Steering Column (Service Information): Removal & Installation Toyota 4Runner V

REMOVAL

WARNINGSome of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column, refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  2. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL LH
  3. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Remove the steering wheel, refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-422204-S07322717292011092600000) .
  4. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER Remove the 2 screws. Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column lower cover.
  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER COVER Detach the 4 clips. Detach the claw to remove the steering column upper cover.
  6. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connectors from the combination switch with spiral cable. Use pliers to hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
  7. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/ Transponder Key) Remove the transponder key amplifier, refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-422215-S13468819122011092600000) .
  8. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT LOWER PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY Remove the instrument lower panel airbag assembly, refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-422174-S16722605202011092600000) .
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Detach the claws to remove the wire harness protector and wire harness. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering column. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Matchmark Remove the bolt. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column.
  10. REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT FENDER APRON TO FRAME SEAL LH . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 7»(ref-422104-S08596522802011092600000)
  11. DISCONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Matchmark Remove the bolt, and then pull out the intermediate shaft toward the inside of the vehicle.
  12. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the 4 bolts and steering column hole cover from the vehicle.
  13. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and power steering gear. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Matchmark Remove the bolt and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.

  1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Using a center punch, mark the center of the tapered-head bolt. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.118 to 0.157 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts. Using a screw extractor, remove the bolt and steering lock actuator assembly from steering column assembly. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *A w/o Smart Key System *B w/ Smart Key System
  2. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Turn the ignition switch to ON (ACC). Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the hole in the steering column upper bracket, as shown in the illustration, and pull the ignition switch lock cylinder out until its claw comes into contact with the stopper of the steering column upper bracket. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Claw *2 Stopper *a Push *b Pull NOTE: Pull the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly out until its claw comes into contact with the stopper of the steering column bracket assembly upper. Otherwise, the following procedure cannot be conducted properly. Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the hole in the steering column bracket and tilt it downward, as shown in the illustration, to disengage the claw of the ignition switch lock cylinder.   3. REMOVE UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Push up the unlock warning switch center portion to disengage the 2 claws. HINT: Slide the unlock warning switch in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration to remove it.
  4. REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID (w/o Smart Key System) Disconnect the connector. Remove the 2 screws and remove the key interlock solenoid from the steering column upper bracket.
  5. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the 2 screws and remove the ignition switch from the steering column upper bracket.
  6. REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID WIRE (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the key interlock solenoid wire from the ignition switch.

  1. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID WIRE (w/o Smart Key System) Install the key interlock solenoid wire on to the install the ignition switch.
  2. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Install the ignition switch onto the steering column upper bracket with the 2 screws.
  3. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID (w/o Smart Key System) Install the key interlock solenoid onto the steering column upper bracket with the 2 screws. Connect the connector.
  4. INSTALL UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Attach the 2 claws to install the unlock warning switch onto the steering column upper bracket. HINT: Slide the unlock warning switch in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration to install it.
  5. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Turn the ignition switch to ON (ACC). Install the ignition switch lock cylinder into the steering column upper bracket. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder is securely fixed onto the ignition switch lock cylinder.
  6. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the key and check that the steering lock function is activated. Insert the key, turn the ignition switch ON (ACC) and check that the steering lock function is deactivated.
  7. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with a new tapered-head bolt. Tighten the tapered-head bolt until the bolt head breaks off. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *A w/o Smart Key System *B w/ Smart Key System

