Diagnostic Starting Point - Engine Cooling

Begin the system diagnosis with the diagnostic system check. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle in Vehicle DTC Information. The Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle will provide the following information

  1. The identification of the control modules which command the system
  2. The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuits
  3. The identification of any stored DTCs and their status

The use of the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Circuit Description

The coolant temperature telltale on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) has the ability to illuminate as a result of an engine over temperature condition. The engine control module (ECM) will send a message to the IPC over the class 2 link to turn the coolant temperature telltale ON if the engine coolant temperature (ECT) exceeds the temperature calibration value listed under Conditions for Setting the DTC.

DTC Descriptors

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

P0217 Engine Coolant Overtemperature

Conditions for Running the DTC

The ignition is ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

  1. The ECT is greater than 118°C (244°F).
  2. No other ECT sensor DTCs have been set.
  3. The ECM will command the A/C relay OFF if the temperature of the engine coolant is greater than 118°C (244°F).

DTC P0217 diagnostic runs continuously once the above conditions have been met.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

  1. The ECM will turn the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) OFF after 3 consecutive trips that the diagnostic has been run and passed.
  2. The history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a malfunction.
  3. The DTC can be cleared by using the scan tool.

DTC P0217

Battery positive voltage is supplied to the cooling fan relay through the 30 A cooling fan fuse located in the underhood fuse block. The engine control module (ECM) controls the cooling fan relay by grounding the cooling fan relay control circuit through an internal solid state device called a driver. The primary function of the driver is to supply the ground for the component being controlled. Each driver has a fault line which is monitored by the ECM. When the ECM is commanding a component ON, the voltage potential of the control circuit should be low, near 0 volts. When the ECM is commanding the control circuit to a component OFF, the voltage potential of the circuit should be high, near battery voltage. If the fault detection circuit senses a voltage other than what is expected, the DTC will set.

The ECM will monitor the control circuit for the following conditions

  1. A short to ground
  2. A short to voltage
  3. An open circuit
  4. An open relay coil
  5. An internally shorted or excessively low resistance relay coil.

When the ECM detects any of the above conditions, the DTC will set and the affected driver will be disabled.

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs

  1. P0480 is for the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit.
  2. P0481 is for the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit.
  3. P0691 Is for the cooling fan relay control circuit.
  1. The ignition is ON.
  2. The battery voltage is more than 9 volts.
  1. The ECM detects an open, a short to ground, or a short to voltage on the cooling fan relay control circuit.
  2. The condition must be present for a minimum of 6 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

  1. The ECM will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed.
  2. The ECM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame and Failure Records data.
  1. The ECM will turn OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic has been run and passed.
  2. The History DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a malfunction.
  3. The DTC can be cleared by using the scan tool.
  1. If the condition is not present, refer to «Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections»(ref-196941-S32978396082005101000000) in Wiring Systems.
  2. Review the Freeze Frame/Failure Records vehicle mileage since the diagnostic test last failed. This may help determine how often the condition that caused the DTC to be set occurs.

The powertrain control module (PCM) controls the low speed cooling fan operation by grounding the cool fan 1 relay control circuit with an internal solid state device called a driver. For high speed cooling fan operation, the PCM grounds the cool fan 2 and S/P relay control circuit at the same time the cool fan 1 control circuit is grounded. Battery positive voltage is supplied to the cool fan 1, cool fan 2 and S/P fan relays. When the PCM is commanding a fan relay ON, the voltage of the control circuit should be low, near 0 volts. When the PCM is commanding a fan relay OFF, the voltage potential of the control circuit should be high, near battery voltage. If the fault detection circuit senses a voltage other than what is expected, the DTC will set.

If the PCM detects an improper voltage level on the cool fan 1 or cool fan 2 speed driver circuits, then code P0480, P0481 or P0691 will set and the effected driver will be disabled.

  2. System voltage is between 9-18 volts.
  3. The relay control circuit is transitioned from OFF to ON or ON to OFF.
  1. The PCM detects an open, a short to ground, or a short to voltage on the cooling fan relay control circuit.
  2. The above conditions are present for at least 30 seconds.
  1. The PCM will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed.
  2. The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame and Failure Records data.
  1. The PCM will turn OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic has been run and passed.

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the Cooling System. Refer to «Checking Aftermarket Accessories»(ref-196941-S26961180052005101000000) in Wiring Systems.
