Ignition System Construction
The N32A engine uses an electronic ignition system ignition system that has neither distributor nor high-tension cords. It consists of the following
- ECM ECM monitors engine and vehicle conditions through the signals from the relevant sensors, determines the most suitable ignition timing and sends correct signals to ignition coil assemblies.
- Ignition coil assemblies The ignition coil assembly is a combination of an ignitor and ignition coils. It is provided for each cylinder and the ignition coils fit directly over each spark plug. The current to the primary coil is turned on and off according to signal from the ECM. When the current flowing through the primary coil is broken, a high voltage is induced in the secondary coil. The high voltage is applied directly to the spark plug of each cylinder.
- Spark plugs
- CMP (Camshaft position) sensor and CKP (Crankshaft position) sensor Using signals from these sensors, ECM identifies a specific cylinder whose piston is in the compression stroke, detects the crank angle and adjusts the initial ignition timing automatically. ECM optimally controls the ignition timing also using signals from other sensors/switches in addition to signals from CMP and CKP sensors

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION CHART
Scheme 11
- Remove engine cover. CAUTION: When removing engine cover, be sure to lift up its front end to prevent breakage of engine cover claws.
- Remove air cleaner outlet hose.
- Remove intake upper manifold, see «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-j24b__intake-manifold-removal-and-installation) .
- Disconnect all fuel injector connectors from injectors. WARNING: Be sure to disconnect injector connectors. Without disconnection of injector connectors, combustible gas may come out from spark plug holes during this test and may get ignited in engine room.
- Install intake upper manifold, see «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-j24b__intake-manifold-removal-and-installation) .
- Remove spark plug and check it for condition and type, see «SPARK PLUG INSPECTION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-n32a__spark-plug-inspection) .
- If check result is OK, connect ignition coil connector (1) to ignition coil assembly (2) and connect spark plug (3) to ignition coil assembly. Ground spark plug.
- Crank engine and check if each spark plug sparks.
- If any spark plug does not produce sparks, inspect ignition system parts, see «IGNITION SYSTEM CHECK»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-n32a__ignition-system-check) .
Removal
- Remove ignition coil assemblies, see «IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-n32a) .
- Remove spark plugs.
Installation
Reference: SPARK PLUG INSPECTION
- Install spark plugs and tighten them to specified torque. Spark plug type : ACDelco 41-990 (platinum) Tightening torque Spark plug: 18 N.m (1.8 kg-m, 13.5 lbf-ft)
- Install ignition coil assemblies, see «IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-n32a) .
Spark Plug Inspection
Reference: SPARK PLUG REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When servicing an iridium/platinum spark plug, do not touch the center electrode. The center electrode on this type of spark plug is slender and can be damaged if a mechanical force is applied. Do not clean or adjust gap for iridium/platinum spark plugs. |
Inspect spark plug for
- Electrode wear
- Carbon deposits
- Insulator damage
- Spark plug air gap
If any abnormality is found, replace it with new plug.

1.1 - 1.2 mm (0.043 - 0.047 in.)

- Disconnect negative cable from battery.
- Remove engine cover. CAUTION: When removing engine cover, be sure to lift up its front end to prevent breakage of engine cover claws.
- Remove air cleaner outlet hose.
- Disconnect ignition coil connectors.
- Remove ignition coil bolts (1) and then pull out ignition coil assembly (2).

Scheme 14
- Install ignition coil assembly (2).
- Tighten ignition coil bolts (1) to specified torque, and then connect ignition coil connectors. Tightening torque Ignition coil bolt (a): 10 N.m (1.0 kg-m, 7.5 lbf-ft)
- Install air cleaner outlet hose.
- Install engine cover.
- Connect negative cable to battery.
Ignition Coil Assembly Inspection
Check ignition coil assembly for the following
- Damage
- Deterioration
- Corrosion of terminal
If any abnormality is found, replace ignition coil assembly.
Ignition Timing Inspection
Note. Ignition timing is not adjustable. If ignition timing is out of specification, check ignition system related parts. Before starting engine, place select lever in "P" range, and set parking brake.
Scheme 15
- Connect SUZUKI scan tool to DLC (1) with ignition switch in OFF position. Special Tool (A): SUZUKI scan tool (SUZUKI-SDT)
- Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
- Make sure that all electrical loads except ignition are turned off.
- Make be sure that idle speed conforms to specification.
- Check ignition timing using scan tool. ignition timing Standard: 5 ± 3° BTDC (at specified idle speed) Ignition order 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
- If ignition timing is out of specification, check the following. CKP sensor CKP sensor plate TP sensor CMP sensor VVT system Knock sensor
- Check that increasing engine speed advances ignition timing. If check results are not satisfactory, check CKP sensor and ECM.
