- Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to chassis ground, backprobe ECM harness connector terminal No. 78. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Place transmission in Park or Neutral. If voltage reading is zero volts or less, go to next step. If voltage reading is greater than one volt, go to step 3).
- With DVOM still connected to ECM harness connector terminal No. 78, move transmission shifter to another gear. If voltage reading is 4.5-5.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not 4.5-5.5 volts, check for poor terminal contact in ECM harness connector. If terminal contacts are okay, replace ECM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM and TCM harness connectors. Check resistance between ECM harness connector terminal No. 78 and TCM harness connector terminal No. 11. If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than one ohm, check for open in harness between ECM and TCM connectors.
- Check resistance between ECM harness connector terminal No. 78 and chassis ground. If resistance is 1000 ohms or less, check for short to ground in harness between ECM and TCM connectors. If resistance is greater than 10 ohms, go to next step.
- Check resistance between TCM harness connector terminal No. 12 and chassis ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, check for open in inhibitor switch ground circuit.
- Check resistance between TCM harness connector terminals No. 11 and 12 with transmission is Park and in Neutral. Resistance in both positions should be 10 ohms or less. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, check for open in harness between switch and TCM connectors. If circuit is okay, replace inhibitor switch.
- Place transmission in any other gear position (R, D, 1, 2 or 3). Resistance should be 1000 ohms or greater. If resistance is as specified, check selector cable to inhibitor switch for binding or improper adjustment. Adjust or replace cable as necessary. If cable or adjustment is okay, replace ECM. If resistance is not as specified, check for short in transmission harness. If circuit is okay, replace inhibitor switch.
