Power Mode Master

This vehicles BCM functions as the power mode master (PMM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determination the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information, and so the PMM will activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. Refer to POWER MODE DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION for a complete description of power mode functions.

Serial Data Gateway

The BCM in this vehicle functions as a gateway or translator. The purpose of the gateway is to translate serial data messages between the GMLAN high speed buss and the GMLAN low speed buss for communication between the various modules. The gateway will interact with each network according to that network's transmission protocol. One example of this necessary communication is the communication between the Engine/Powertrain Control Module (ECM/PCM) which is high speed serial data and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Control Module which is low speed serial data. If these modules can not exchange information, the vehicle will not start.

Communication between the BCM and a scan tool can be on the high speed GMLAN network or low speed GMLAN network. If one network is lost, the BCM can still communicate with the scan tool. A lost communication DTC typically is set in modules other than the module with a communication failure.

Body Control Module

The various body control module (BCM) input and output circuits are described in the corresponding functional areas indicated on the BCM electrical schematics. Some BCM functions with the subsystems may be as a gateway only or as an enable for the system. The BCM related systems/subsystems include, but are not limited to the following

The data link connector (DLC) is a standardized 16-cavity connector. Connector design and location is dictated by an industry wide standard, and is required to provide the following

  1. Pin 1 GMLAN low speed communications terminal
  2. Pin 4 Scan tool power ground terminal
  3. Pin 5 Common signal ground terminal
  4. Pin 6 High speed GMLAN serial data bus (+) terminal
  5. Pin 7
  6. Pin 14 High speed GMLAN serial data bus (-) terminal
  7. Pin 16 Scan tool power, battery positive voltage terminal

Serial Data Reference

The scan tool communicates over the various busses on the vehicle. When a scan tool is installed on a vehicle, the scan tool will try to communicate with every module that could be optioned into the vehicle. If an option is not installed on the vehicle, the scan tool will display No Comm for that options control module. In order to avert misdiagnoses of No Communication with a specific module, refer to DATA LINK REFERENCES for a list of modules, the busses they communicate with, and the RPO codes for a specific module.

Serial Data Power Mode Master

Power to many of this vehicles circuits is controlled by the module that is designated the power mode master (PMM). This vehicles PMM is the body control module (BCM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determination of the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information. The PMM will also activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. The PMM determines which power mode (Off, Accessory, Run, Crank Request) is required, and reports this information to other modules via serial data. Modules which have switched voltage inputs may operate in a default mode if the PMM serial data message does not match what the individual module can see from its own connections.

The PMM receives ignition switch signals to identify the operators desired power mode. The PMM Power Mode Parameters table below illustrates the correct state of these input parameters (circuits) in correspondence to the ignition switch position

PMM POWER MODE PARAMETERS

Relay Controlled Power Mode

The body control module (BCM) uses the discrete ignition switch inputs Run/Crank Ignition 1 Voltage, Accessory Voltage, and Ignition 1 Voltage, to distinguish the correct power mode. The BCM, after determining the desired power mode, will activate the appropriate relays for that power mode.

The RAP relay remains on for a timed period after the Ignition key is removed. Refer to RETAINED ACCESSORY POWER (RAP) DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION for more information on the retained accessory power (RAP) function.

BCM Awake/Sleep States

The body control module (BCM) is able to control or perform all of the BCM functions in the awake state. The BCM enters the sleep state when active control or normal monitoring of system functions has stopped and a time limit has passed. The BCM must detect certain wake-up inputs before entering the awake state. The BCM monitors for these inputs during the sleep state.

The BCM will enter the awake state if any of the following wake-up inputs are detected

  1. Activity on the serial data line
  2. Detection of a battery reconnect
  3. Any door open signal
  4. Headlamps ON
  5. Key-in-ignition
  6. Ignition ON
  7. Park lamps ON
  8. Keyless entry or remote start message

The BCM will enter a sleep state when all of the following conditions exist

  1. The ignition switch is OFF, key out.
  2. No activity exists on the serial data line.
  3. No outputs are commanded.
  4. No delay timers are actively counting.
  5. No wake-up inputs are present.

