INSPECTION
DETECTING CONDITION
- Engine coolant temperature is above 95°C (203°F).
- Vehicle speed is below 19 km/h (12 MPH).
TROUBLE SYMPTOM
- Radiator main and sub fan do not rotate under the above conditions.

Note. Inspection by your Subaru distributor is required, because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts.
Replace the thermostat if the valve does not close completely at an ambient temperature or if the following test shows unsatisfactory results.
Immerse the thermostat and thermometer in water. Raise water temperature gradually, and measure the temperature and valve lift when the valve begins to open and when the valve is fully opened. During the test, agitate the water for even temperature distribution. The measurement should be to the specification.
Starts to open
- 76 - 80°C (169 - 176°F)

- Set the vehicle on a lift.
- Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Remove the under cover.
- Drain the engine coolant completely. Refer to «DRAINING OF ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-200790-S24972536202005102300000) , Engine Coolant.
- Disconnect the connectors of radiator main fan motor (A) and sub fan motor (B).
- Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from water pump.
- Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses from radiator. (AT vehicles) Cap the hose and pipe ends to prevent ATF from leaking.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Disconnect the over flow hose.
- Remove the reservoir tank.
- Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from radiator.
- Remove the radiator upper brackets.
- Detach the power steering hose from clip on radiator.
- Lift the radiator up and away from the vehicle.

- Attach the radiator mounting cushions to holes on the vehicle.
- Install the radiator to vehicle. NOTE: Fit pins on the lower side of radiator into cushions on the body side.
- Install the radiator brackets and tighten bolts. Tightening torque: 18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.0 ft-lb)
- Attach the power steering hose to radiator.
- Connect the radiator inlet hose.
- Install the reservoir tank. Tightening torque: 7.5 N.m (0.76 kgf-m, 5.5 ft-lb)
- Connect the over flow hose.
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Connect the ATF cooler hoses. (AT vehicles)
- Connect the radiator outlet hose.
- Connect the connectors to radiator main fan motor (A) and sub fan motor (B).
- Install the under cover.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the battery ground cable to battery.
- Fill engine coolant. Refer to «FILLING OF ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-200790-S17400688002005102300000) , Engine Coolant.
- Check the ATF level. Refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-200793-S13406383872005102300000) , Automatic Transmission Fluid.

- Remove the radiator cap, top off radiator, and then attach the tester to radiator in place of cap.
- Apply a pressure of 157 kPa (1.6 kg/cm 2 , 23 psi) to the radiator to check if: Engine coolant leaks at/around radiator. Engine coolant leaks at/around hoses or connections. CAUTION: Engine should be off. Wipe engine coolant from check points in advance. Be careful to prevent engine coolant from spurting out when removing the tester. Be careful also not to deform the filler neck of radiator when installing or removing tester.

- Attach the radiator cap to tester.
- Increase the pressure until tester gauge pointer stops. Radiator cap is functioning properly if it holds the service limit pressure for 5 to 6 seconds. Standard pressure: 93 - 123 kPa (0.95 - 1.25 kg/cm 2 , 14 - 18 psi) Service limit pressure: 83 kPa (0.85 kg/cm 2 , 12 psi) CAUTION: Be sure to remove foreign matter and rust from the cap in advance otherwise, results of pressure test will be incorrect.

- Set the vehicle on a lift.
- Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Remove the under cover.
- Drain approx. 1 l (1.0 US qt, 0.9 Imp qt) of engine coolant. Refer to «DRAINING OF ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-200790-S24972536202005102300000) , Engine Coolant.
- Disconnect the connector of main fan motor (A) and sub fan motor (B).
- Remove the ATF hose from clip of radiator fan motor assembly (AT vehicles).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the V-belt cover.
- Disconnect the over flow hose.
- Remove the reservoir tank.
- Remove the radiator fan motor assembly mounting bolts.
- Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from radiator.
- Detach the power steering hose from clip on radiator.
- Rise up the radiator fan motor assembly to remove it from vehicle.

- Install the radiator fan motor assembly to radiator.
- Connect the power steering hose to radiator.
- Connect the radiator inlet hose.
- Install the radiator fan motor assembly mounting bolts. Tightening torque: 4.9 N.m (0.50 kgf-m, 3.6 ft-lb)
- Install the reservoir tank. Tightening torque: 7.5 N.m (0.76 kgf-m, 5.5 ft-lb)
- Install the over-flow hose.
- Install the V-belt cover.
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Install the ATF hose to clip of radiator fan motor assembly (AT vehicles).
- Connect the main fan motor (A) and sub fan motor (B).
- Install the under cover.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the battery ground cable to battery.
- Fill the engine coolant. Refer to «FILLING OF ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-200790-S17400688002005102300000) , Engine Coolant.

- Remove the clip which holds motor connector onto shroud.
- Remove the nut which holds fan itself onto fan motor and shroud assembly.
- Remove the bolts which install fan motor onto shroud.
Make sure the engine coolant level is between full and low.
