- PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING TECHSTREAM If the engine switch cannot be turned on (IG), it is possible to perform troubleshooting for the smart key system (for Entry Function) using the following method. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and turn any door courtesy light switch on and off by pressing it with your finger until communication between the Techstream and vehicle begins (when communication begins, the Techstream display changes). HINT: Make sure the interval between door courtesy light switch on and off operations is 1.5 seconds or less.
- PRECAUTIONS WHEN REPLACING ECU When replacing the ID code box (immobiliser code ECU), certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly), steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU), ECM or electrical key transmitter, refer to the registration procedures. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(ref-451065-S16272258382012020700000) . When the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) is replaced, the stored steering lock position will no longer match that of the steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU) and it may not be possible to start the engine. Therefore, after replacement, perform the following procedure. Move the shift lever to P (for Automatic Transaxle). With the engine switch off, open and close a door, and then start the engine.
- PRECAUTION FOR REGISTRATION If replacing any of the following parts, refer to the removal procedures. NOTE: Any electrical key transmitters or ECUs for which registration has been performed cannot be reused. ID code box (immobiliser code ECU). - PRECAUTIONS WHEN DISCONNECTING CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery cable, the entry unlock function may not operate. If this occurs, the entry unlock function can be restored by performing a wireless door lock and unlock operation.
- PRECAUTIONS FOR VEHICLE BATTERY AND BATTERY BUILT INTO ELECTRICAL KEY TRANSMITTER When the doors are locked, electric waves are transmitted from the vehicle, which continually uses power from the vehicle battery. Therefore, if the vehicle is left as is for a long time, the battery may be fully depleted. If the vehicle is not used for a long time, disconnect the battery or cancel the smart key system (for Entry Function). HINT: Refer to the following procedures to cancel the smart key system (for Entry Function). Refer to «CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS»(ref-451055-S05571530312012020700000) . When the doors are locked and the electrical key transmitter is in the detection area of an electrical key antenna, periodic communication between the electrical key transmitter and vehicle is performed, which uses battery power. If the vehicle is not being used, do not place the electrical key transmitter within 2 m (6.56 ft.) of the vehicle.
- PRECAUTIONS FOR ELECTRICAL KEY TRANSMITTER HINT: For the shape of the electrical key transmitter, refer to Parts Location. Refer to «PARTS LOCATION»(ref-451055-S28643817582012020700000) . The electrical key transmitter is a precision instrument. Be sure to observe the following: Do not subject the electrical key transmitter to strong physical shocks. Do not keep the electrical key transmitter in a high temperature area for a long time. Do not use an ultrasonic washing machine to clean the electrical key transmitter. Do not use the electrical key transmitter with any magnetic items such as magnetic key holders. Do not place the electrical key transmitter near magnetic equipment, such as digital audio players, induction cookers, medical devices that generate low-frequency electromagnetic waves, etc. Do not attach any stickers to the electrical key transmitter.
- PRECAUTIONS WHEN INSPECTING SMART KEY SYSTEM (for Entry Function) General precautions for the smart key system (for Entry Function): Always carry the electrical key transmitter. Under the following conditions, the key detection area may be reduced or the electrical key transmitter may be unable to be properly detected. This is due to the weak electromagnetic waves used for key detection. The battery is depleted. There are TV towers, electric power plants, broadcasting stations, gas stations or other facilities that generate strong electric waves nearby. Wireless communication devices, such as walkie-talkies, cell phones, cordless telephones, digital audio players, portable game systems, etc., are carried together with the electrical key transmitter. The electrical key transmitter is covered by or in contact with objects made of metal, such as coins, certain types of cards, etc. Film with some metallic content is applied to the rear window glass. Electric wave-type keyless entry systems are being operated nearby. An electrical key transmitter from another vehicle is nearby. The electrical key transmitter is placed near equipment that generates high-voltage or electrical noise. Operating range of the smart key system (for Entry Function): Due to the body shape, there are some areas in which proper system operation is difficult. Even if the electrical key transmitter is in the vehicle exterior key detection area, the electrical key transmitter may not be properly detected if the electrical key transmitter is near a window, a door handle or the center of the bumper. Even if the electrical key transmitter is in the vehicle interior key detection area, the electrical key transmitter may not be properly detected if it is on the instrument panel, in the glove box or on the floor. Depending on the way the electrical key transmitter is held, the electrical key transmitter may not operate properly. As weak electric waves are emitted from the electrical key transmitter, if a pacemaker is being used, be sure to read the pacemaker instruction manual. The smart key system (for Entry Function) will not operate under the following conditions. The procedures to cancel the smart key system (for Entry Function) are performed. There is no transmitter battery (the LED of the electrical key transmitter does not blink when a key switch is pressed).
