ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Note. For repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Note. When servicing engine, reference to right and left refers to engine sides as viewed from rear of engine (drive plate end).

Engine serial number is stamped on rear of cylinder block. (Scheme 48)

VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

Note. Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. On Sienna, remove outer cowl top panel assembly, including wiper arms and ventilator louver. On all models, remove right fender apron seal.
  2. Remove "V" bank cover (2 nuts and 2 clips). Remove spark plug wires. Remove air intake chamber assembly. Remove ignition coils. Disconnect upper radiator hose at coolant outlet housing. Remove cylinder head covers.
  3. Rotate crankshaft timing sprocket clockwise (viewed from front of engine) so pulley groove is aligned with "0" timing mark of lower timing belt cover. This sets cylinder No. 1 to TDC on compression stroke. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder on right side when viewed from rear of engine. (Scheme 49)
  4. Ensure intake and exhaust valve lifters on cylinder No. 1 are loose. If conditions are not as described, rotate crankshaft clockwise one complete revolution.
  5. Using feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on intake valves of cylinders No. 1 and 6 and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 49)
  6. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 2/3 turn (240 degrees). Measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on intake valves of cylinders No. 2 and 3 and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 4 and 5. (Scheme 49)
  7. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 2/3 turn (240 degrees). Measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on intake valves of cylinders No. 4 and 5 and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1 and 6. (Scheme 49)
  8. To determine if valve clearances are within specification, see «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table. VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS Application (1) In. (mm) Exhaust Valve.010-.014 (.25-.35) Intake Valve.006-.010 (.15-.25) (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
  9. If valve clearance requires adjustment, rotate camshaft so lobe on valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from valve lifter. Position notch on valve lifter perpendicular to the camshaft. Ensure notch is not aligned with the camshaft. Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55040) is used to remove adjusting shim. Using SST "A" of valve clearance adjuster, push downward on valve lifter. (Scheme 50)
  10. Place SST "B" between camshaft and valve lifter with the side marked with a "7" or "9" in the right location, depending on cylinder application. Side marked with "7" should be used on front valves on No. 1 and 2 cylinders only. Remove SST "A".
  11. Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Measure and record thickness of removed adjusting shim. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, select proper replacement adjusting shim. (Scheme 51)and (Scheme 52).
  12. Install replacement adjusting shim with imprinted number on adjusting shim facing the valve lifter. Recheck valve clearance. Before installing valve cover and gasket, apply sealant at front and rear areas of cylinder head. (Scheme 53)
  13. Using NEW gasket, install valve cover. Install and tighten valve cover bolts to specification in several steps. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW gaskets. Tighten all fasteners to specification. Fill cooling system.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

To trouble shoot mechanical engine components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removal.

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.

FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE

Disconnect fuel pump connector. Start engine and run until it stops, then turn ignition off. Place a container under high-pressure fuel line connection. Slowly loosen and disconnect connection. Plug open end of fuel line. Reconnect fuel pump connector. Once fuel pressure is released, fuel system components may be serviced.

Note. Remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.

Removal (Avalon, Camry & Camry Solara)

  1. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__fuel-pressure-release) . Remove battery and battery tray. Remove hood. On Avalon, remove engine under cover. On all models, remove fender apron seals. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Disconnect accelerator cable. Remove air cleaner cap and air cleaner case.
  2. Remove cruise control actuator and bracket. Remove radiator and coolant reservoir tank. Remove front exhaust pipe. Disconnect electrical connections at ignitor and noise filter near left strut tower.
  3. Disconnect generator and starter wiring, ground straps from left and right fender aprons and 2 wiring harness connectors from left fender apron (Avalon only). Disconnect ground cable and engine wire protector clamp from battery bracket. Remove engine wire clamp from bracket on right fender apron. On Camry Solara disconnect Data Link Connector 1 (DLC1) from right fender apron. Remove wire clamp from bracket on fuel filter and brake booster vacuum hose from air intake chamber. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose from water outlet, heater hoses and fuel inlet hose from fuel filter. Remove purge hose from pipe on emission control valve set and from charcoal canister. Remove 2 vacuum hoses from ACIS vacuum tank.
  4. From inside passenger compartment, remove lower instrument panel. Disconnect 3 ECM connectors. Disconnect 3 cowl wiring connectors from connectors on bracket. Disconnect grommet from cowl panel and pull engine wiring harness into engine compartment.
  5. Remove drive shafts. See appropriate article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove starter assembly. On M/T, disconnect clutch release cylinder and accumulator, without disconnecting its tube.
  6. Disconnect wiring from A/C compressor. Remove compressor drive belt. Remove 4 bolts, nut and adjusting bar bracket from compressor. Remove compressor. Disconnect control cables from transaxle.
  7. Remove 2 nuts and disconnect power steering pressure line from engine hanger. Loosen 2 bolts and remove power steering belt. Remove 2 mounting bolts and remove power steering pump.
  8. Remove bolts holding transaxle to mounting insulator. Remove 4 nuts holding front frame to mounting bracket (2 nuts are hidden under rubber plugs in frame). Remove engine mounting absorber. Remove 3 bolts and remove engine mounting insulator from front frame.
  9. Install approved engine sling to engine hangers only. Remove 3 bolts and remove right engine mounting stay. On M/T, remove 2 bolts and remove No. 2 engine mounting stay. On A/T, remove 3 bolts and remove engine moving control rod and No. 2 right engine mounting bracket. Lift engine and transaxle from vehicle, using care not to damage any components.
  10. Engine should be mounted on engine stand. Front and rear mounting insulators can be removed. Transaxle can be separated from engine, if needed.

