ID code calculated by the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) are compared. If the ID codes match each other, the vehicle recognizes that the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is in the vehicle. Indicator Condition Chart Indicator Vehicle State Off Either condition is met: The hybrid control system is starting. The power switch is off and the vehicle is in a state in which the hybrid control system does not start if the power switch is pressed. Illuminated in green All conditions below are met and the vehicle is in a state in which the hybrid control system can be started if the power switch is pressed: The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly (key) is inside the vehicle, the stop light switch is on and park (P) selected. Illuminated in amber The power switch is on (ACC) or on (IG), and the vehicle is in a state in which the hybrid control system does not start if the power switch is pressed. Blinking in amber (2 second intervals) The power management control ECU has an internal malfunction. The indicator starts blinking when the power management control ECU is determined to have an internal malfunction. The indicator stops blinking when the ECU returns to normal or 15 seconds elapse after blinking starts.

CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS

  1. CUSTOMIZE SMART KEY SYSTEM (for Start Function) HINT: The following items can be customized. NOTE: When the customer requests a change in a function, first make sure that the function can be customized. Record the current settings before customizing. Customizing with the Techstream Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Customize Setting / Smart key/Access or Warning. Select the setting by referring to the table below. Display Default Content Setting Relevant ECU Ignition Available Area (Entry ignition available area) All Function that sets the area that the key must be in before the power switch can be operated. Front or All Certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) Key Low Battery Warning (Warn when key battery becomes weak) ON Enables or disables the sounding of the buzzer when the transmitter battery is low and the power switch is turned off after being on (IG) for 20 minutes or more. The following functions are disabled when the smart key system is canceled. Entry unlock/lock functions Push start function Key lock-in prevention function Entry warning functions When canceling the system through manual operation: Make sure the following conditions are met: The power switch is off. The driver door is closed. The driver door is unlocked. Press the unlock button of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. Open the driver door within 5 seconds of completing the step above (driver door: closed at beginning of step --> opened). With the driver door open, press the unlock button of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly 2 times within 5 seconds of completing the step above. NOTE: If the driver door is closed before or while pressing the unlock button, the entry cancel setting mode will end. Close and open the driver door twice completing the above step (driver door: open at beginning of step --> closed --> opened --> closed --> opened). With the driver door open, press the unlock button of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly 2 times completing the step above. NOTE: If the driver door is closed before or while pressing the unlock button, the entry cancel setting mode will end. Close and open the driver door completing the step above (driver door: open at beginning of step --> closed --> opened). Close the driver side door within 5 seconds of completing the above step. Check that the wireless buzzer sounds twice (short beeps) to confirm that the smart key system has been canceled. HINT: Finish the step 5 to 7 within 30 seconds. Perform the following procedure to restore the smart key system to the active state from the canceled state. Perform the procedures to cancel the smart key system again. Check that the wireless buzzer sounds once (short beep) to confirm that the smart key system has been restored to the active state. HINT: The system changes between the canceled state and the active state each time the procedure to cancel the system through manual operation is performed. The buzzer sounds twice when the system changes from the active state to the canceled state, and sounds once when the system changes from the canceled state to the active state.

DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM

  1. DESCRIPTION Smart key system (for start function) data and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be read through the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the Techstream to check for malfunctions and perform repairs.
  2. CHECK DLC3 Check the DLC3. Refer to «GENERAL INFORMATION»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/hoistjack/#introduction) .
  3. INSPECT AUXILIARY BATTERY VOLTAGE Measure the auxiliary battery voltage with the power switch off. Standard voltage 11 to 14 V (IG OFF) If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the auxiliary battery.

DTC CHECK / CLEAR

Note. If the Techstream is connected to the vehicle with the power switch off, the information stored in smart key system related ECUs (the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly), power management control ECU and main body ECU) cannot be read. However, smart key system DTCs and Data List information can be confirmed even if the power switch is off using the method below: Connect the Techstream to the vehicle, and turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less until communication between the Techstream and vehicle begins (the Techstream screen changes when communication begins). Connect the Techstream to the vehicle, select the vehicle type under manual mode, and then enter the following menus: for Power Source Control: Body Electrical / Power Source Control / Trouble Codes. for Smart Key: Body Electrical / Smart Key / Trouble Codes.

  1. DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on.
