- Set vehicle on the lift.
- Disconnect battery ground cable. (Scheme 16): Disconnecting Battery Ground Cable
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Remove front right side fuel tank cover. (Scheme 17): Removing Front Right Side Fuel Tank Cover
- Drain fuel from fuel tank.
- Set a container under the vehicle and remove drain plug from fuel tank. (Scheme 18): Draining Fuel From Fuel Tank
- Tighten fuel drain plug and install front right side tank cover. Tightening torque: 26 N.m (2.65 kgf-m, 19.2 ft-lb) (Scheme 19): Tightening Fuel Drain Plug Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb) (Scheme 20): Installing Front Right Side Tank Cover
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove sub service hole cover. (Scheme 21): Removing Sub Service Hole Cover
- Disconnect connector from fuel sub level sensor. (Scheme 22): Disconnecting Connector From Fuel Sub Level Sensor
- Disconnect fuel jet pump hose. (Scheme 23): Disconnecting Fuel Jet Pump Hose
- Remove fuel sub level sensor. (Scheme 24): Removing Fuel Sub Level Sensor
- Drain fuel from fuel tank by using hand pump. WARNING: Do not use a motor pump when draining fuel.
- After draining fuel, reinstall fuel sub level sensor. Tightening torque: T: 4.4 N.m (0.45 kgf-m, 3.3 ft-lb) (Scheme 25): Reinstalling Fuel Sub Level Sensor NOTE: If you have not removed fuel tank yet, proceed with the procedure below for installation. Connect fuel jet pump hose. (Scheme 26): Connecting Fuel Jet Pump Hose Connect connector from fuel sub level sensor. - Remove holder clip which secures fuel tank cord on bracket. (Scheme 29): Removing Holder Clip
- Disconnect connector of fuel tank cord to rear harness. (Scheme 30): Disconnecting Connector Of Fuel Tank Cord
- Push grommet which holds fuel tank cord on service hole cover into body side. (Scheme 31): Installing Fuel Tank Cord Grommet
- Separate quick connector of fuel delivery (A) and return hose (B). See «REMOVAL»(ref-178257-S25782686432005061400000) Fuel Delivery, Return and Evaporation Lines. (Scheme 32): Separating Quick Connector
- Remove parking brake cable. Remove console box console. See «REMOVAL»(ref-175480-S36444997272005042100000), Console Box. Remove parking brake bracket and disconnect parking brake cable from equalizer. (Scheme 33): Removing Parking Brake Bracket & Cable

- Remove wheel nuts from rear wheels.
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Remove rear wheel.
- Remove front side fuel tank cover. (Scheme 36): Removing Front Side Fuel Tank Cover
- Remove rear exhaust pipe and muffler. NOTE: To facilitate removal, apply a coat of SUBARU CRC to matching area of rubber cushions in advance. SUBARU CRC (Part No. 004301003) Separate rear exhaust pipe from front exhaust pipe. (Scheme 37): Separating Rear Exhaust Pipe From Front Exhaust Pipe Remove left and right rubber cushions. - Disconnect connector from ABS sensor. (Scheme 40): Disconnecting Connector From ABS Sensor
- Remove bolts which hold parking brake cable holding bracket.
- Remove parking brake cable from cabin by forcibly pulling it backward. (Scheme 41): Removing Parking Brake Cable Bolts
- Remove bolts which hold parking brake cable holding bracket. (Scheme 42): Removing Holding Bracket Bolts
- Remove bolts which hold rear brake hoses holding bracket. (Scheme 43): Removing Rear Brake Hoses Holding Bracket Bolts
- Remove rear brake caliper, then tie it up to the body side of the vehicle as shown in figure. (Rear disk brake model) (Scheme 44): Removing Rear Brake Caliper
- Disconnect brake pipes from wheel cylinder, (Rear drum brake model). See «DISC & DRUM»(ref-162794). (Scheme 45): Disconnecting Brake Pipes From Wheel Cylinder
- Remove rear suspension assembly. WARNING: A helper is required to perform this work. Support rear differential with transmission jack. Remove bolt which holds rear shock absorber to rear suspension arm. (Scheme 46): Removing Rear Shock Absorber Bolt Remove bolts which secure rear suspension assembly to body. - Remove rear side fuel tank cover. (Scheme 48): Removing Rear Side Fuel Tank Covers
- Disconnect fuel filler hose (A) and fuel tank pressure sensor (B) hose. (Scheme 49): Disconnecting Fuel Filler Hose & Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Hose
- Disconnect air vent hose (A) from evaporation pipe assembly and disconnect evaporation hose (I) from pressure control solenoid valve. (Scheme 50): Disconnecting Air Vent Hose & Evaporation Hose
- Support fuel tank with transmission jack, remove bolts from bands and dismount fuel tank from the vehicle. WARNING: A helper is required to perform this work. (Scheme 51): Removing Bolts From Bands