Installation (Avalon, Camry & Camry Solara)

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications) . On A/T, when installing transaxle to engine, use threadlock sealant on ends of drive plate mounting bolts. When installing exhaust pipe, install NEW gaskets and mounting nuts. Refill fluids. Start engine and check for leaks. Road test vehicle.

Removal (Sienna)

  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__fuel-pressure-release) . Remove hood. Remove cowl top panel assembly. Remove heater air duct. Remove battery and battery tray. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove air cleaner cap and air cleaner case. Remove cruise control actuator and bracket.
  2. Remove radiator and coolant reservoir tank. Disconnect A/T oil cooler hose from pipe, remove bolt, and disconnect cooler pipe from frame. Disconnect igniter connector and noise filter connector from cowl panel. Disconnect VSV connector for vapor pressure sensor, and disconnect vapor pressure sensor connector and clamp. Disconnect generator and starter wiring. Remove 2 ground strap connectors from right fender apron and 1 ground strap connector from left fender apron.
  3. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from air intake chamber. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose from water outlet. Disconnect heater hoses. Remove fuel inlet hose from fuel filter. Remove EVAP hose from pipe on emission control valve set and both vacuum hoses from ACIS vacuum tank.
  4. From inside passenger compartment, remove ECM. Disconnect grommet from cowl panel and push wiring harness through to engine compartment.
  5. Disconnect A/C compressor connector. Remove drive belt. Remove 4 bolts, nut and drive belt adjusting bar bracket. Remove compressor from engine. Disconnect A/T shift control cable from transaxle.
  6. Disconnect HO2S connector. Remove 2 bolts and exhaust pipe stay. Remove 2 bolts and front exhaust pipe bracket. Remove 2 bolts and nuts and separate front exhaust pipe from tailpipe. Remove 4 nuts and separate front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Remove front exhaust pipe and 3 gaskets. Discard all mounting nuts, bolts and gaskets.
  7. Remove fender apron seals from their mounting points. Remove axle shafts. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Disconnect stabilizer bar links. Disconnect steering column intermediate shaft assembly. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
  8. Disconnect both power steering hoses from oil reservoir. Disconnect fender apron seals by turning over front side of both fender liners.
  9. Attach approved engine sling to engine hangers only. Remove 3 bolts and right engine mounting stay. Remove 3 bolts and engine moving control rod and No. 2 right engine mounting bracket. Remove 6 bolts, 4 nuts and 4 engine frame-to-body mounting braces. Carefully lower engine, transaxle, and front suspension frame member from vehicle.
  10. Disconnect power steering vane pump from engine. Remove 4 transaxle-to-left engine mount bolts, 4 engine absorber bolts, 3 front frame-to-engine insulator bolts, 4 rear engine-to-front frame insulator nuts (2 are hidden under rubber plugs), and remove front suspension frame member.
  11. Remove front and rear mounting insulators from engine. Disconnect throttle control cable. Remove starter. Disconnect wiring from transaxle. Remove torque converter cover. Turn crankshaft timing sprocket to access 6 bolts through drive plate cover. Remove transaxle from engine. Remove drive plate.

Installation (Sienna)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . When installing transaxle to engine, use threadlock sealant on ends of drive plate mounting bolts. When installing exhaust pipe, install NEW gaskets and mounting nuts. Refill fluids. Start engine and check for leaks. Road test vehicle.

CYLINDER HEAD & MANIFOLDS

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On Avalon, remove engine under cover. On Sienna, remove cowl panel assembly. On Camry Solara, remove suspension upper brace. On all models, remove right fender apron seal. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner cap assembly and air filter. Remove front exhaust pipe. Remove right engine mount stay.
  2. Remove nuts, clips, and "V" bank cover. Remove spark plug wires. Remove air intake chamber assembly after disconnecting accelerator and throttle cables, TP sensor connector, IAC valve connector, EGR gas temperature sensor connector, EGR valve position sensor connector, and other wiring and hoses, as equipped.
  3. Remove 6 injector connectors. Disconnect fuel inlet hose from fuel filter. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold. Remove 9 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 plate washers. Remove intake manifold, delivery pipes and injectors assembly.
  4. Disconnect wiring connectors and hoses from water outlet housing. Remove 2 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 plate washers and remove water outlet housing.
  5. Remove generator drive belt. Remove power steering pump. Remove ignition coils. Remove spark plugs. Remove timing belt. Remove camshaft timing pulleys and No. 2 idler pulley.
  6. Remove wiring clamps from rear timing belt cover. Remove 6 bolts and remove rear timing belt cover. Disconnect engine wiring and protectors from rear of engine, from both cylinder heads, and from water inlet. Disconnect engine wiring from right and left sides of engine.
  7. Disconnect cylinder head rear plate from left cylinder head. Remove water inlet pipe from left cylinder head and water inlet. Discard "O" ring from inlet pipe. Remove No. 1 EGR pipe and gaskets.
  8. Disconnect connectors from right exhaust manifold. Remove bolt, nut and manifold stay. Remove 6 nuts, right exhaust manifold. Discard gasket. Remove power steering pump bracket.
  9. Disconnect connectors from left exhaust manifold. Remove bolt, nut and manifold stay. Remove 6 nuts, left exhaust manifold. Discard gasket. Remove camshaft position sensor.
  10. Remove dipstick and guide. Remove and discard "O" ring from dipstick guide. Remove cylinder head covers and gaskets. Remove camshafts, if necessary. See «CAMSHAFTS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__camshaft).
  11. Using an 8-mm hexagon wrench, remove recessed cylinder head bolts. Loosen 8 12-point cylinder head bolts in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 55) Remove cylinder head.

