Scheme 30: VALVE CLEARANCE

Camry

  1. Check and adjust valve clearance with engine cold. Remove valve covers. Rotate crankshaft pulley and align crankshaft pulley groove with "0" mark on timing belt cover so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke.
  2. Ensure cylinder No. 1 intake valve lifters are loose and exhaust valve lifters are tight. If valve lifters are not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees and realign timing marks.
  3. Use feeler gauge to measure valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft lobe. Measure and record valve clearance of intake valves on cylinders No. 1 and 6, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 31)
  4. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 240 degrees (2/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valves on cylinders No. 2 and 3, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 4 and 5.
  5. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 240 degrees (2/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valves on cylinders No. 4 and 5, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1 and 6.
  6. Valve clearance should be within specification. See the «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (V6)»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-v6) table. If valve clearance adjustment is required, rotate crankshaft pulley so camshaft lobe is facing upward on valve to be adjusted.
  7. Position adjusting shim notch toward spark plug. Use ValveClearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55020) and SST (A) to press valve lifter downward. (Scheme 30)
  8. Install SST (B) between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST (A). Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Using micrometer, measure thickness of removed adjusting shim.
  9. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used. Determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used by subtracting appropriate valve clearance specification (See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-v6) Table) from measured valve clearance. Add this number to thickness of old shim. Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value.
  10. Install proper adjusting shim. Using SST (A), press downward on valve lifter and remove SST (B). Recheck valve clearance. Install valve covers.

  7. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record clearance of intake valve on cylinder No. 5, and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 1.
  8. Ensure clearance is within specification. Refer to the «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (V6)»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-v6) table. If valve clearance adjustment is required, rotate crankshaft pulley so camshaft lobe is facing upward on the valve to be adjusted.
  9. Position adjusting shim notch area in the direction in which adjusting shim will be removed. Use Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55020) and SST (A) to press valve lifter downward. (Scheme 30)
  10. Install SST (B) between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST (A). Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Using micrometer, measure thickness of adjusting shim removed.
  12. Using SST (A), press downward on valve lifter and remove SST (B). Recheck valve clearance. Install valve cover.

IGNITION TIMING

CAUTIONSome tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting tachometer to system. To avoid possible damage to ignitor and/or coil, DO NOT allow tachometer terminal to become grounded.
  1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shut engine off. Connect timing light. Connect tachometer to proper terminals of engine check connector. (Scheme 33)& 5.
  2. Install jumper wire between proper terminals of engine check connector. (Scheme 35)& 7. Start engine and ensure idle speed is within specification. Ensure base timing is within specification with engine at specified RPM. See «V6 IGNITION TIMING (DEGREES BTDC @ RPM)»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-v6) table. NOTE: Timing marks are on front cover on all models except Land Cruiser. On Land Cruiser, timing mark on flywheel must be aligned with pointer positioned above starter motor.
  3. Adjust timing by rotating the distributor.
  4. Remove jumper wire from engine check connector and ensure advance timing is within specification. See «V6 IGNITION TIMING (DEGREES BTDC @ RPM)»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-v6) table. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt or cam position sensor bolt.