If all these conditions are met, the BCM will enter a low power or sleep condition.

Serial Data Control of Retained Accessory Power (RAP)

The modules receive the power mode message from the body control module (BCM) over the serial data circuits, indicating when the retained accessory power (RAP) power mode is current. The BCM monitors the ignition switch position, battery condition and passenger compartment doors status to determine whether RAP should be initiated. The modules then support the operation of the systems under their control as required by their RAP power mode operation. Components and systems that are active in RAP are also activated anytime the ignition is any position other than OFF.

The BCM sends a serial data power mode message ending the RAP function when one of the following conditions is met

  1. The BCM receives an input indicating the opening of any passenger compartment door after the ignition key is out of the ignition. NOTE: The only door that will turn off the radio during RAP is the driver door. This is a function of the radio and will still turn off after the time limit.
  2. The BCM internal timer for the RAP expires after approximately 10 minutes.
  3. The BCM detects a decrease in battery capacity below a prescribed limit.

Relay Control of Retained Accessory Power (RAP)

The body control module (BCM) keeps the retained accessory power (RAP) relay energized during all power modes, except Off-Awake and Crank. The relay is also energized for approximately 10 minutes after shutting the ignition OFF and removing the key, providing no door is opened. The BCM will de-energize the RAP relay a the same time as the serial data message is sent to end RAP.

The devices powered by the accessory relay during the RAP power mode are the sunroof, power window switches, inside rearview mirror, A/C power outlet, and rear seat entertainment.

Circuit/System Verification

If this DTC is retrieved as a current DTC, replace the module that set the DTC.

B1001 00

Program the body control module (BCM). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS)

  1. If the DTC remains current, replace the BCM.

B1001 45

  1. Program the restraints ID into the BCM.
  2. Retrieve DTCs from the BCM. DTC B1001 45 should change to a history DTC. If the DTC remains current, replace the BCM.

B1001 4B

  1. Program the tire/axle RPO into the BCM.
  2. Retrieve DTCs from the BCM. DTC B1001 4B should change to a history DTC. If the DTC remains current, replace the BCM.

CONTROL MODULE REFERENCES for BCM replacement, setup, and programming

  1. Program the VIN information to the body control module (BCM).
  2. Turn the ignition OFF, wait several seconds and then turn the ignition ON.
  3. Retrieve DTCs from the BCM. DTC B1016 should change to a history DTC. If this DTC is retrieved as a current DTC, replace the module that set the DTC.

Ignition ON, turn the headlamp switch to the park position. Observe the instrument panel lamps. The instrument panel lamp should be ON and while rotating the dimmer switch the instrument panel lamps should change brightens.

Note. If the liftgate is opened after all the modules go the sleep, the dome light will not come on. The liftgate ajar switch input to the BCM will not wake up the BCM once is has gone to sleep, so the dome light will not come on. Once the BCM gets an input to wake it up from the remote keyless entry (RKE) or a door handle, the dome light will turn on when the liftgate is opened. If the driver inadvertently leaves any interior lamp ON, the BCM will turn it OFF after a 20-minute time out. The courtesy lamps will turn OFF immediately if the ignition switch is turned to the ON position or approximately 20 seconds after all doors are closed.

This table identifies which serial data link that a particular module uses for in-vehicle data transmission. Some modules may use more than one data link to communicate. Some modules may have multiple communication circuits passing through them without actively communicating on that data link. This table is used to assist in correcting a communication malfunction. Programming the BCM

Note. The vehicle will not start and many other functions may not operate properly if a replacement BCM is not properly set up. The following procedures must be followed

  1. Programming the BCM
  2. Learning the restraints ID

Note. After the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to default settings. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again.

Learning the Restraints ID

Navigate on the scan tool to Body Control Module > Module Setup > Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM, then follow the instructions on the screen.

Note. After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis

  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  5. Clear all history DTCs.