- Support fuel tank with transmission jack and push fuel tank harness into access hole with grommet.
- Set fuel tank and temporarily tighten bolts of fuel tank bands. WARNING: A helper is required to perform this work. (Scheme 52): Temporarily Tightening Fuel Tank Bands
- Connect air vent hose (A) to evaporation pipe assembly and connect evaporation hose (I) to pressure control solenoid valve. (Scheme 53): Connecting Air Vent Hose To Evaporation Pipe Assembly & Evaporation Hose
- Connect fuel filler hose (A) and fuel tank pressure sensor hose (B). (Scheme 54): Connecting Fuel Filler Hose & Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Hose
- Tighten band mounting bolts. Tightening torque: 33 N.m (3.4 kgf-m, 25 ft-lb) (Scheme 55): Tightening Band Mounting Bolts
- Install rear side fuel tank cover. Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb) (Scheme 56): Installing Rear Side Fuel Tank Covers
- Install rear suspension assembly. WARNING: A helper is required to perform this work. Support rear suspension assembly and then tighten bolts which secure rear suspension assembly. Tightening torque: T1: 172 N.m (17.5 kgf-m, 127 ft-lb) T2: 108 N.m (11.0 kgf-m, 80 ft-lb) T3: 66 N.m (6.7 kgf-m, 48 ft-lb) (Scheme 57): Installing Rear Suspension Assembly Tighten bolt which holds rear shock absorber to rear suspension arm. - Connect brake pipes to wheel cylinder, (Rear drum brake model). See «DISC & DRUM»(ref-162794). (Scheme 59): Connecting Brake Pipes To Wheel Cylinder, (Rear Drum Brake Model)
- Install rear brake caliper, (Rear disk brake model). See «DISC & DRUM»(ref-162794). (Scheme 60): Installing Rear Brake Caliper (Rear Disk Brake Model)
- Tighten bolt which holds rear brake hoses holding bracket. Tightening torque: 33 N.m (3.4 kgf-m, 25 ft-lb) (Scheme 61): Tightening Rear Brake Hoses Holding Bracket Bolt
- Install parking brake cable to cabin by forcibly pushing it forward.
- Tighten bolts which hold parking brake cable holding bracket. Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb) (Scheme 62): Tightening Parking Brake Cable Holding Bracket (1 Of 2) Tightening torque: 32 N.m (3.3 kgf-m, 23.9 ft-lb) (Scheme 63): Tightening Parking Brake Cable Holding Bracket (2 Of 2)
- Connect connector to ABS sensor. (Scheme 64): Connecting Connector To ABS Sensor
- Install propeller shaft. See «INSTALLATION»(ref-175738-S42154478582005042600000), Propeller Shaft.
- Install rear exhaust pipe and muffler. NOTE: To facilitate the procedure, apply a coat of SUBARU CRC to matching area of rubber cushions in advance. SUBARU CRC (Part No. 004301003) Install left and right rubber cushions. (Scheme 65): Installing Left & Right Rubber Cushions Install front rubber cushion and attach muffler assembly. (Scheme 66): Installing Front Rubber Cushion & Attach Muffler Assembly Install rear exhaust pipe to center exhaust pipe. Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb) (Scheme 67): Installing Rear Exhaust Pipe To Center Exhaust Pipe
- Install front side fuel tank cover. Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb) (Scheme 68): Installing Front Side Fuel Tank Cover
- Install rear wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Tighten wheel nuts to rear wheel.
- Install parking brake cable. See «INSTALLATION»(ref-177136-S16891092612005052700000), Parking Brake Lever. (Scheme 69): Installing Parking Brake Cable
- Install console box. See «INSTALLATION»(ref-175480-S02375529052005042100000), Console Box.

- Connect fuel jet pump hose. (Scheme 72): Connecting Fuel Jet Pump Hose
- Install trunk room trim. (Sedan model)