INSTALLATION

  1. CONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and power steering gear. Install the bolt. Torque: 36 N*m (367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf)
  2. INSTALL NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY Install the 4 bolts. Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) NOTE: Do not fold back the boot part of the steering hole cover or extend it excessively. If it is extended excessively, return it to its original position.
  3. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft assembly. HINT: Install the steering intermediate shaft from the inside of the vehicle. Install the bolt. Torque: 36 N*m (367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf)
  4. INSTALL NO. 1 FRONT FENDER APRON TO FRAME SEAL LH . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 17»(ref-422104-S09573140272011092600000)
  5. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering column. Install the steering column with the 4 nuts. Torque: 15 N*m (153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf) Install the bolt. Torque: 36 N*m (367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) Attach the claws to connect the wire harness.
  6. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT LOWER PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY Install the instrument lower panel airbag assembly, refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-422174-S28804021742011092600000) .
  7. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/ Transponder Key) Install the transponder key amplifier, refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-422215-S04557301612011092600000) .
  8. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Using pliers, grip the claws of the clamp and install the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp. Connect the connectors to the combination switch with spiral cable.
  9. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER COVER Attach the claw to install the steering column upper cover. Attach the 4 clips to install the steering column upper cover to the instrument cluster finish panel.
  10. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER Attach the 2 claws to install the steering column lower cover. Install the 2 screws.
  11. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Install the steering wheel assembly, refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-422204-S31446889732011092600000) .
  12. CHECK FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  14. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected, refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-421949-S36027747902011092600000) .
  15. CHECK SRS WARNING LIGHT Check the SRS warning light, refer to «DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM»(ref-422176-S39382170382011092600000) .

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL WARNING: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected, refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-421949-S36027747902011092600000) .
  3. REMOVE NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL LOWER COVER . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 2»(ref-422174-S15059681992011092600000)
  4. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL LOWER COVER . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 3»(ref-422174-S15059681992011092600000)
  5. REMOVE STEERING PAD . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 4»(ref-422174-S15059681992011092600000)
  6. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING WHEEL ORNAMENT Remove the 2 bolts. Detach the claw and remove the ornament.
  7. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL ORNAMENT Remove the 2 bolts. Detach the claw and remove the ornament. HINT: Refer to "Remove No. 1 Steering Wheel Ornament".
  8. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/ Steering Pad Switch) Disconnect the connector. Remove the 4 bolts. Detach the claw and remove the steering pad switch assembly. HINT: Refer to "Remove No. 1 Steering Wheel Ornament".
  9. REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH (w/ Cruise Control System) . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 5»(ref-422175-S02504719182011092600000)
  10. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Remove the steering wheel set nut. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Matchmark *b Hold *c Turn Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly. SST: 09950-50013 09951-05010 09952-05010 09953-05020 09954-05011

  1. INSPECT STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY Inspect the steering pad switch. Disconnect the switch connector. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Seek+ Switch *2 Seek- Switch *3 Volume+ Switch *4 Volume- Switch *5 MODE Switch *6 Off Hook Switch *7 Voice Switch *8 On Hook Switch Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 10 (AU1) - 8 (EAU) No switch pushed 95 to 105 kohms Seek+ switch pushed Below 2.5 ohms Seek- switch pushed 313 to 345 ohms Volume+ switch pushed 950 to 1050 ohms Volume- switch pushed 2950 to 3265 ohms 9 (AU2) - 8 (EAU) No switch pushed 95 to 105 kohms MODE switch pushed Below 2.5 ohms On Hook switch pushed 313 to 345 ohms Off Hook switch pushed 950 to 1050 ohms Voice switch pushed 2950 to 3265 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the steering pad switch assembly. Check the illumination. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal IL+2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal EAU of the steering pad switch assembly connector. Check that the switch illumination comes on. OK Steering pad switch illumination comes on. If the result is not as specified, replace the steering pad switch assembly.
  1. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut. Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
  2. INSTALL CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH (w/ Cruise Control System) . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 1»(ref-422175-S12629685552011092600000)
  3. INSTALL NO. 1 STEERING WHEEL ORNAMENT Attach the claw to install the ornament. Install the 2 screws
  4. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL ORNAMENT Attach the claw to install the ornament. Install the 2 screws
  5. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/ Steering Pad Switch) Attach the claw to install the steering pad switch assembly. Install the 4 screws Connect the connector.
  6. INSTALL STEERING PAD . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 1»(ref-422174-S26882882162011092600000)
  7. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL LOWER COVER . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 3»(ref-422174-S26882882162011092600000)