Inspection

  1. Clean top surfaces of pistons and cylinder block. Turn crankshaft as needed to bring each piston to top dead center for cleaning. Remove all gasket material from cylinder block and cylinder head surfaces. Clean combustion chambers and cylinder heads. Clean valve guide bushings.
  2. Inspect cylinder head warpage at cylinder block and manifold areas. Replace cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See «WARPAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table. Inspect air intake chamber-to-intake manifold surface and exhaust manifold for warpage. Inspect intake manifold-to-cylinder head and air intake chamber surfaces for warpage. Replace components if warpage exceeds specification. See «WARPAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table.   3. Using caliper, measure 12-point cylinder head bolt diameter just below the bolt head. Replace cylinder head bolt if diameter is less than .3445" (8.750 mm). Inspect cylinder block deck surface for warpage. Replace cylinder block if deck surface warpage exceeds specification. See «WARPAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table.
  4. Inspect camshaft and components. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__camshaft) . Inspect valve lifter for damage. Measure valve lifter diameter and bore diameter. Ensure oil clearance is within specification. Replace components if not within specification. See «VALVE LIFTERS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Installation

  1. Install NEW cylinder head gaskets on cylinder block. Ensure identification mark is facing upward at lower corner of cylinder block. (Scheme 56) Ensure all holes in cylinder head gaskets align with cylinder block. Install cylinder heads.
  2. Apply engine oil on cylinder head bolt threads and cylinder head bolt-to-cylinder head contact surfaces. Install and tighten 12-point cylinder head bolts to specification in sequence using several passes. (Scheme 55) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). Replace any bolt that cannot be tightened to specification. To reach final torque, put paint on front-facing part of bolt head, then tighten an additional 90 degrees as indicated.
  3. Apply light coat of oil to threads of recessed head bolts. Install recessed cylinder head bolts and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). Install camshafts using proper procedure. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__camshaft).
  4. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. If camshaft or cylinder head components are serviced, adjust valve clearance. See «VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__valve-clearance-adjustment) under ADJUSTMENTS. Install NEW gaskets on rear timing belt cover. (Scheme 57)
  5. When installing intake manifold assembly, tighten bolts and nuts in sequence, using several passes to reach final specification. (Scheme 58)
  6. Use new gaskets and "O" rings as removed. Ensure all bolts and nuts are tightened to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). Adjust fluid levels and control cables.

TIMING BELT

WARNINGTo prevent air bag deployment, disconnect negative battery cable at least 90 seconds before working on vehicle.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On Sienna, remove cowl top panel assembly. On all models, raise and support vehicle. Remove passenger's side front wheel. Remove right fender apron seal. Remove accessory drive belts. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose from water outlet.
  2. Disconnect ground strap connectors. On Sienna, disconnect DLC1 from right engine mount bracket. Remove engine mounting stay, engine moving control rod and No. 2 right engine mounting bracket.
  3. On all models, remove generator bracket. Using holding tool and socket, remove crankshaft timing sprocket bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft timing sprocket. Remove lower timing belt cover. Remove timing belt guide. Remove upper timing belt cover. Remove right engine mounting bracket.
  4. Temporarily install crankshaft timing sprocket bolt in crankshaft. Using crankshaft timing sprocket bolt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing mark on crankshaft timing sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump body. (Scheme 59) Ensure timing marks on camshaft timing sprockets are aligned with timing mark on inner timing belt cover. (Scheme 59) If timing marks are not aligned, rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees). Remove crankshaft timing sprocket bolt from crankshaft.
  5. If reusing timing belt, ensure 3 reference marks and front mark are on timing belt. (Scheme 60) If reference marks or front mark are not apparent, place reference mark on timing belt at timing mark area on camshaft timing sprockets or dot area on crankshaft timing sprocket for reassembly reference. Place front mark on timing belt to indicate direction of timing belt installation.
  6. Remove timing belt. If removing camshaft timing sprockets, use appropriate holding tool and socket. Remove idler pulleys (if necessary). If removing crankshaft timing sprocket, remove timing belt plate. Using puller, carefully remove crankshaft timing sprocket to avoid scratching sensor part of pulley.

  1. Inspect timing belt for damaged teeth, cracking or oil contamination. Ensure idler pulleys rotate freely and show no signs of oil leakage. Replace damaged components.
  2. Inspect timing belt tensioner for signs of oil leakage. Timing belt tensioner may seep a small amount of oil on rod seal under normal conditions. If excessive amount of oil exists, replace timing belt tensioner. Hold timing belt tensioner body with rod facing upward and press rod against solid surface. Replace timing belt tensioner if rod moves.
  3. Measure timing belt tensioner rod protrusion from end of rod to edge of timing belt tensioner housing. (Scheme 61) Replace timing belt tensioner if distance is not.394-.425" (10.00-10.79 mm).

