Diagnostic Starting Point - Object Detection

Begin the system diagnosis by reviewing the system Description and Operation. Refer to Object Detection Description and Operation . Reviewing the Description and Operation information will help you determine the correct symptom diagnostic procedure when a malfunction exists. Reviewing the Description and Operation information will also help you determine if the condition described by the customer is normal operation. Refer to Symptoms - Object Detection in order to identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Conditions for Running the DTC

  1. Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
  2. The vehicle is in REVERSE

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of the appropriate rear object sensor.
  2. Ignition OFF for 30 seconds, test for less than 5.0 ohms between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the object alarm module.
  3. Ignition ON, transmission in REVERSE, test for 8.0-9.0 volts between the rear object sensor supply voltage circuit terminal 1 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the supply voltage circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the object alarm module. If less than the specified range, test the supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the object alarm module.
  4. Ignition OFF, connect the appropriate rear object sensor and disconnect X1 harness connector at the object alarm module.
  5. Ignition ON, test for less than 1.0V between signal circuit and ground of the appropriate rear object sensor listed below: LR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 3 LR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 5 RR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 2 RR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 1 If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
  6. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between signal circuit and ground of the appropriate rear object sensor listed below: LR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 3 LR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 5 RR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 2 RR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 1 If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
  7. Test for less than 2 ohms between the sensor signal circuit terminal 3 and signal circuit of the appropriate rear object sensor listed below: LR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 3 LR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 5 RR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 2 RR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 1 If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the appropriate rear object alarm sensor and verify that the DTC does not reset. If the DTC resets, replace object alarm module.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The following condition must exist for 300 milliseconds

The object alarm module detects that one of the three indicator control circuits for the RPA display is open or short to ground.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

  1. The object alarm module sets a DTC.
  2. The object alarm module commands ON the information center telltale red indicator and disable the object detection system.
  3. The object alarm module will send a serial data communication message to the instrument panel (I/P) to scroll SERVICE PARK ASSIST message on the driver information center (DIC), and the chime will sound.
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the RPA display.
  2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the 12V voltage supply circuit terminal A and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the voltage supply circuit terminal for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit and the 12V voltage supply circuit terminal A of the appropriate LED listed below: Left amber LED control circuit terminal B Center amber LED control circuit terminal C Red LED control circuit terminal D
  4. Command the appropriate LED ON and OFF with a scan tool, verify that a test lamp turns ON and OFF when switching between commanded states. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the object alarm module. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the object alarm module.
  5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the RPA display.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the RPA display.
  2. Connect a 10A fused jumper wire between 12V voltage supply circuit terminal A and B+.
  3. Connect a 10A fused jumper wire between control circuit terminal and ground of the appropriate LED listed below: Left amber LED control circuit terminal B Center amber LED control circuit terminal C Red LED control circuit terminal D
  4. Verify that the appropriate LED illuminates. If the component does not perform as specified, replace the RPA display.

The object alarm module is not programmed.

  1. The object alarm module commands red LED ON.
  2. The object alarm module will send a serial data communication message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to display SERVICE PARK ASSIST message on the driver information center (DIC) and the chime sounds.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

  1. The DTC becomes history when the conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present.
  2. The history DTC clears after 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles.

  2. The object alarm module commands red LED ON.
  3. The object alarm module sends a serial data message to the instrument panel Cluster (IPC) to display SERVICE PARK ASSIST message on the driver information center (DIC), and the chime will sound.
  1. The DTC becomes history when the conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present. The VIN that is stored in the object alarm module matches the VIN stored in the BCM.
  2. The history DTC clears after 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles.

  2. The object alarm module commands ON the information center telltale red indicator.
  3. The object alarm module will send a serial data communication message to the instrument panel (I/P) to scroll SERVICE PARK ASSIST message on the driver information center (DIC), and the chime will sound.
  1. The DTC becomes history when the conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present.
  2. A history DTC will clear after 100 consecutive ignition cycles, if the condition for the malfunction is no longer present.
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect harness connectors at all rear object sensors.
  2. Ignition ON, transmission in REVERSE, test for 8.0 V - 9.0 V between object sensor supply voltage circuit terminal 1 and ground. If less than the specified range, test the supply voltage circuit for a short to ground. If all circuits test normal, replace the object alarm module. IMPORTANT: A short to voltage on the component signal circuit may cause this DTC to set. If greater than the specified range, test the supply voltage circuit for a short to voltage. If all circuits test normal, replace the object alarm module.
  3. Connect each rear object sensor one at a time, while monitoring Sensor Feed Voltage Output scan tool parameter. The parameter value should be greater than 8.0 V. If less than the specified value after an individual object sensor is connected, test or replace that object sensor.

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Refer to «Checking Aftermarket Accessories»(ref-301170-S32217293102008101700000) .
  2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
  3. Make sure the rear parking assist sensors located on the vehicle rear bumper are clear. Remove any snow, mud or ice that is blocking the sensors.

Diagnostic Aids

A poor video image can be caused by ice, snow, and mud buildup on the lens of the rear view camera. Also, extreme lighting conditions can affect performance, such as operating in the dark or with bright sunlight shining on the camera. Extreme high or low temperatures can also affect the image quality. For normal operating characteristics of the rear vision camera system, refer to the Navigation System section of the owners manual.
