- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove coolant recovery bottle cap. Drain coolant. (Scheme 2) Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect wiring harness from engine and transaxle. Secure wiring harness to underhood junction block. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose.
- Disconnect ground wires from 2 studs at top of transaxle. Disconnect accelerator cable. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-1450-S39821245792000031300000). Disconnect fuel lines and secure to brake booster. Disconnect upper radiator hose. Remove A/C compressor (leave hoses connected and brackets on engine; secure A/C compressor to the front cross brace).
- On A/T models, disconnect transaxle cooler lines. Plug openings. On M/T models, remove clutch slave cylinder from transaxle (remove 2 nuts, then rotate cylinder 1/4 turn counterclockwise to release it). Secure slave cylinder and lines to battery tray. On all models, disconnect shift cable from transaxle. Secure radiator, condenser and cooling fan assembly to front cross brace.
- To remove cradle, raise and support vehicle on a hoist. Remove front wheels. Remove splash shields. Remove front brake calipers (leave brake hoses connected; tie calipers to strut springs). Separate front struts from steering knuckles (each side secured by 2 bolts) to allow knuckle and hub assemblies to remain with engine cradle. Leave stabilizer bar attached to cradle and lower control arms.
- Disconnect lower radiator hose, heater inlet and heater return hoses from engine. Remove pinch bolt securing steering shaft to steering rack. Disconnect power steering pressure switch connector at steering gear.
- Remove front exhaust pipe. On A/T models, remove flexplate cover. Remove torque converter bolts. On all models, disengage brakeline from cradle. Put a block of wood (1" x 1" x 2") between cradle and engine torque strut at bottom front end of engine. (Scheme 3)
- Remove mount from upper front end of engine, allowing engine to rest on wood block. Position the engine dolly under the cradle. Use 2 pieces of wood (2" x 4" x 36") to support cradle on an engine dolly. (Scheme 4) Remove 2 nuts securing torque strut brackets to cradle. Remove 4 cradle bolts. Lower engine cradle assembly from vehicle.
- Remove spark plug wires. Remove power steering pump and pump bracket, and secure it to cradle in an upright position. Attach engine hoist. Put a block of wood (1/2" x 1" x 3") between axle shaft and cradle. Remove intake manifold support brace (DOHC). Separate axle shaft support bracket from right side of cylinder block. Put a block of wood under transaxle case to support transaxle during engine separation.
- Remove front engine mount. Remove 4 bolts securing engine to transaxle. Separate engine from transaxle. Lift engine from cradle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-1450-S40274644912000031300000) table.
