BELT TENSION
Note. Models equipped with 6-cylinder engines have an automatic belt tensioner with no adjustment required.
Measure deflection with 22 lbs. (10 kg) force applied on longest run of belt. If deflection is not within specification, adjust belt. See BELT DEFLECTION table.

BELT DEFLECTION
GENERATOR OUTPUT
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check charge indicator light. If indicator light illuminates, go to next step. If indicator light does not illuminate, turn engine off and go to step 5 .
- Start engine and let idle. Check charge indicator light. If indicator light does not illuminate or blink, go to next step. If indicator light is still illuminated or blinks, check fan belt tension, "S" and "B" terminals for proper contact and generator output. See «GENERATOR OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-121720-S41815149232001090500000) table.
- Check voltage at battery terminals. If voltage is 12.5-15.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is greater than 15.5 volts, replace regulator assembly. If voltage is less than 12.5 volts, check IC voltage regulator. See «IC VOLTAGE REGULATOR»(ref-121720-S15169198102001090500000) under BENCH TESTING. If regulator is okay, replace generator assembly.
- Turn headlights on. Check charge indicator light. If indicator light illuminates or blinks, check diode assembly. See «DIODE ASSEMBLY»(ref-121720-S23745567622001090500000) under BENCH TESTING. If indicator light does not illuminate or blink, system is functioning properly at this time.
- Disconnect generator harness connector. Ground terminal "L" (Brown wire) at generator harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check charge indicator light. If indicator light does not illuminate, repair indicator light circuit and/or replace bulb. If indicator light illuminates, check IC voltage regulator and positive terminal of diode. See «IC VOLTAGE REGULATOR»(ref-121720-S15169198102001090500000) under BENCH TESTING and «DIODE ASSEMBLY»(ref-121720-S23745567622001090500000) under BENCH TESTING.

GENERATOR OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS
BRUSHES
Inspect brushes for freedom of movement in holder (no binding). Clean brush holder and springs if necessary. Check brushes for cracks and wear. Check brush springs for corrosion or damage. Replace brushes if worn near or beyond limit line. See BRUSH WEAR LIMIT table.

BRUSH WEAR LIMIT
IC VOLTAGE REGULATOR
Note. If any of the following conditions are not met, replace IC voltage regulator.
- Connect test equipment to indicated IC voltage regulator terminals. (Scheme 9) Use a variable DC voltage power supply with a capacity of at least 20 volts, two 12-volt 1.4-watt light bulbs, three 12-volt switches, 0-50 volt voltmeter and an auxiliary generator with a capacity of 5-30 volts and one kHz.
- Turn switch No. 1 to ON position. Ensure switches No. 2 and 3 are in OFF position. Set power supply to 12 volts. Observe light bulb operation. Light No. 1 should be dim and light No. 2 should be bright.
- Turn switches No. 1 and 2 to ON position. Ensure switch No. 3 is in OFF position. Light No. 1 should be on or blinking and light No. 2 should be off.
- With switches in same position as in previous step, set power supply to 16 volts. Light No. 1 should be off or dimly blinking and light No. 2 should be off.
- Turn switch No. 2 to ON position. Ensure switches No. 1 and 3 are in OFF position. Set power supply to 12 volts. Light No. 1 should be on or blinking and light No. 2 should be on.
- Turn switch No. 1 to OFF position. Ensure switches No. 2 and 3 are in ON position. Set voltage supply to 18 volts. Lights No. 1 and 2 should be on.

ROTOR
- Measure slip ring outer wear. If worn greater than .04" (1.0 mm) for models equipped with 4-cylinder engine, or .024 (.6 mm) on models equipped with 6-cylinder, replace rotor. See «SLIP RING STANDARD DIAMETER & WEAR LIMIT»(ref-121720-S40368719822001090500000) table. Inspect slip rings for contamination or roughness. Polish with No. 500 or 600 emery paper or crocus cloth. - Check continuity between rotor slip rings. If continuity does not exist, replace rotor. Connect ohmmeter between each slip ring and rotor. If continuity exists, replace rotor assembly. Check rotor bearing for noise and ease of rotation when turning. Replace as necessary.
STATOR
Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between stator core leads. If continuity does not exist between any 2 leads, replace stator. Connect ohmmeter between stator core and each stator lead. If continuity does not exist, stator is okay. If continuity exists, stator is grounded and must be replaced.
