Electric Throttle Body Assembly On-Vehicle Inspection

WARNINGIf you touch the throttle valve with your finger when the ignition switch is in the "ON" position and the accelerator pedal is depressed, your finger may be pinched in the gap between the throttle valve and throttle body housing if the accelerator pedal is released. Never touch the throttle valve with your finger when the ignition switch is ON and the accelerator pedal is depressed.
CAUTIONFailure to take proper precautions when handling the electric throttle body assembly, may lead to malfunction of the electric throttle body assembly or damage to its components. Do not disassemble electric throttle body assembly. Do not drop or otherwise expose the electric throttle body assembly to large shock. Any electric throttle body assembly that has received large shock should be replaced. Keep the throttle body housing and/or throttle valve free of dust, metallic particles or other foreign materials. Do not apply undue forces to the throttle valve when checking operation of the throttle valve or performance of the TP sensor; otherwise the plastic gears in the throttle valve actuator will be damaged.

Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor Assembly Inspection

Check APP sensor (main and sub) output voltage as the following steps.

  1. For APP sensor (main), arrange 3 new 1.5 V batteries (1) in series (check that total voltage is 4.5 - 5.0 V) and connect its positive terminal to "Vin 1" terminal (2) and negative terminal to "Ground 1" terminal (3) of sensor. Then using voltmeter, connect positive terminal to "Vout 1" terminal (4) of sensor and negative terminal to battery.
  2. For APP sensor (sub), arrange 3 new 1.5 V batteries (1) in series (check that total voltage is 4.5 - 5.0 V) and connect its positive terminal to "Vin 2" terminal (2) and negative terminal to "Ground 2" terminal (3) of sensor. Then using voltmeter, connect positive terminal to "Vout 2" terminal (4) of sensor and negative terminal to battery.
  3. Measure output voltage variation while accelerator pedal is released and fully depressed as the following specification. If sensor voltage is out of specified value or does not vary linearly as the following graph, replace APP sensor assembly. APP sensor output voltage min. variation while accelerator pedal is released to depressed fully APP sensor (main) [A]: 0.82 - 3.50 V APP sensor (sub) [B]: 0.44 - 1.74 V

Scheme 5: Removal
  1. Remove air cleaner assembly. See «AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-514568-S42483472292012112100000)
  2. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
  3. Drain coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING»(ref-514579-S15347634932012112100000) . WARNING: To avoid danger of being burned, do not remove radiator cap while engine and radiator are still hot. Scalding fluid and steam can be blown out under pressure if cap is taken off too soon.
  4. Disconnect connector from ECT sensor (1).
  5. Remove ECT sensor from water outlet cap.

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Inspection

Reference: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Immerse temperature sensing part of ECT sensor in water (or ice) and measure resistance between sensor terminals while heating water gradually.

If measured resistance doesn't show such characteristic as shown, replace ECT sensor.

  1. Disconnect A/F sensor connector.
  2. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance of sensor heater between terminals "VB" and "GND" at sensor connector. If found faulty, replace A/F sensor. NOTE: Temperature of sensor affects resistance value largely. Make sure that sensor heater is at correct temperature. A/F sensor heater resistance 2 - 3 ohms at 20 °C (68 °F)
  3. Connect A/F sensor connector securely.

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Inspection

  1. Check that O-ring is free from damage.
  2. Check that end face of sensor and signal rotor tooth are free from any metal particles and damage.

  1. Remove metal particles on end face of CMP sensor, if any.
  2. Arrange 12 V battery (1) and connect its positive terminal to "Vin" terminal (2) and negative terminal to "Ground" terminal (3) of sensor. Then using ohmmeter, measure resistance between "Vout" terminal (4) of sensor and negative terminal of battery by passing magnetic substance (iron) (5) while keeping approximately 1 mm (0.03 in.) gap with respect to end face of CMP sensor. If resistance does not vary as specified below, replace CMP sensor. CMP sensor resistance Resistance varies from less than 220 ohms (ON) to infinity (OFF) or from infinity (OFF) to less than 220 ohms (ON)

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Inspection

  1. Check that O-ring is free from damage.
  2. Check that end face of sensor and signal pulley tooth are free from any metal particles and damage.