  1. If installing crankshaft timing sprocket, align crankshaft timing sprocket with key groove. Install crankshaft timing sprocket with sensor side inward. Use care to avoid scratching sensor portion of sprocket.
  2. Install timing belt plate. Install and tighten bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). Install No. 1 and 2 idler pulleys (if removed). Install and tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). Ensure idler pulleys are clean and rotate smoothly.
  3. If installing camshaft timing sprockets, ensure right camshaft timing sprocket is installed with flange side outward and left camshaft timing sprocket is installed with flange side inward. Align hole in camshaft timing sprocket with pin in camshaft and install sprocket. Install and tighten camshaft timing sprocket bolt to specification.
  4. Temporarily install crankshaft timing sprocket bolt in crankshaft. Using crankshaft timing sprocket bolt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing mark on crankshaft timing sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump body. (Scheme 59)
  5. Using camshaft timing sprocket holder, rotate each camshaft timing sprocket so timing mark on camshaft timing sprocket aligns with timing mark on inner timing belt cover. (Scheme 59)
  6. Align reference marks on timing belt with dot on crankshaft timing sprocket and timing marks on camshaft timing sprocket. (Scheme 60) Ensure front mark is pointing toward timing belt end of engine.
  7. Install timing belt on crankshaft timing sprocket, water pump pulley, left camshaft timing sprocket, No. 2 idler pulley, right camshaft timing sprocket, and then on No. 1 idler pulley. (Scheme 60) Using press, apply pressure on rod of timing belt tension until rod is retracted and holes in rod and housing are aligned. (Scheme 62) Install hexagon wrench through holes in housing and rod to hold rod in retracted position.
  8. Release press and install dust boot on timing belt tensioner. Install timing belt tensioner. Install and alternately tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). Remove hexagon wrench from timing belt tensioner.
  9. Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise until timing mark on crankshaft timing sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump body. (Scheme 59)
  10. Ensure timing mark on each camshaft timing sprocket is aligned with timing mark on inner timing belt cover. If all timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and reinstall. Remove crankshaft timing sprocket bolt.
  11. Install engine mounting bracket on front of cylinder block. Install and tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  12. Using NEW gaskets, install upper timing belt cover. Install and tighten bolts to specification. Install wiring harness protector clamp to inner timing belt cover. Install timing belt guide with cup side facing outward.
  13. Using NEW gaskets, install lower timing belt cover. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  14. Align crankshaft key with key groove of crankshaft pulley. Install pulley. Install and tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  15. Install generator bracket, No. 2 right engine mounting bracket, moving control rod and right engine mounting stay. Connect all connectors and hoses. Install accessory drive belts. Install right fender apron seal and front wheel. On Sienna, install cowl top panel. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).

Remove camshaft. See CAMSHAFT . Note location of adjusting shims and valve lifters for reassembly reference. Remove adjusting shims and valve lifters from cylinder head.

Inspect components for damage. Measure valve lifter diameter and bore diameter. Ensure oil clearance is within specification. Replace components if not within specification. See VALVE LIFTERS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure components are installed in original location. If camshaft, adjusting shim or valve lifter are replaced, check valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS.

  1. Remove cylinder head(s). See «CYLINDER HEAD»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__cylinder-head-manifolds). Camshafts can be removed prior to cylinder head being removed from vehicle, if necessary, after removal of cylinder head covers. CAUTION: Since thrust clearance of camshaft is small, camshaft must be kept level during removal and handling. If not, thrust end of camshaft may crack cylinder head and/or break camshaft. Follow removal procedures carefully to avoid this damage.
  2. When removing intake camshaft, align timing marks (2 dots) on camshaft gears by rotating camshaft using hex area of camshaft. (Scheme 63) Secure exhaust camshaft sub-gear to camshaft main gear with a 6 x 1.0 x 18 mm service bolt (this step will ensure torsional spring force of sub-gear is eliminated). (Scheme 64)
  3. Uniformly loosen and remove 10 bearing cap bolts, in several passes, following sequence given. (Scheme 65) Remove 5 bearing caps and remove intake camshaft. Repeat this procedure to remove exhaust camshaft, following proper bolt loosening sequence.
  4. If disassembling exhaust camshaft, mount hexagonal area of camshaft in soft-jaw vise. Using holding tool on sub-gear, turn sub-gear counterclockwise and remove service bolt "A". (Scheme 66) Remove snap ring, wave washer, sub-gear and gear spring.
  1. Inspect components for damage. Check camshaft journal diameter, lobe height and journal runout. Replace camshaft if not within specifications. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Check camshaft bearings for flaking or scoring. NOTE: If all camshaft bearings are damaged, replace bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
  2. Install camshaft in cylinder head. Using Plastigage, check camshaft oil clearance. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification in sequence when checking oil clearance. (Scheme 67) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  3. Replace camshaft and/or cylinder head if oil clearance is not within specification. Check camshaft end play with camshaft bearing cap bolts installed in proper locations and tightened to specification. (Scheme 68) Replace camshaft and/or cylinder head if end play is not within specification.
  4. Install both camshafts without sub-gear installed on exhaust camshaft. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification. Check gear backlash between camshaft gears. Replace camshaft if gear backlash exceeds specification. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  5. Measure distance between ends of gear spring. Replace gear spring if distance is not.716-.740" (18.18-18.79 mm).