- PRECAUTIONS FOR ENTRY UNLOCK FUNCTION When performing an entry unlock operation, be sure to touch the backside of the front door outside handle assembly (touch sensor). If the front door outside handle assembly is touched while wearing gloves, etc., the response of the system may be delayed. When performing an entry unlock operation, confirm that the door has unlocked, and then pull the front door outside handle assembly to open the door. If the vehicle is approached quickly or the front door outside handle assembly is operated quickly, the door may not unlock. In this case, the system automatically performs the door unlock operation 4 times. However, if the front door outside handle assembly is being pulled at this time, the door may not unlock for mechanical reasons. If the door does not open when the front door outside handle assembly is pulled once, return the front door outside handle assembly to its original position. Then the door can be unlocked. If the electrical key transmitter is brought too close to the front door outside handle assembly, it may not be possible to unlock the door with the entry unlock function. If the electrical key transmitter is within the vehicle exterior detection area, the door can be unlocked even when a person other than the person carrying the electrical key transmitter holds the front door outside handle assembly. However, doors other than the door for which the matching code is detected cannot be unlocked (If the electrical key transmitter is in the vehicle exterior detection area of the driver side door and the driver side front door outside handle assembly is held, the doors can be unlocked. However, if the front passenger side front door outside handle assembly is held, the doors cannot be unlocked). If a door is not opened after the door unlock operation, the doors automatically lock after approximately 30 seconds. If the electrical key transmitter is within the vehicle exterior detection area and a large amount of water is applied to the front door outside handle assembly, such as by a car wash or heavy rain, the sensor may react and the entry unlock operation may be performed. However, the doors will automatically lock after approximately 30 seconds if a door is not opened. If the electrical key transmitter is being carried together with an electrical key transmitter from another vehicle with a smart key system (for Entry Function) and the front door outside handle assembly is held, the time before the door is unlocked by the entry unlock operation may be more than normal.
- PRECAUTIONS FOR ENTRY LOCK FUNCTION When performing an entry lock operation, if the lock sensor on the front door outside handle assembly is touched too quickly, the door may not lock. If the electrical key transmitter is brought near the vehicle interior (window, front door outside handle assembly), the entry lock function may not operate. Also, the key reminder warning buzzer may sound and the entry unlock operation may stop functioning. In this case, move the electrical key transmitter away from the vehicle interior (window, front door outside handle assembly), perform the entry lock operation, and then perform the entry unlock operation. If the electrical key transmitter is being carried and a lock operation is performed from the driver side door while the driver side door is open (the door is ajar), the door ajar warning does not operate. If the electrical key transmitter is left on the instrument panel, in the glove box or on the floor, the key reminder warning function may not operate and the electrical key transmitter may be locked in the vehicle when a door lock operation is performed. Always carry the electrical key transmitter. The entry unlock operation cannot be performed for approximately 3 seconds after an operation that locks the doors, such as an entry lock or wireless lock operation, is performed.

- VEHICLE BATTERY SAVING FUNCTION When the smart key system (for Entry Function) is operating, the vehicle performs key detection operations every 0.25 seconds. Therefore, if the vehicle is left as is for a long period of time, the battery may become fully depleted. The following functions help reduce the rate at which the battery is depleted. If the engine is not started for 6 days or more, periodic signal transmission from the electrical key antennas stops. However, the doors can still be unlocked by touching the unlock sensor of a front door outside handle assembly. If the engine is not started for 15 days or more, the lock and unlock sensors of the front door outside handle assembly RH are disabled. Therefore, only the unlock sensor of the front door outside handle assembly LH can be used to unlock the doors. If 10 minutes or more elapse while the electrical key transmitter is in the detection area (including the vehicle interior), smart key system (for Entry Function) control stops operating. To restore operation of the smart key system (for Entry Function), perform any of the following operations. While carrying the electrical key transmitter, touch the lock and unlock sensor of the front door outside handle assembly LH and perform a door lock or unlock operation. Lock or unlock the doors with the wireless operation. Insert the mechanical key into the door key cylinder of the driver side door and lock or unlock the doors.

- SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS FOR SMART KEY SYSTEM This lists a sequence of actions pertaining to the smart key system (unlocking the doors, turning the power source mode to on (ACC) and on (IG), starting and stopping the engine, and locking the doors). The system can be inspected easily by confirming that the operations listed for each step occur. The following example shows how the information in this section is organized. The "Action" item indicates actions the user performs related to the smart key system, and the "Expected Vehicle Response" item indicates the normal vehicle behavior in response to those actions. The suspected problem areas when the vehicle does not behave as expected and troubleshooting hints for each area are listed under "Suspected Area when Expected Vehicle Response Fails and Troubleshooting Information". NOTE: When the engine switch cannot be turned on (IG), try to establish communication between the vehicle and the Techstream by using either of the following methods: 1) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less until communication between the Techstream and vehicle begins (the Techstream screen changes when communication begins), or 2) connect the Techstream to the vehicle and select "Manual" from the initial screen on the Techstream, and then select "Key Code Registration" under model code. If the smart key system functions have been canceled through the customize function due to a customer request, "Auto Entry Cancel SW" in the Data List displays "ON". ACTION 1 Action All the doors are locked while the key is carried and the user brings the key 3 m (9.84 ft.) or more away from the vehicle. HINT: The request signal is emitted from each door every 0.25 seconds at 134.2 kHz to form a key detection area of approximately 0.7 m (2.30 ft.). Reference Waveform or Table Pulse generation*. Expected Vehicle Response The red LED of the electrical key transmitter starts blinking. HINT: When the electrical key transmitter is detected and the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) confirms that the key ID code of the electrical key transmitter and the key ID code stored in the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) match, it puts the touch sensor of the front door outside handle assembly in standby mode (the mode in which detection is possible when the sensor is touched by hand) and allows the door to be unlocked. Suspected Area when Expected Vehicle Response Fails and Troubleshooting Information If the LED of the electrical key transmitter does not blink, the following parts may be malfunctioning. ELECTRICAL KEY TRANSMITTER The electrical key transmitter is not a key which is registered to the vehicle. Confirm that the system operates normally with another electrical key transmitter that the customer possesses. If the electrical key transmitter is malfunctioning, the power source mode cannot be changed to on (ACC) and the engine cannot be started (under normal conditions, when the key is brought into the vehicle and the engine switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal*1 or clutch pedal*2, the power source mode changes to on (ACC) and the indicator illuminates in orange). *1: for Automatic Transaxle *2: for Manual Transaxle If the door cannot be opened, use the mechanical key built into the electrical key transmitter. HINT: Before replacing the electrical key transmitter, check if the transmitter battery is depleted. ELECTRIC WAVE INTERFERENCE If a problem only occurs in a certain area or at a certain time, electric wave interference may be the problem. When the lock or unlock switch of the electrical key transmitter is pressed, a signal strength meter will detect signals in the RF band (between 300 to 400 MHz). If signals are detected in the LF or RF band even after moving away from the vehicle, wave interference may be present. If there are problems with the signals sent from the key due to an electrical key transmitter malfunction (including when a key from another vehicle is used), transmitter battery depletion, or wave interference, one of the following Data List items may display "Yes": "Unmatched Vehicle-ID" "No Response" "Unmatched Code or Form" "ID Code Difference" CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) - DOOR OUTSIDE HANDLE The vehicle exterior detection area cannot be formed properly. If the key LED does not blink when within 0.7 m (2.30 ft.) of the front door outside handle assembly LH, but does blink when within 0.7 m (2.30 ft.) of the front door outside handle assembly RH, the front door outside handle assembly LH is malfunctioning. When there are problems with the vehicle exterior detection area, the power source mode can still be changed to on (ACC) and the engine can still be started. Using the Techstream, proper formation of the vehicle exterior detection area can be confirmed using "Overhead + Driver Side" in key diagnostic mode. Even if there are problems with the detection area, door unlock operations can be performed by pressing the wireless unlock switch on the electrical key transmitter. DOOR CONTROL RECEIVER When the door control receiver fails, the passenger side door cannot be unlocked. When the door control receiver fails, wireless door unlock operations cannot be performed. When the door control receiver fails, the power source mode cannot be changed to on (ACC) and the engine cannot be started. Suspected Area when Expected Vehicle Response Fails and Troubleshooting Information When the doors do not unlock even though the unlock sensor is touched, the following parts may be malfunctioning. The same part as when the key LED does not blink is malfunctioning. DOOR OUTSIDE HANDLE UNLOCK SENSOR If the doors unlock when the passenger side door unlock sensor is touched while the electrical key transmitter is carried, the driver side door unlock sensor may be malfunctioning. Under normal conditions, "D-Door Touch Sensor" in the Data List displays "ON" when the unlock sensor is touched. DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK MECHANISM When a lock/unlock operation cannot be performed by operating the door control switch inside the vehicle, the door lock mechanism itself may be malfunctioning. When the ID code from the electrical key transmitter and the ID code stored in the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) match, the ACC relay turns "ON" when the engine switch is pressed, and the engine switch indicator illuminates in orange. After the power source mode changes, S code verification*1 and L code verification*2 are completed, and then the steering wheel is unlocked. The electrical key transmitter, transmitter battery and vehicle battery are possible causes. However, they have already been confirmed using the previous procedures. CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) - ELECTRIC WAVE INTERFERENCE If a problem only occurs in a certain area or at a certain time, electric wave interference may be the problem. PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH (for Automatic Transaxle) Under normal conditions, "Neutral SW/Clutch SW" in the Data List displays "ON" when the shift lever is moved to P. ID CODE BOX (IMMOBILISER CODE ECU) It is necessary for "S Code Check" in the Data List to display "OK". - CUSTOMIZE SMART KEY SYSTEM (for Entry Function) HINT: The following items can be customized. Close and open the driver side door within 30 seconds of completing the step above (driver side door: open at beginning of step --> closed --> opened). Close the driver side door within 5 seconds of completing the above step. Perform the following procedure to restore the smart key system (for Entry Function) to the active state from the canceled state.
