DESCRIPTION

Non-Tilt steering columns are of a collapsible 2-piece design. Columns use shear pins to absorb collision impact. Steering shaft is connected directly to steering gear with flexible couplings on Cressida models.

Tercel and Pickup models use intermediate steering shafts. On 2WD Pickup models, intermediate shaft is connected to steering gear by a flexible coupling. On Land Cruiser, Tercel and 4-Runner models, intermediate shaft is connected to steering gear and to main steering shaft by universal joints.

Scheme 7: Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove steering wheel pad. Mark steering shaft and wheel for installation. Remove steering wheel. Remove dash panels and pads (if necessary). On models with A/C, remove air duct under steering column.
  2. Remove column bracket covers. Remove turn signal or combination switch. From under hood, disconnect steering shaft universal joint from steering gear (passenger vehicles), or from lower steering shaft (Land Cruiser, Pickup, Van and 4Runner models).
  3. Disconnect column shifter linkage (if equipped). Be sure to mark universal joint and shaft for installation. Remove bolts from column hole cover. Remove column support bracket bolts. Remove steering column from vehicle.

Installation

  1. Install steering column in vehicle and tighten column bracket bolts finger tight. Install column hole cover bolts. Tighten column bracket bolts. Attach column shift linkage (if equipped).
  2. Ensure alignment marks are aligned on universal joints, then tighten clamp bolts. Install turn signal or combination switch. Install bracket covers, dash panels and pads. Install air ducts (if equipped).
  3. Install steering wheel and steering wheel pad. Ensure alignment marks on steering shaft and steering wheel are aligned.

Disassembly

Remove ignition key cylinder. Remove column shift assembly from steering column. Remove clamp bolt and lower steering shaft. Remove hole cover from column. Remove snap ring from upper steering shaft.

Inspection

Check upper bracket for damage and upper bearing for rotating smoothness. Check steering shafts for bending, damaged splines or damaged universal joints. Check column tube for bending or other damage. Repair or replace components as necessary.

Reassembly

Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly procedures. Ensure all bushings, bearings, shims and bolts are not damaged or worn. If damaged or worn, replace with new units.
