CAUTION

1. Wear working clothing, including a cap, protective goggles, and protective shoes during operation.
2. Remove contamination including dirt and corrosion before removal, installation or disassembly.
3. Keep the disassembled parts in order and protect them from dust or dirt.
4. Before removal, installation or disassembly, be sure to clarify the failure. Avoid unnecessary removal, installation, disassembly, and replacement.
5. Use SUBARU genuine grease etc. or the equivalent. Do not mix grease etc. with that of another grade or from other manufacturers.
6. Be sure to tighten fasteners including bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
7. Place shop jacks or safety stands at the specified points.
8. Apply grease onto sliding or revolution surfaces before installation.
9. Before installing O-rings or snap rings, apply sufficient amount of grease to avoid damage and deformation.
10. Before securing a part on a vice, place cushioning material such as wood blocks, aluminum plate, or shop cloth between the part and the vice.
11. Before disconnecting electrical connectors, be sure to disconnect negative terminal from battery.

1. Remove the cable. Prior to removal, set lever to "N" position. Remove front exhaust pipe. (Scheme 511): Removing Front Exhaust Pipe Separate cable from transmission lever. Remove clamp from transmission case. 2. Remove console box. See «CONSOLE BOX»(ref-177950-S28746956442005060800000).
3. Disconnect the connectors, then remove the six screws to take out the select lever assembly from the body. (Scheme 514): Removing Select Lever Assembly

1. Mount the select lever onto the vehicle body.
2. Tighten the six bolts to install the select lever to the vehicle body, then connect connectors. Tightening torque: 4.5 N.m (0.46 kgf-m, 3.3 ft-lb) (Scheme 515): Installing Select Lever To Vehicle Body
3. Install console box.
4. Set location of select lever at "N" position.
5. Set location of selector arm installed on the transmission body at "N" position. (Scheme 516): Setting Location Of Select Lever & Selector Arm
6. Pass inner cable through selector arm pin and then connect it using a washer and snap pin.
7. Attach outer cable to plate on transmission case with the bolts. Tightening torque: 33 N.m (3.4 kgf-m, 25 ft-lb) (Scheme 517): Installing Outer Cable To Plate On Transmission Case
8. Insert the thread portion of the other inner cable and into the connector hole of the select lever, and fix the other outer cable end to the bracket. Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb)

10. After completion of fitting, make sure that the select lever operates smoothly all across the operating range.
11. Connect the harnesses and check the following items. The engine starts operating when select lever is in position "P", but not in other positions. The back-up light is lit when the select lever is in position "R", but not in other positions.
12. Check select lever operation. WARNING: Stop the engine while checking operation of select lever. Check that select lever does not move from "N" to "R" without pushing the button. Check that select lever does not move from "R" to "P" without pushing the button. Check that select lever does not move from "P" to "R" without pushing the button. 13. Check shift-lock system. Ensure ignition switch rotates from "ACC" to "LOCK" when the select lever is set at "P". Also check that ignition key can be removed only from the "LOCK" position. Ensure select lever moves from "P" to any other position when the brake pedal is depressed with ignition key set at "ON" or "START".

1. Remove connector from plate. (Scheme 520): Removing Connector From Plate
2. Remove indicator light and two screws.
3. Remove retainer spring, then pull up select lever grip with indicator cover for holding select lever button. CAUTION: Pull the select lever grip carefully so that the select lever button may not jump out. (Scheme 521): Removing Indicator Light & Other Components From Select Lever
4. Remove shift-lock solenoid and "P" position switch. (Scheme 522): Removing Shift-Lock Solenoid & "P" Position Switch
5. Remove cap and clip, then extract pin.