  1. When assembling exhaust camshaft, install gear spring, sub-gear, wave washer and snap ring. Using spanner wrench, rotate sub-gear counterclockwise until holes in main gear and sub-gear are aligned. Ensure pins on the gears align with ends of gear spring. Install service bolt "A". (Scheme 64)
  2. Apply grease to thrust surfaces and journals of camshafts. Install exhaust camshaft in cylinder head. Rotate exhaust camshaft so timing marks on cylinder head are positioned at 90-degree angle to cylinder head. (Scheme 69)
  3. Apply grease to seal lip on NEW oil seal. Install oil seal on exhaust camshaft. Apply sealant on No. 1 exhaust camshaft bearing cap at bearing cap-to-cylinder head surface.
  4. Install exhaust camshaft bearing caps in numerical order. Ensure arrow on top of camshaft bearing cap is pointing toward timing belt end of engine. (Scheme 68)
  5. Coat camshaft bearing cap bolt-to-camshaft bearing cap surface and bolt threads with engine oil. Install and tighten exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification in sequence using several steps.   6. Install intake camshaft in cylinder head. Rotate intake camshaft so timing mark on intake camshaft is aligned with timing mark on exhaust camshaft. (Scheme 63)
  7. Install intake camshaft bearing caps in numerical order. Ensure arrow on top of camshaft bearing cap is pointing toward timing belt end of engine. (Scheme 68)
  8. Coat camshaft bearing cap bolt-to-camshaft bearing cap surface and bolt threads with engine oil. Install and tighten intake camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 67) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). CAUTION: Ensure service bolt "A" is removed from sub-gear on exhaust camshafts.
  9. Remove service bolt "A" from exhaust camshaft. Check and adjust valve clearance. See «VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__valve-clearance-adjustment) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  10. Apply sealant to grooves of semi-circular plugs and install in cylinder head (if removed). (Scheme 54) Before installing valve cover and gasket, apply sealant at front and rear areas of cylinder head. (Scheme 53)
  11. Using NEW gasket, install valve cover. Install and tighten valve cover bolts to specification in several steps. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications). To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. Fill cooling system and adjust control cables.

Remove transaxle and drive plate. Using a knife, cut off oil seal lip. Pry oil seal from crankshaft rear oil seal housing. Use care not to damage sealing surfaces.

  1. Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean. Apply grease to seal lip of oil seal. Install oil seal in crankshaft rear oil seal housing until oil seal is even with housing surface.
  2. Apply Loctite to drive plate bolts. Install and tighten bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications) . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 70

Scheme 70: Removal

Note. Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse effect, causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.

  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2. Remove air cleaner cap assembly and air filter.
  3. Disconnect ect switch connectors.
  4. Disconnect engine wire protector from water inlet and rh cylinder head. Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire protector from the water inlet and cylinder head.
  5. Disconnect water inlet pipe from water inlet and LH cylinder head. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the inlet pipe from the water inlet. Remove the O-ring from the inlet pipe.
  6. Remove water inlet and thermostat. Remove the 3 nuts, water inlet and thermostat. Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
  1. Place thermostat in water pump. Install a new gasket on to the thermostat. Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud bolt, and insert the thermostat in the water inlet housing. NOTE: The jiggle valve may be set within 15° of either side of the prescribed position.
  2. Install water inlet. Install the water inlet with the 3 nuts. Torque: 8 Nm (80 kgfcm, 69 in.lbf).
  3. Install water inlet pipe. Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring. Connect the water inlet pipe to the water inlet. Install the bolt holding the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head. Torque: 19.5 Nm (200 kgfcm, 14 ftlbf).
  4. Install engine wire protector.
  5. Connect ECT switch connectors.
  6. Reinstall air filter and air cleaner cap assembly.
  7. Fill with engine coolant.
  8. Start engine and check for leaks.
  9. Recheck engine coolant level.

WATER PUMP

WARNINGTo prevent air bag deployment, disconnect negative battery cable at least 90 seconds before working on vehicle.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove timing belt, camshaft sprockets and No. 2 idler pulley. See «TIMING BELT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__timing-belt) .
  2. Remove inner timing belt cover. Remove bolts/nuts, water pump and gasket.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW gaskets. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure proper procedure is followed when installing timing belt. Fill cooling system.

OIL PAN

WARNINGTo prevent air bag deployment, disconnect negative battery cable at least 90 seconds before working on vehicle.

Removal (Avalon & Sienna)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove front exhaust pipe that fits between exhaust manifolds and catalytic converter.
  2. Remove dipstick. Remove lower oil pan bolts and nuts. Install a cutter blade between upper and lower oil pans. Carefully tap seal cutter around lower oil pan to cut and loosen seal. DO NOT damage sealing surfaces. Remove lower oil pan. DO NOT damage sealing surfaces.
  3. Remove oil strainer and gasket. Remove exhaust pipe support stay and drive plate cover. Remove upper oil pan-to-transaxle bolts. Remove upper oil pan. Remove baffle plate, if necessary.

