ENGINE MECHANICAL

Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.

4-CYLINDER

Note. Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Camry, Celica, Corolla, MR2, Paseo & Previa
  1. On Previa models, remove screws and right front seat scuff plate. Remove bolt and disconnect right seat belt from floor panel.
  2. Remove retaining bolts and right front seat. Remove retaining bolts and right front seat leg. Remove retaining bolts, jack holder and right engine service hole cover.
  3. Install bolt in end of accessory drive shaft, near cooling fan and tighten nut. (Scheme 1) Bolt is used to rotate the engine. NOTE: If valve cover uses grommets below retaining nuts or bolts, keep grommets in order so they are installed in original location during reassembly.
  4. On all models, remove valve cover(s). Rotate crankshaft so timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on front cover and cylinder No. 1 (front cylinder) is at TDC on compression stroke.
  5. Ensure valves on cylinder No. 1 are closed. With cylinder No. 1 at TDC, check clearance on specified valves. See «VALVE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE (CAMRY, CELICA, COROLLA, MR2, PASEO &»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-4-cyl) PREVIA) table. (Scheme 2)
  6. Using feeler gauge, measure and record clearance between valve lifter and camshaft. Ensure clearance is within specification. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (4-CYLINDER)»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-4-cyl) table.
  7. To check remaining valves, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees (one full revolution) until cylinder No. 4 is at TDC of compression stroke. Measure valve clearance on specified valves. Refer to the «VALVE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE (CAMRY, CELICA, COROLLA, MR2, PASEO &»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-4-cyl) PREVIA) table.
  8. If valves require adjustment, rotate crankshaft so camshaft lobe on valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from valve lifter. Rotate valve lifter so notch on valve lifter is toward spark plug.
  9. Press valve lifter downward using Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55020) and SST (A). (Scheme 3) Install SST (B) between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST (A).
  10. Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Measure thickness of adjusting shim removed. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used. Determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used by subtracting appropriate valve clearance specification (See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-4-cyl) Table) from measured valve clearance. Add this number to thickness of old shim. Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value. See appropriate «SHIM THICKNESS»(/toyota/camry/v30-1990-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-4-cyl).
  11. Install adjusting shim and recheck valve clearance. Install valve cover and gasket. On Previa models, remove bolt from accessory drive shaft. On all models, to install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
