REMOVAL

CAUTIONSome of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column (See PRECAUTION ).

  1. TURN FRONT WHEELS TO FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  3. REMOVE STEERING PAD (See «REMOVAL»(ref-289738-S39598748672008070700000) )
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY (See «REMOVAL»(ref-289767-S21379361372008070700000) )
  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER (for Lower Side) NOTE: Removing the steering column cover in the incorrect order will cause the steering column cover to break. Push the right and left sides of the steering column cove, and disengage the 4 claws. Insert fingers into the opening of the tilt lever of the steering column cover to disengage the claw. HINT: Spread the claw to disengage it. Turn the steering column cover to disengage the 2 claws and remove the steering column cover as shown in the illustration.
  6. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY Disconnect the 2 connectors and remove the wire harness clamp. Remove the 2 screws and remove the ignition switch assembly.

Scheme 53: INSPECTION
  1. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY Check the resistance. Measure the resistance between the terminals. Standard resistance STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition - LOCK 10 kohms or higher 2 (AM1) - 3 (ACC) ACC Below 1 ohms 2 (AM1) - 3 (ACC) - 4 (IG1) 7 (AM2) - 6 (IG2) ON Below 1 ohms 2 (AM1) - 4 (IG1) - 1 (ST1) 7 (AM2) - 6 (IG2) - 8 (ST2) START Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the ignition switch assembly.

  1. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY Install the ignition switch assembly with the 2 screws. Install the wire harness clamp and connect the 2 connectors.
  2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER (for Lower Side) NOTE: If the steering column cover is installed in the incorrect order, it will not be possible to assemble the steering column cover. Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover. Engage the 4 claws. Engage the claw. HINT: Press the area around the claw to engage it.
  3. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-289738-S05459496332008070700000) )
  4. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-289767-S16623782372008070700000) )
  5. INSTALL STEERING PAD (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-289738-S33914018562008070700000) )
  6. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf)
  7. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (See «DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM»(ref-289738-S09321370282008070700000) )