Installation (Avalon & Sienna)

  1. Ensure all pan and block sealing surfaces are clean. Apply a.16-.20" (4.0-5.0 mm) diameter bead of sealant on upper oil pan. (Scheme 75) Install upper oil pan. Install bolts and nuts and tighten, uniformly and in several passes, to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  2. Install drive plate cover and exhaust pipe support stay. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  3. Using NEW gasket, install pick-up tube. Install and tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  4. Apply a.16-.20" (4.0-5.0 mm) diameter bead of sealant on lower oil pan. (Scheme 75) Install lower oil pan. Install bolts and nuts and tighten, uniformly and in several passes, to specification. Valve Train

  1. With caliper gauge, measure inside diameter of valve stem guide bushings. Use a micrometer to measure diameter of corresponding valve stem. Difference between these 2 measurements is oil clearance. If clearance exceeds specifications, replace valve and guide bushing. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. After grinding valves enough to remove pits and carbon, check that valve is ground to correct valve face angle. Check valve head margin thickness. If face angle cannot be properly ground or in margin thickness is less than minimum, replace valve. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. Check overall valve length. If length is less than minimum, replace valve. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Check surface of valve stem tip for wear. Resurface tip with grinder or replace valve.
  4. With a 45-degree carbide cutter, resurface valve seats, removing only enough metal to clean seats. Apply light coat of Prussian Blue to valve face and lightly press valve against seat (DO NOT rotate valve). If Blue appears evenly around entire valve face, valve is okay. If not resurface or replace valve.
  5. Ensure seat contact width in middle of valve face is within specification. If not, recut valve face and hand-lap valve and seat. Replace valves and seats as necessary. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  6. Place valve spring next to steel square and measure deviation of spring. If spring deviation exceeds specifications, replace valve spring. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  7. With calipers, measure free length of valve spring. If free length is not within specification, replace spring. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  8. With spring tester, apply specified tension to press spring to indicated length. If installed tension is not as specified, replace spring. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  9. Measure valve guide bushing diameter. Replace guide, after heating cylinder head to 176-212°F (80-100°C), if not within specifications. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Camshafts

  1. Place camshaft on "V" blocks and use a dial indicator to measure circle runout at center journal. If runout exceeds specifications, replace camshaft. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Use a micrometer to measure cam lobe height. If height is less than specified, replace camshaft. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. With micrometer, measure camshaft journal diameter. If diameter is not within specification, check camshaft oil clearance. Go to step 5 .
  4. Check camshaft bearings for flaking or scoring. Replace bearing and cylinder head as a set if bearings are damaged.
  5. To check camshaft oil clearance using Plastigage, install camshaft in cylinder head using proper procedure. See «CAMSHAFT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__camshaft) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Replace camshaft and/or cylinder head if oil clearance is not within specification.
  6. Check camshaft end play with camshafts installed. Attach a dial indicator to end of camshaft and measure end play while moving camshaft back and forth. If clearance is greater than specifications, remove camshaft, or replace bearing caps and cylinder head as an assembly.
  7. Install camshafts without installing exhaust sub-gear. With a dial indicator, measure camshaft gear backlash. If backlash exceeds specifications, replace camshafts.
  8. With camshaft removed, use calipers to measure free distance of camshaft gear spring. Measure between open ends of spring. If free distance is not within specifications, replace camshaft gear spring.

Cylinder Head

  1. Use calipers to measure valve lifter bore diameter in cylinder head. Use a micrometer to measure lifter diameter. Difference in these 2 measurements represents valve lifter oil clearance. If oil clearance in not within specification, replace lifter or cylinder head. See «VALVE LIFTERS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. If installing spark plug tubes in NEW cylinder head, apply sealant on cylinder head end of spark plug tube. Using press, install spark plug tube until distance between top surface of spark plug tube and camshaft bearing cap surface of cylinder head is 1.669-1.709" (42.39-43.40 mm).
  3. If installing PCV pipe in NEW cylinder head, use hammer and wooden block to install PCV pipe. The PCV pipes are installed between exhaust camshaft and outer edge of cylinder head. (Scheme 54) Install PCV pipe until top of PCV pipe is even with valve cover gasket surface on cylinder head.

