IDENTIFICATION
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is used for correct application of component parts and assemblies. VIN location is at top left of instrument panel. Transaxle is identified by transaxle identification number. Transaxle identification number is located on top of transaxle near engine mounting surface. (Scheme 32) This number contains transaxle production year, production month and serial number.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Transaxle consists of a lock-up torque converter, oil pump, valve body assembly, 4 multi-disc clutch assemblies, 2 planetary gear sets, one multi-disc clutch style brake and 2 one-way clutches. (Scheme 33)
The Esteem 4-speed overdrive (O/D) transaxle is electronically controlled. Transaxle shifting and torque converter lock-up are controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM), 2 shift solenoids and a Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) control solenoid valve. The TCM receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control TCC control solenoid valve, and shift solenoids No. 1 and 2 on transaxle valve body. Solenoids are responsible for transaxle shifting and TCC apply (lock-up). An O/D cut switch (mounted on selector lever) is used to select O/D gear.
