AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS

SERVICE INTERVALS

Check fluid level in transaxle and differential every month. Under normal operating conditions, change transaxle and differential fluid every 30,000 miles. If vehicle is operated under severe operating conditions, change transaxle and differential fluid every 15,000 miles.

Checking Fluid Level When Warm

Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level surface, and set parking brake. Engage transaxle in all gear positions. Set transaxle selector lever in "P" position with engine idling. Remove dipstick and clean with cloth. (Scheme 1) Check fluid level. Fluid level should be between upper "B" and lower "C" marks on dipstick in HOT range. Add fluid if necessary. DO NOT overfill.

Checking Fluid Level When Cold

Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake. Engage transaxle in all gear positions. Set transaxle selector lever in "P" position with engine idling. Remove dipstick and clean with cloth. Ensure fluid level is between upper "B" and lower "C" marks on dipstick in COLD range. Add fluid if necessary. DO NOT overfill.

Front Differential

Park vehicle on level surface with engine off. Remove Yellow handled dipstick located on top of differential and clean with cloth. (Scheme 1) Check fluid level. Level should be between "C" and "B" marks. Add fluid if necessary.

Transaxle

Use Dexron III ATF.

Front Differentials

Use API GL-5 80W-90 gear oil.

DIFFERENTIAL FLUID CAPACITIES

  1. Allow engine to cool for 3-4 hours. Raise and support vehicle. Remove drain plug. Drain transmission fluid into proper container. If cleaning oil screen, remove oil pan. Apply an even bead of Liquid Gasket (1217B) when reassembling. Tighten all bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/subaru/impreza-wrx/gdgg-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#at-servicing__torque-specifications) .
  2. Fill transaxle with fluid. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shift gear selector through all positions, ending in Park. Check fluid level with engine idling. Add fluid as necessary. DO NOT overfill.

INHIBITOR SWITCH

Inhibitor switch allows back-up lights to turn on when gear selector lever is in "R" position, and allows starter to operate when in "P" or "N" position. Inhibitor switch supplies input signal for each range and turns on corresponding range light on instrument panel.

Adjustment

Loosen 3 inhibitor switch mounting bolts. Move gear selector lever to "N" position. Insert Stopper Pin (499267300) as vertically as possible into holes in inhibitor switch lever and switch body. (Scheme 2) Tighten mounting bolts and recheck adjustment. Ensure engine will start only with gear selector lever in "P" position, and back-up lights come on in "R" position.

SELECT CABLE

  1. Select the vehicle on the lift.
  2. Disconnect the ground terminal from battery.
  3. Set the lever to "N" position.
  4. Lift-up the vehicle.
  5. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
  6. Remove the heat shield cover. (If equipped)
  7. Loosen the adjusting nut on each side. (Scheme 3)
  8. Turn the adjusting nut "B" until it lightly touches the connector. (Scheme 4)
  9. While preventing the adjusting nut "B" from moving with a wrench, tighten adjusting nut "A". (Scheme 5)
  10. After completion of fitting, make sure that the select lever operates smoothly all across the operating range.
  11. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Removal

Note. The ATF filter is maintenance free. Replace only when there is oil leakage from the joining area to the transmission.

  1. Drain ATF completely. (Scheme 6) NOTE: Tighten ATF drain plug after draining ATF.
  2. Using oil filter wrench, remove ATF filter. (Scheme 7)
  3. Get new ATF filter and apply a thin coat of ATF to the oil seal.

Installation

  1. Install ATF filter. Turn it by hand, being careful not to damage oil seal.
  2. Using oil filter wrench, tighten ATF filter to transmission case. CAUTION: Align oil filter wrench with torque wrench while tightening ATF filter.
  3. Add ATF.
  1. Move select lever to neutral position.
  2. Remove air intake chamber and duct.
  3. Disconnect inhibitor switch connector. (Scheme 8)
  4. Remove center exhaust pipe.
  5. Remove snap pin from range select lever. (Scheme 9)
  6. Remove plate assembly from transmission case. (Scheme 10)
  7. Remove bolts. (Scheme 11)
  8. Move range select lever to parking position (left side). (Scheme 12)
  9. Remove inhibitor switch from transmission. (Scheme 13)

  1. Install inhibitor switch to transmission case. (Scheme 13)
  2. Move range select lever to neutral position.
  3. Using stopper pin, tighten bolts of inhibitor switch. (Scheme 11)
  4. Install select cable to range select lever.
  5. Install plate assembly to transmission. (Scheme 10)
  6. Install snap pin to range select lever. (Scheme 9)
  7. Install center exhaust pipe.
  8. Connect inhibitor switch connector. (Scheme 8)
  9. Install air intake chamber and duct.

Removal & Installation

  1. Clean transmission exterior. NOTE: Tighten ATF drain plug after draining ATF.
  2. Drain ATF completely. (Scheme 6)
  3. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
  4. Remove the heat shield cover.
  5. Remove the propeller shaft. See Refer to REMOVAL, Propeller Shaft.
  6. Using puller assembly, remove the oil seal.
  7. Using installer, install the oil seal.
  8. Install the propeller shaft. See appropriate Refer to REMOVAL, Propeller Shaft.
  9. Install the heat shield cover.
  10. Install the rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
  11. Pour ATF and check the ATF level.
  1. Set the vehicle on the lift.
  2. Disconnect the ground terminal from battery.
  3. Prior to removal, set the lever to "N" position.
  4. Lift-up vehicle. CAUTION: When removing the exhaust pipes, be careful each exhaust pipe does not drop out.
  5. Remove the front and center exhaust pipe. (Non-Turbo Model)
  6. Remove the center exhaust pipe. (Turbo Model)
  7. Remove the heat shield cover. (If equipped)
  8. Remove the snap pin from range select lever. (Scheme 14)
  9. Remove the plate assembly from transmission. (Scheme 15)
  10. Disconnect the cable from select lever and then remove the cable bracket. (Scheme 3)
  11. Remove the select cable from plate assembly.

  1. Install select cable to plate assembly.
  2. Install select cable to range select lever.
  3. Install plate assembly to transmission. (Scheme 15)
  4. Install snap pin to range select lever. (Scheme 14)
  5. Insert the thread portion of the other inner cable and into connector hole of the select lever, and fix the other outer cable end to bracket.
  6. Move the select lever to the "N" position, then adjust the select cable position. See «SELECT CABLE»(/subaru/impreza-wrx/gdgg-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#at-servicing__select-cable) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  7. Install heat shield cover.
  8. Install the front and center exhaust pipe. (Non-Turbo Model)
  9. Install the center exhaust pipe. (Turbo Model)
  1. Clean transmission exterior. NOTE: Tighten ATF drain plug after draining ATF.
  2. Drain ATF completely. (Scheme 6) NOTE: Remove and clean the magnet. Remove the old gasket on the oil pan and transmission case completely.
  3. Remove oil pan.
  4. Disconnect duty solenoids and ATF temperature sensor connectors. Remove connectors from clip and disconnect connectors at 9 places. (Scheme 16) CAUTION: When removing control valve body, be careful not to interfere with transfer duty solenoid wiring.
  5. Remove the control valve. (Scheme 17)

  1. Set the select lever in "N" position.
  2. Install the control valve and ground earth connectors. (Scheme 17)
  3. Connect all connector. (Scheme 16)
  4. Attach the magnet at the specified position. (Scheme 18)
  5. Apply proper amount of liquid gasket to the entire oil pan mating surface. (Scheme 19)
  6. Install the oil pan.
  7. Pour ATF into the oil charge pipe.
  8. Check the level of the ATF.
