Maintenance Information Suzuki Swift II

VIN LOCATION

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is stamped on a metal plate at the upper left side of the dash, visible through the windshield. It is also located at the rear of the engine compartment attached to the firewall.

SEVERE & NORMAL SERVICE DEFINITIONS

Note. Use the Severe Service schedule if the vehicle to be serviced is operated under ANY (one or more) of these conditions

Service is recommended at mileage intervals based on vehicle operation. Service schedules are based on the following primary operating conditions

Normal Service

1. Driven More Than 10 Miles Daily
2. No Operating Conditions From Severe Service Schedule

Severe Service (Unique Driving Conditions)

1. Repeated Short Trips Of Less Than 4 Miles
2. Driving On Rough Or Muddy Roads
3. Driving On Dusty Roads
4. Driving In Extremely Cold Weather On Trips Of Less Than 4 Miles

CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT

The condition of camshaft drive belts should always be checked on vehicles which have more than 50,000 miles. Although some manufacturers do not recommend belt replacement at a specified mileage, others require it at 60,000-100,000 miles. A camshaft drive belt failure may cause extensive damage to internal engine components on most engines, although some designs do not allow piston-to-valve contact. These designs are often called "Free Wheeling".

Many manufacturers changed their maintenance and warranty schedules in the mid-1980's to reflect timing belt inspection and/or replacement at 50,000-60,000 miles. Most service interval schedules in this manual reflect these changes.

Belts or components should be inspected and replaced if any of the following conditions exist

1. Cracks Or Tears In Belt Surface
2. Missing, Damaged, Cracked Or Rounded Teeth
3. Oil Contamination
4. Damaged Or Faulty Tensioners
5. Incorrect Tension Adjustment

Replace timing belt every 36,000 miles or 36 months. On GTi models there is no manufacturer's recommended replacement intervals.

WHEEL TIGHTENING

Tighten all wheel lug nuts to 36-51 ft. lbs. (48.8-69.2 N.m).

BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS

Use B.C.I. group 24 batteries with a 45 amp hour rating. Manufacturer's battery model number is 55B24R(S)-MF.

WHEELS & TIRES

DO NOT mix tires of different design such as steel belted radials with radial bias belted or bias ply tires. Mixing tire types will adversely affect road handling and may lead to loss of vehicle control. When using snow tires they must be installed on all four wheels for maneuverability and safety. DO NOT use tire chains on rear wheels.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

LIMITED NEW CAR WARRANTY (1989-90)

Manufacturer warrants vehicle to be free of defects in material and workmanship for a period of 24 months or 24,000 miles whichever occurs first. Commencing with the date the vehicle is first placed in service. Manufacturer will pay towing expenses (maximum 70.00), to the nearest SUZUKI dealer, during the warranty period if the failure is covered under the warranty. Original body panels are covered against perforation due to corrosion for a period of 36 months, regardless of mileage.

LIMITED NEW CAR WARRANTY (1991-93)

Warranty coverage is identical to previous years except for warranty period. Coverage is for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

PRINCIPAL EXCLUSIONS

The following items are not warranted

1. Maintenance services such as scheduled oil changes, and mechanical adjustments. Wheel balances and alignment.
2. Service items such as spark plugs, filters, brake pads or linings, clutch discs, windshield wiper blades, V-belts, light bulbs and fuses which are subject to normal wear and tear.
3. Tires, which are warranted by their respective manufacturers.
4. Damage which is caused by lack of service as required by manufacturer's maintenance schedule or from negligence, accidents, corrosion from road salt, environmental influences or service contrary to manufacturer's specifications.
5. Non-SUZUKI parts, used as replacement parts, to include any damage caused by the use of such parts.

EMISSION-RELATED DEFECT & PERFORMANCE WARRANTY

Manufacturer warrants to the original and subsequence purchasers that the vehicle conforms to U.S. and California emission regulations at the time of manufacture. That the vehicle is warranted should it fail to conform with applicable regulations for a period of 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

FUSE PANEL LOCATION

Fuse panel is located under the instrument panel above the driver's left knee. Main service fuses, which supply the fuse panel, are located in the engine compartment, near the battery.
