TROUBLE SHOOTING

To trouble shoot mechanical engine components, see ENGINE MECHANICAL article under BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Inspection

  1. Clean top surfaces of pistons and cylinder block. Turn crankshaft as needed to bring each piston to top dead center for cleaning. Remove all gasket material from cylinder block and cylinder head surfaces. Clean combustion chambers and cylinder heads. Clean valve guide bushings.
  2. Inspect cylinder head warpage at cylinder block and manifold areas. Replace cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See «WARPAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159178-S34630100612003111700000) table. Inspect air intake chamber-to-intake manifold surface and exhaust manifold for warpage. Inspect intake manifold-to-cylinder head and air intake chamber surfaces for warpage. Replace components if warpage exceeds specification.   3. Using caliper, measure 12-point cylinder head bolt diameter just below the bolt head. Replace cylinder head bolt if diameter is less than .3445 in. (8.750 mm). Inspect cylinder block deck surface for warpage. Replace cylinder block if deck surface warpage exceeds specification. See «WARPAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159178-S34630100612003111700000) table.
  4. Inspect camshaft and components. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-159178-S06751180662003111700000) . Inspect valve lifter for damage. Measure valve lifter diameter and bore diameter. Ensure oil clearance is within specification. Replace components if not within specification. See «VALVE LIFTERS»(ref-159178-S37711582602003111700000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

  1. Inspect components for damage. Check camshaft journal diameter, lobe height and journal runout. Replace camshaft if not within specifications. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-159178-S10449220792003111700000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Check camshaft bearings for flaking or scoring. NOTE: If all camshaft bearings are damaged, replace bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
  2. Install camshaft in cylinder head. Using Plastigage, check camshaft oil clearance. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification in sequence when checking oil clearance. see scheme 35 See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159178-S17585881052003111700000).
  3. Replace camshaft and/or cylinder head if oil clearance is not within specification. Check camshaft end play with camshaft bearing cap bolts installed in proper locations and tightened to specification. (Scheme 19) Replace camshaft and/or cylinder head if end play is not within specification.
  4. Mount hexagon wrench head portion of intake camshaft in a soft jawed vise. Ensure that VVT-i will not turn. Cover the port opposite of advance angle side port with vinyl tape. Apply air at approximately 14 psi (1 kg/cm 3 ) to port on advance side and ensure VVT-i turns. (Scheme 18) While applying air pressure to VVT-i advance angle port, turn VVT-i by hand in direction of arrow in (Scheme 18). Allow VVT-i to turn back and forth and ensure there is about 30 degrees of smooth movable range. Turn VVT-i with your hand and lock it at maximum delay angle position (opposite of direction of arrow in (Scheme 18) ).
  5. Install both camshafts without sub-gear installed on exhaust camshaft. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification. Check gear backlash between camshaft gears. Replace camshaft if gear backlash exceeds specification. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-159178-S10449220792003111700000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  6. Measure distance between ends of gear spring. Replace gear spring if distance is not.716-.740 in. (18.18-18.79 mm).

  1. Inspect components for damage. Coat relief valve with engine oil. Ensure relief valve slides freely in bore on oil pump body. Install drive and driven rotors in oil pump body. Ensure both rotors are installed in oil pump body with identification mark (triangle mark) facing oil pump body cover.
  2. Use a feeler gauge and straightedge to measure rotor side clearance. If side clearance exceeds maximum specification, replace rotors as a set. If necessary, replace oil pump assembly. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159178-S16320574302003111700000) table.
  3. Using feeler gauge, measure rotor tip clearance between tip of both rotors. Replace rotor assembly if clearance exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159178-S16320574302003111700000) table.
  4. Using feeler gauge, measure driven rotor-to-oil pump body clearance. Replace rotor assembly or oil pump body if clearance exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159178-S16320574302003111700000) table.