Connecting Rod Bearings

  1. Before removing piston and connecting rod, use a dial indicator to measure thrust clearance while moving connecting rod back and forth on crankshaft. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If thrust clearance exceeds maximum, replace connecting rod assembly(s). If necessary, replace crankshaft.
  2. Check match marks on connecting rod and cap to ensure correct reassembly of sets. Remove both cap bolts. In their loosened position, use bolts to wiggle connecting rod cap and lower bearings (keep bearing inserted in cap).
  3. Clean crank pin and bearing and check for any pitting or scratches. If crank pin or bearing is damaged, replace bearings. Replace crankshaft, if necessary.
  4. Lay strip of Plastigage across crank pin and install connecting rod cap with 2 bolts. Tighten to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications) . Remove cap bolts, cap and lower bearing. Check Plastigage at widest point to determine if oil clearance is within specifications. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If clearance exceeds maximum, replace bearings. If necessary, grind or replace crankshaft. NOTE: If bearing is replaced, use a replacement having the same number as marked on connecting rod. Replacement bearings are available in 4 sizes.   1. Remove connecting rod bearing caps. Use a ridge reamer to remove all carbon from top of cylinder. Push piston, connecting rod and upper rod bearing through top of cylinder block (keep components together and in correct order).
  2. Try to move piston back and forth on piston pin. If any movement is felt, replace piston and pin as an assembly.
  3. Use piston ring expander and remove 2 compression rings. Remove 2 side rails and oil ring by hand.
  4. Remove piston pin snap rings. Heat piston in liquid bath to about 140°F (60°C). With soft-face hammer and brass bar, tap out piston pin. Remove connecting rod (keep pin, rod and piston together as a set).
  5. With micrometer, measure piston diameter at right angle to piston centerline. Measure cylinder bore in thrust directions. Difference between these 2 measures is piston oil clearance. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If clearance exceeds specifications, replace all 6 pistons. If necessary, replace cylinder block.
  6. Shape of piston varies for right and left cylinder banks. Note pistons markings for proper location. (Scheme 77)or (Scheme 78).
  7. With piston heated to 140°F (60°C) piston pin should push into piston hole with hand pressure.
  8. With rod aligner tool and feeler gauge, check bend of connecting rod. If connecting rod exceeds bend specification, replace connecting rod assembly. See «CONNECTING RODS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  9. Check rod for twist. If twist exceeds maximum allowable specification, replace connecting rod assembly. See «CONNECTING RODS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  10. With caliper, measure inside diameter of connecting rod piston pin hole bushing. With micrometer, measure piston pin diameter. Difference between these 2 measurements is piston pin oil clearance. If clearance exceeds specification, replace bushing or piston pin, as necessary. See «CONNECTING RODS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. When replacing bushing, be sure to align oil holes in bushing and in connecting rod.
  11. Use caliper to measure outside diameter of connecting rod bolt, just above the threads. Replace connecting rod bolt if outside diameter is less than.276" (7.01 mm).

Scheme 75: Piston Rings
  1. Position edge of piston ring into appropriate ring groove. With feeler gauge, measure clearance between ring and piston groove. If ring groove clearance exceeds specifications, replace piston. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Insert piston ring into cylinder bore. Use piston to evenly push ring to position slightly below bottom of ring travel in bore, about 4.13" (105 mm) from top of cylinder block. Remove piston and use feeler gauge to measure ring end gap. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If gap exceeds specification, replace piston ring. If gap exceeds specification with NEW piston ring, replace cylinder block.
  3. Position piston rings with ring end gaps in proper areas and with identification mark on piston ring toward top of piston. (Scheme 79) No. 1 compression ring may contain a "1R", "T" or "G1" identification mark. No. 2 compression ring may contain a "2R", "2T" or "G2" identification mark. Ensure proper ring is installed in correct location.

  1. To reassemble, install piston on connecting rod with front mark on top of piston aligned with front mark on connecting rod. (Scheme 80)or (Scheme 81). Install NEW snap ring in piston. Ensure ends of snap ring are not aligned with piston pin cutout area of piston.
  2. Heat piston to 140°F (60°C) in water. Coat piston pin with engine oil. Install piston pin and remaining NEW snap ring. Ensure ends of snap ring are not aligned with piston pin cutout area of piston.
  3. Ensure connecting rod and connecting rod cap are marked with matching cylinder number for reassembly reference. Piston and connecting rod must be installed in cylinder block with front mark facing timing belt end of engine. (Scheme 79)
  4. Connecting rod and rod bearing are stamped with size mark ("1", "2", "3" or "4"). (Scheme 82) Size marks on connecting rod and rod bearing must be the same.
  5. Rod bearing thickness is determined by size mark. See «ROD BEARING SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table. If replacing rod bearing, ensure size mark on replacement rod bearing is same as size mark on original rod bearing. Size mark must also be same as that stamped on connecting rod.
  6. Ensure piston and connecting rod are installed in cylinder block with front mark facing timing belt end of engine. Ensure protrusion on connecting rod cap is facing timing belt end of engine.
  7. Coat connecting rod bolt threads and bolt head contact surface. Alternately tighten bolts, in several steps, to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  8. Ensure bearing oil clearance and connecting rod side play are within specification.   1. Remove 8 main bearing cap side bolts (hexagon bolts) and seal washers from side of cylinder block in alternating sequence in several steps.
  2. Remove 16 main bearing caps bolts in several steps, in sequence shown. (Scheme 83) Remove main bearing caps. Remove crankshaft. Keep upper main bearings together with cylinder block.
  3. Clean each main journal and bearing. Check all areas for pitting or scratching. If journal or bearing is damaged, replace bearings. If necessary, replace crankshaft.
  4. Place crankshaft into position. Lay strip of Plastigage across each journal. Install 4 main bearing caps. Install and tighten bolts 16 main cap bolts and 8 side bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  5. Remove main bearing caps without turning crankshaft. Measure Plastigage at widest point. This represents crankshaft journal oil clearance. If clearance exceeds maximum specification, replace bearings. If necessary, replace crankshaft. NOTE: If identification number of bearing cannot be determined, find and add together numbers imprinted on cylinder block and crankshaft, then refer to appropriate table for replacement bearing selection. Journal bearings No. 1 and No. 4 have 5 standard bearing sizes marked "3", "4", "5", "6" and "7". Journal bearings No. 2 and No. 3 have 5 standard bearing sizes marked "1", "2", "3", "4" and "5".   6. Measure main journals for proper diameter, taper and out-of-round. If diameter is out of specification, check journal oil clearance. If taper and out-of-round exceed specifications, replace crankshaft.   7. Main bearing size mark is located on side of main bearing. see scheme 39 If replacing main bearing, ensure size mark on replacement main bearing is the same as size mark on original main bearing. If size mark on original main bearing cannot be obtained, use size marks on cylinder block and crankshaft to determine size mark of main bearing to be used.   8. Coat threads of all main bearing bolts and bolt head-to-main bearing cap area with engine oil. Temporarily install 8 main bearing cap bolts to inside positions. Insert main bearing cap by hand until clearance between main bearing cap and cylinder block is less than.23" (5.8 mm), using internal cap bolts as a guide.
  9. Use soft-face hammer and lightly tap bearing cap to ensure proper fit. Install and tighten 12-point head main bearing cap bolts in progressive steps. Follow tightening sequence shown. see scheme 40 Tighten to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).
  10. NEW seal washers must be installed on main bearing cap side bolts (hexagon bolts) during final assembly. Install and tighten main bearing cap side bolts (hexagon bolts) to specification in sequence using several steps. see scheme 40 See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications).

