REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Note. For view of Special Tools referred to throughout the following procedures, see SPECIAL TOOLS .
Removal
- Remove front wheel. Check wheel bearing backlash and deviation (rotational free play). See «WHEEL BEARING INSPECTION»(ref-164981-S39135413842004081900000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
- Unstake lock nut. Hold drive shaft from turning by applying brakes and remove drive shaft lock nut. Remove brake caliper and disc and support caliper out of way. Remove disc.
- Remove ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp. Remove brake hose from shock absorber clamp. Remove nut from front stabilizer bar link assembly.
- Remove cotter pin and nut from tie rod end. Use separator tool to disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle. Using Special Tool (09628-00011), separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle.
- Using a plastic hammer, separate the front drive shaft assembly from the axle hub. Remove 2 nuts and bolts from lower end of shock absorber. Remove steering knuckle and axle hub from vehicle. see scheme 1
- Remove inner snap ring. (Scheme 8)
- Mount assembly in vise. Use slide hammer and attaching plate to remove axle hub. (Scheme 8) Using Special Tool (09950-40011, 09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04030, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09957-04010, 09958-04011, 09950-60010, 09951-00370), remove the inner race of hub bearing from the hub sub-assembly. (Scheme 8) Remove 3 bolts and remove dust cover.
- Place the inner race of hub bearing on the outer race of hub bearing. Using Special Tool (09527-17011, 09950-60010, 09951-00640, 09950-70010, 09951-07100) and a press, remove the hub bearing from the steering knuckle. (Scheme 8)
Installation
- Using Special Tool (09950-60020, 09951-00720, 09950-70010, 09951-07100) and a press, install a new hub bearing to the steering knuckle. (Scheme 8) Install the dust cover with the 3 bolts. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164981-S00735659102004081900000).
- Using Special Tool (09608-32010, 09950-60010, 09951-00600, 09950-70010, 09951-07100) and a press, install the hub sub-assembly. (Scheme 9) Using snap ring pliers, install a NEW hole snap ring.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW cotter pins. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164981-S00735659102004081900000).

- Remove front wheel. Disconnect brake hose and ABS speed sensor clamp from shock absorber. Remove both wiper arms. (Scheme 10)and (Scheme 11). Disengage 8 clips and remove the hood to cowl top seal. Disengage 5 clips and remove the cowl top left side ventilator louver. Disengage 5 clips and remove the cowl top right side ventilator louver. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove 2 bolts. Slide the wiper link assembly to vehicle passenger side. Disengage the meshing of the rubber pin and remove the windshield wiper motor and link assembly. Using a screwdriver, disengage the meshing of 2 rods at the crank arm pivot of the windshield wiper motor assembly. Remove the 2 torx bolts and windshield wiper motor assembly. Remove cowl top panel sub-assembly outer side to reveal top of strut tower.
- Remove 2 lower shock absorber nuts and bolts and disconnect shock absorber from steering knuckle. (Scheme 12) Remove 3 upper shock absorber mounting nuts from inside engine compartment and remove shock absorber with coil spring.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES .
Removal & Installation (Left Side A/T Model)
Note. On the A/T model, the removal and installation of the lower No. 1 right side control arm can be performed without removing the power steering link assembly and front suspension cross member. see scheme 13- see scheme 15.
- Remove front wheels. Remove hood. Attach an engine chain hoist and suspend engine assembly. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article ENGINE MECHANICAL article in ENGINES.
- Using Special Tool, separate both lower ball joints from steering knuckles, (Special Tool 09628-00011). (Scheme 13) While holding the front stabilizer link bolt with the spanner remove the nut. Remove the 2 retainers and cushion, and then remove the front stabilizer bolt. Perform the procedure above on the other side.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the 4 nuts, and separate the power steering link assembly. (Scheme 13) Suspend the power steering link assembly with safety wire. Remove the bolt and separate the pressure feed tube assembly. (Scheme 14)
- Remove the 2 bolts and both front suspension member reinforcement. see scheme 13 Remove the bolt and the 2 nuts and separate front suspension crossmember sub-assembly. (Scheme 14) Support the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly with the jack. Remove the 4 bolts and separate the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly. (Scheme 14)
- Remove the 2 bolts, nut and the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower control arm No. 1. (Scheme 14) Inspect the ball joint. See «BALL JOINT INSPECTION»(ref-164981-S31635164192004081900000).
- Temporarily tighten the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 1 with the 2 bolts and the nut. (Scheme 15) Using Special Tool, align the holes of the suspension member and the body, (Special Tool 09670-00010). Perform the same procedure on the other side. Install the suspension member with the 4 bolts. (Scheme 15) Tighten bolts as specified: Bolt "A" - 52 ft. lbs. (70 N.m) and Bolt "B" - 86 ft. lbs. (116 N.m).
- Install the bolt and the 2 nuts and connect front suspension crossmember sub-assembly. (Scheme 15) Tighten bolt and 2 nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N.m).
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164981-S00735659102004081900000). Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES»(ref-164981-S41588865602004081900000).

Removal & Installation (Left Side M/T Model)
Note. On the M/T model, the removal and installation of the lower No. 1 right side control arm is performed following the same procedures as for the lower No. 1 left side control arm (A/T model). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (LEFT SIDE A/T MODEL) and see scheme 13 - see scheme 15.
- Remove front wheels.
- Using Special Tool, separate ball joint from steering knuckle, (Special Tool 09628-00011). While holding the front stabilizer link bolt with the spanner remove the nut. Remove the 2 retainers and cushion, and then remove the front stabilizer bolt. Perform the procedure above on the other side.
- Remove the 2 bolts, nut and the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower control arm No. 1.
- For installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164981-S00735659102004081900000) . Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES»(ref-164981-S41588865602004081900000) .
- Remove lower No. 1 control arm. See «LOWER NO. 1 CONTROL ARM»(ref-164981-S03559939692004081900000) . Complete lower control arm must be removed and replaced to replace ball joint.
- Check ball joint turning torque. See «BALL JOINT INSPECTION»(ref-164981-S31635164192004081900000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
- For installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164981-S00735659102004081900000) . Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES»(ref-164981-S41588865602004081900000) .
- Remove front suspension crossmember sub-assembly. See removal and installation procedure under «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (LEFT SIDE A/T MODEL)»(ref-164981-S18429071902004081900000).
- Remove the 4 bolts and the 2 bushings front stabilizer bracket No. 1. see scheme 13- see scheme 15. Remove the stabilizer bar front.
- For installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164981-S00735659102004081900000). Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES»(ref-164981-S41588865602004081900000).
