ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect a Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the tester ON. Turn the air conditioning switch ON. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the OCV is operated by the Techstream. OK Condition Specified Condition OCV is OFF (-128%) Normal engine speed OCV is ON (0%) Rough idle or engine stalled If the result is not acceptable, cool the engine and perform the inspection again before working the final judgement. Check the engine speed when the OCV is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature is 50°C or lass. HINT: When performing the active test, the air conditioning should be ON. Engine coolant temperature when engine is started should be 30°C or less. OK Condition Specified Condition OCV is OFF (-128%) Normal engine speed OCV is ON (0%) Rough idle or engine stalled

  1. REMOVE NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 1»(ref-388746-S42241558912011031100000)
  2. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Remove the bolt and the wire harness bracket. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector (for exhaust camshaft side). Remove the bolt and remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft side). Remove the O-ring from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft side). Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector (for intake camshaft side). Remove the bolt and remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft side). Remove the O-ring from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft side).

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the below. Standard resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20 °C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. Check the operation. Connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 1 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. OK Condition Specified Condition Battery positive (+) voltage applied Valve moves to the left as shown in the illustration Battery positive (+) voltage cut off Valve moves to the right as shown in the illustration If the result is not as specified, replace the camshaft timing oil control valve. NOTE: If the valve cannot return properly because of foreign matter intrusion, a small amount of leakage in the advanced direction may occur and a DTC may be output.
  1. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle position sensor. Connect a Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the tester ON. Start the engine. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Throttle Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. OK Make sure that the throttle valve is opened when the accelerator pedal is depressed.

  1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 1»(ref-388731-S27227817192011031100000)
  2. REMOVE NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 1»(ref-388746-S42241558912011031100000)
  3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH HOSE Disconnect the wire harness clamp and mass air flow meter connector. Disconnect the No. 2 ventilation hose. Loosen the hose clamp, unlock the 2 clamps and remove air cleaner cap sub-assembly with hose.
  4. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle body connector. Disconnect the water by-pass hose and the No. 2 water by-pass hose. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts and remove the throttle body assembly. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

  1. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body assembly.
  1. INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Connect a Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Accelerator Position No. 1 and Accelerator Position No. 2. While the accelerator pedal is depressed and released, check that the values of accelerator position No. 1 and accelerator position No. 2 are within the specifications. Accelerator Position No. 1 Standard voltage Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal released 0.5 to 1.1 V Accelerator pedal depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V Accelerator Position No. 2 Standard voltage Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal released 1.2 to 2.0 V Accelerator pedal depressed 3.4 to 5.0 V HINT: If the results are not as specified, check the accelerator pedal, wire harness and ECM.

Scheme 22: REMOVAL
  1. REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal connector. Remove the 2 bolts and accelerator pedal. NOTE: Do not drop or strike the accelerator pedal. Do not disassemble the accelerator pedal.

Note. Perform the mass air flow meter inspection in accordance with the procedures below. Only replace the mass air flow meter when foreign matter adheres to the sensor and the MAF value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range.

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Read the values using a Techstream (MAF). NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the mass air flow meter while it is installed into the air cleaner case (installed on the vehicle). During the test, do not use the exhaust air duct to perform suction on the exhaust pipe. Connect a Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON (do not run the engine). Turn the tester ON. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the intelligent tester. Standard Less than 0.19 g/sec If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter. If the result is within the specified range, inspect the mass air flow meter. Refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-388735-S18774352582011031100000) .

  1. REMOVE MASS AIR FLOW METER Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector. Remove the 2 screws and the mass air flow meter.

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Using a work light, check that the platinum filament (heater portion) in the mass air flow meter has no foreign matter attached. OK No foreign matter attached.
