Ignition System Description
The J24B engine uses an electronic ignition system that has neither distributor nor high-tension cords. It consists of the following
- ECM ECM monitors engine and vehicle conditions through the signals from the relevant sensors, determines the most suitable ignition timing and sends correct signals to ignition coil assemblies.
- Ignition coil assemblies The ignition coil assembly is a combination of an ignitor and ignition coils. It is provided for each cylinder and the ignition coils fit directly over each spark plug. The current to the primary coil is turned on and off according to the signal from the ECM. When the current flowing through the primary coil is broken, a high voltage is induced in the secondary coil. The high voltage is applied directly to the spark plug of each cylinder.
- Spark plugs
- CMP (camshaft position) sensor and CKP (crankshaft position) sensor Using signals from these sensors, ECM identifies a specific cylinder whose piston is in the compression stroke, defects the crank angle and adjusts the initial ignition timing automatically.
- TP (throttle position) sensor, ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor, MAF (mass air flow) sensor, IAT (intake air temperature) sensor, knock sensor and other sensors/switches ECM controls the ignition timing also using signals from these sensors/switches in addition to signals from the CMP and CKP sensors.

- Remove spark plugs. See «SPARK PLUG REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-j24b) .
- Inspect spark plugs. See «SPARK PLUG INSPECTION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-j24b__spark-plug-inspection) . WARNING: Be sure to disconnect injector connectors. Without disconnection of injector connectors, combustible gas may come out from spark plug holes during this test and may get ignited in engine compartment. NOTE: For identification of each cylinder, refer to «PRECAUTIONS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF CYLINDER»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-general-information-and-diagnosis-j24b) .
- Disconnect injector connectors.
- Connect ignition coil connector (3) to ignition coil assembly.
- Connect spark plug (1) to ignition coil assembly (3), and ground spark plug.
- Crank engine and check if each spark plug produces sparks.
- If any spark plug does not produce sparks, check ignition system. See «IGNITION SYSTEM CHECK»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-j24b__ignition-system-check) .
Removal
- Remove ignition coil assemblies. See «IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-j24b) .
- Remove spark plugs from cylinder head. See «SPARK PLUG REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-j24b) .
Installation
Reference: SPARK PLUG INSPECTION
- Reverse removal procedure noting the following. Tighten spark plugs to specified torque. Tightening torque Spark plug: 25 N.m (2.5 kg-m, 18.5 lbf-ft)
- Install ignition coil assemblies. See «IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-j24b) .
Spark Plug Inspection
Reference: SPARK PLUG REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When servicing an iridium spark plug, do not touch the center electrode. The center electrode on this type of spark plug is slender and can be damaged if a mechanical force is applied. Do not clean or adjust gap for the iridium spark plugs. |
Check spark plug for
- Electrode wear
- Carbon deposits
- Insulator damage
If any abnormality is found for nickel spark plugs, adjust air gap, clean with spark plug cleaner or replace them with specified new plugs.
For iridium spark plugs, replace them with specified new plugs.

- Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery.
- Remove engine cover.
- Disconnect ignition coil connectors (1).
- Remove ignition coil assembly (2).

Reverse removal procedure noting the following.
- Tighten ignition coil bolts to specified torque. Tightening torque Ignition coil bolt (a): 11 N.m (1.1 kg-m, 8.5 lbf-ft)
Ignition Coil Assembly Inspection
Check ignition coil assembly for the following
- Damage
- Deterioration
- Corrosion of terminal
If any abnormality is found, replace ignition coil assembly. See IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Ignition Timing Inspection
Reference: SPARK PLUG REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Note. Ignition timing is not adjustable. If ignition timing is out of specification, check ignition system related parts. For identification of each cylinder, refer to PRECAUTIONS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF CYLINDER .

- For 4 A/T model, place select lever in "P" and apply parking brake, before starting engine For 5 M/T model, place gear shift lever in "Neutral" and apply parking brake, before starting engine.
- Turn OFF ignition switch and connect SUZUKI scan tool to DLC (1). Special Tool (A): SUZUKI scan tool (SUZUKI-SDT)
- Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
- Make sure that all electrical loads except ignition are in OFF position.
- Make sure accelerator pedal is not depressed.
- Make sure that idle speed is around specification.
- Fix ignition timing using "Fixed Spark" in "Active Test" mode on SUZUKI scan tool.
- Set timing light according to the following procedure. Point arrow on sensor of timing light to ignition coil assembly No. 1. Clip special tool on "BLK/WHT" wire of ignition coil harness for cylinder No. 1. Special Tool (A): 09930-76420 Initial ignition timing Fixed with SUZUKI scan tool: 5 ± 3° BTDC (at specified idle speed) Ignition order 1 - 3 - 4 - 2
- If ignition timing is out of specification, check the following. CKP sensor CKP sensor plate TP sensor CMP sensor CMP sensor rotor tooth of intake camshaft Vehicle speed signal from ABS/ESP® control module APP sensor
- After checking initial ignition timing, release ignition timing fixation by using SUZUKI scan tool.
- With engine idling (throttle opening at closed position and vehicle stopped), check that ignition timing is about 8° ± 5° BTDC. Also, check that increasing engine speed advances ignition timing. If the check results are not satisfactory, check CKP sensor and ECM.