  1. Remove metal particles on end face of CKP sensor, if any.
  2. Arrange 12 V battery (1) and connect its positive terminal to "Vin" terminal (2) and negative terminal to "Ground" terminal (3) of sensor. Then using ohmmeter, measure resistance between "Vout" terminal (4) of sensor and negative terminal of battery by passing magnetic substance (iron) (5) while keeping approximately 1 mm (0.03 in.) gap with respect to end face of CKP sensor. If resistance does not vary as specified below, replace CKP sensor. Knock Sensor Inspection

  1. Disconnect connector (2) from knock sensor.
  2. Connect oscilloscope (1) as shown in figure.
  3. Check that knock sensor signal (1) shows the following waveform when cylinder block is given a shock by plastic hammer. If faulty condition is found, replace knock sensor.

Scheme 14: Main, Fuel Pump, Starting Motor Control, Throttle Actuator Control and Radiator Cooling Fan Relays
  1. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
  2. Remove main relay (1), fuel pump relay (3), starting motor control relay (2), throttle actuator control relay (4) and/or radiator cooling fan relay (5) from individual circuit fuse box No. 1.
  3. Check that there is no continuity between terminal "C" and "D". If there is continuity, replace relay.
  4. Connect battery positive (+) terminal to terminal "B" of relay. Connect battery negative (-) terminal to terminal "A" of relay. Check for continuity between terminal "C" and "D". If there is no continuity when relay is connected to the battery, replace relay.

Mass Air Flow (MAF) & Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor On-Vehicle Inspection

Note. Before performed this inspection, be sure to read the PRECAUTIONS FOR ECM CIRCUIT INSPECTION .

Scheme 15: Mass Air Flow (MAF) & Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor On-Vehicle Inspection
  1. Disconnect MAF & IAT sensor connector.
  2. Check that voltage of MAF & IAT sensor connector (harness side) between terminals "3" and "4" is battery voltage when ignition switch is in ON position. If faulty condition is found, check power supply circuit, ground circuit and connections.
  3. Check that MAF sensor signal and IAT sensor signal are output properly. See «INSPECTION OF ECM AND ITS CIRCUITS»(ref-514565-S07614596562012112100000) If faulty condition is found, check the following. Wire harness and connections. Mass Air Flow (MAF) & Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Inspection

Reference: MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) & INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

CAUTIONWhen servicing MAF & IAT sensor, be sure to observe the following items. Do not expose MAF & IAT sensor to any shock. If it has been dropped, it should be replaced. Do not heat MAF & IAT sensor more than 100 °C (212 °F). Otherwise, it will be damaged.

  1. Remove MAF & IAT sensor. See «MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) & Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Removal and Installation»(ref-514553-S37752651392012112100000)
  2. Check sensor O-ring (1) for damage and deterioration. If faulty condition is found, replace MAF & IAT sensor.
  3. Measure resistance between sensor terminals "1" and "2" while blowing hot air to temperature sensing part (2) of MAF & IAT sensor (3) using hot air drier (4). If measured resistance is out of specified value, replace MAF & IAT sensor. Intake air temperature sensor resistance -20 °C (-4 °F): 13.6 - 18.4 kohms 20 °C (68 °F): 2.21 - 2.69 kohms 60 °C (140 °F): 0.493 - 0.667 kohms

  1. Remove MAF & IAT sensor. See «MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) & Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Removal and Installation»(ref-514553-S37752651392012112100000)
  2. Connect battery (2) and voltmeter (3) to MAF & IAT sensor (1) as shown in figure.
  3. Check that voltage varies depending on amount of blowing air as the following graph. If faulty condition is found, replace MAF & IAT sensor.

IMT Valve Actuator Inspection

CAUTIONThe IMT valve actuator may be damaged if battery voltage is applied to it for longer than 10 seconds. Limit the time of battery voltage application to the IMT valve actuator to no more than 10 seconds.

  2. Check resistance between terminals of OCV connector (1). If check result is not satisfactory, replace OCV. Oil control valve resistance 6.7 - 7.7 ohms (at 20 °C (68 °F))
  3. Connect battery to OCV connector (1) as shown in figure, check operating sound at the same time operate spool valve (2).
