BLEEDING PROCEDURE

CAUTIONDO NOT allow reservoir to run dry during brake bleeding procedure. Use only clean, uncontaminated brake fluid. DO NOT mix different brands of brake fluid, as they may not be compatible.

Raise and support vehicle. Fill master cylinder reservoir to maximum mark with clean brake fluid. Bleed brakes in sequence. See BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. After bleeding brakes, depress brake pedal with a force equal to an abrupt stop. If sponginess exists, repeat bleeding procedure. For ABS-equipped models, see appropriate ANTI-LOCK article.

BRAKE BOOSTER PUSHROD (BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT)

Remove vacuum brake booster from vehicle. Measure distance between booster mounting surface (with gasket on) and center of clevis pin hole. (Scheme 4) Adjust push rod if not within specification. See BOOSTER PUSHROD LENGTH table.

ApplicationIn. (mm)
Esteem4.51-4.55 (114.5-115.5)
Grand Vitara & Vitara4.31-4.35 (109.5-110.5)
Swift3.92-3.96 (99.5-100.5)

All Models

Remove vacuum brake booster from vehicle. Push piston rod several times to ensure reaction disc is in place. Remove piston rod seal from booster (if equipped). Set Booster Piston Rod Gauge (09950-96010) on master cylinder, until it contacts piston. Turn gauge upside down and place it on booster. No clearance should exist. Adjust by turning adjusting bolt of booster piston rod using Special Tool (09952-16010).

BRAKE PEDAL CLEARANCE

  1. Start engine. Depress brake pedal 3-4 times. Depress and hold pedal with 66 lb. (30 kg) force. Measure pedal to floor clearance "C". (Scheme 5) Clearance should be 3.15" (80 mm) on Esteem, 2.36" (60 mm) on Swift and 3.94" (100 mm) on Grand Vitara and Vitara.
  2. If clearance is less than specified, check rear brake shoes for wear limit. Check for air in brake lines. Check pushrod length adjustment.

STOPLIGHT SWITCH

Loosen stoplight switch lock nut. Pull brake pedal up. Adjust stoplight switch position so clearance between end of switch thread and brake pedal contact is .06-.08" (1.5-2.0 mm). Tighten lock nut.

PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE

Note. Before adjusting parking brake, ensure pedal height is correct and brake shoes are not worn beyond limit.

Loosen lock nut on end of parking brake cable. Hold cable nut to prevent cable from twisting and tighten adjusting nut. Pull parking brake handle slowly with 44-55 lbs. (20-25 kg) of force and count number of clicks. There should be 3-6 clicks on Esteem and Swift and 5-7 clicks on Grand Vitara and Vitara. After adjustment, ensure rear wheels turn freely with parking brake off.

MASTER CYLINDER

Note. DO NOT permit brake fluid to contact painted surfaces.

LOAD SENSING PROPORTIONING VALVE (LSPV)

Note. LSPV assembly is not serviceable and should be replaced if defective.