Thrust Bearings

Install thrust bearing on No. 2 main bearing with grooves facing toward crankshaft. Replace thrust bearing if crankshaft end play is not within specification. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Cylinder Block

  1. Inspect cylinder block deck surface warpage. Replace cylinder block if deck warpage exceeds specification. See «CYLINDER BLOCK»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Measure cylinder bore diameter at.39" (9.9 mm) from top and bottom of cylinder bore and at middle of cylinder bore. Replace cylinder block if cylinder bore diameter is not within specification. See «CYLINDER BLOCK»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. If wear is less than.008" (.02 mm), use a ridge reamer to grind top of cylinder bore.
  4. Ensure main bearing bore inside diameter is within specification with main bearing caps installed and bolts tightened to specification. See «CYLINDER BLOCK»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Oil pump provides pressurized engine lubrication. see scheme 40

Crankcase Capacity

Crankcase capacity with oil filter is 5.0 qts. (4.7L).

Oil Pressure

With engine at normal operating temperature, oil pressure should be at least 4.3 psi (0.3 kg/cm 2 ) at idle and 43-78 psi (3.0-5.5 kg/cm 2 ) at 3000 RPM.

Removal & Disassembly

  1. On Sienna, remove cowl top panel. On all models, remove right front wheel and fender apron seal. Drain oil. Remove front exhaust pipe and pipe bracket from upper oil pan.
  2. On Camry Solara, remove upper suspension brace. On all models, remove accessory drive belts and power steering pump bracket. Remove A/C compressor from engine mounting and position aside.
  3. Remove timing belt. Remove camshaft timing sprockets and crankshaft timing sprocket. See «TIMING BELT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__timing-belt) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Remove inner timing belt cover from front of cylinder heads. Remove A/C compressor bracket.
  5. Remove lower oil pan and strainer. Remove upper oil pan. See «OIL PAN»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__oil-pan) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Remove baffle plate from upper oil pan. Remove crankshaft position sensor. Remove 9 bolts and remove oil pump, using a screwdriver to pry between oil pump and main bearing cap. Remove and discard "O" ring.
  7. Remove relief valve plug, gasket, spring and relief valve from side of oil pump housing. Remove 9 screws and remove pump body cover, and drive and driven rotors.
  1. Inspect components for damage. Coat relief valve with engine oil. Ensure relief valve slides freely in bore on oil pump body. Install drive and driven rotors in oil pump body. Ensure both rotors are installed in oil pump body with identification mark (triangle mark) facing oil pump body cover.
  2. Use a feeler gauge and straightedge to measure rotor side clearance. If side clearance exceeds maximum specification, replace rotors as a set. If necessary, replace oil pump assembly. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table.
  3. Using feeler gauge, measure rotor tip clearance between tip of both rotors. Replace rotor assembly if clearance exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table.
  4. Using feeler gauge, measure driven rotor-to-oil pump body clearance. Replace rotor assembly or oil pump body if clearance exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6) table.

OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS

Reassembly & Installation

  1. To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Ensure both rotors are installed in oil pump body with identification mark (triangle mark) facing oil pump body cover. Install oil pump body cover.
  2. Using NEW gasket, install and tighten relief valve plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications) . Using seal installer tool, install crankshaft front seal (if removed) until seal surface is even with oil pump body. Coat seal lip with grease.
  3. To install, apply sealant on mating surface of oil pump. DO NOT apply excess sealant or allow sealant into bolt holes.
  4. Install NEW "O" ring on cylinder block. Install oil pump. Ensure splined teeth on drive rotor of oil pump engage with splines on crankshaft. Install and tighten bolts, in several passes, to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__torque-specifications) .
  5. Install crankshaft position sensor, upper oil pan with baffle plate, oil strainer, and lower oil pan. See «OIL PAN»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-v6__oil-pan) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install remaining components in reverse of removal procedure. Start engine and check pump for leaks.
