Circuit/System Description
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the SGCM coolant pump control circuit for an open wire or a over current condition.
The internal fault detection is handled inside the starter/generator control module (SGCM). No external circuits are involved.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the performance of the motor generator temperature sensor to detect if it is within range of the other temperature sensors, by comparing it to other temperature sensors it controls.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors to detect if the motor generator temperature sensor is shorted to ground, shorted to voltage or open.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the motor generator unit (MGU) temperature sensor for an overtemperature condition.
The motor generator unit (MGU) position sensor is used for determining motor control of the MGU. The motor control consists of the angular position and speed of the MGU. The rotor is bolted on the MGU shaft, the stator is bolted on the MGU bracket and the sensor circuit is soldered on the motor control board in the starter/generator control module (SGCM). The SGCM monitors the position sensor circuit to detect a converter error (loss of speed signal or tracking).
The motor generator unit (MGU) monitors to detect a fault in the angle data read by the motor generator position sensor circuit.
The motor generator unit (MGU) position sensor is used for determining motor control of the MGU. The motor control consists of the angular position and speed of the MGU. The rotor is bolted on the MGU shaft, the stator is bolted on the MGU bracket and the sensor circuit is soldered on the motor control board in the starter/generator control module (SGCM). The SGCM monitors the position sensor circuit to detect an overspeed condition.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) temperature sensor is used for system overheat protection. The SGCM monitors the board temperature sensor for an overtemperature condition.
The auxiliary power module (APM) current sensor is used for over current limitation (less than 150 A). The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the current sensor to detect the failure of the APM current sensor circuit (performance monitor).
The auxiliary power module (APM) current sensor is used for over current limitation (less than 150A). The current sensor is soldered on the control board, near the APM 12-volt bus bar. The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the current sensor for the following
- To detect the failure of the APM current sensor circuit (high)
- To detect the failure of the APM current sensor circuit (low)
If one of the above conditions is detected, the SGCM will set the appropriate DTC.
The auxiliary power module (APM) 12-volt output voltage is used for a 12-volt line APM output voltage control and a 12-volt line voltage sensor rationality check.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the drive belt connection between the engine and the motor generator unit (MGU). If belt slip is detected, the DTC will set.
The auxiliary power module (APM) temperature sensor is used for overheat protection. The thermistor is located on the control board, near the phase APM power MOSFET. The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the board temperature sensor for an APM overtemperature condition.
The starter generator control module (SGCM) monitors the hybrid battery voltage to verify that the output voltage (36 volts) Is within normal operating value (above 22 volts). If the output voltage is not within this value, this DTC will set.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors connector X2 terminals 15 and 16. When the connector is disconnected, the SGCM capacitors are electrically connected to a discharge resistor.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the internal torque value and compares it to the motor generator unit (MGU) delivered torque value. If the delivered torque is not within tolerance, the DTC will set.

The AutoStop ready indication will be a DIC message that indicates the following two states
- AUTOSTOP AVAL (AutoStop Available)
- AUTOSTOP UNAVAIL (AutoStop Unavailable)
The engine control module (ECM) will send an AutoStop state message to the body control module (BCM). The BCM will transmit the AutoStop state message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC). If all of the following conditions are true the indicated state will be Avail, otherwise the state will be Unavail
- Vehicle speed of 4 mph exceeded (initially)
- Ambient temperature above -15°C (5°F)
- Hybrid and powertrain components temperatures in hybrid operational ranges Hybrid battery temperature is greater than 10°C (50°F) (approximate) and less than 50°C (122°F). Transmission sump temperature is greater than 25°C (77°F) and less than 110°C (230°F). Engine coolant is greater than 60°C (140°F) and less than 121°C (250°F) (approximate for ambients above 12°C (54°F). Engine coolant is greater than 82°C (180°F) and less than 121°C (250°F) (approximate for ambients above 12°C (54°F).
- Vehicle in Drive (No autostops in I, L or Reverse)
- HVAC compressor system request Engine ON = False
- Grade less than 18 percent
- Sufficient brake vacuum
- SOC is greater than required for AutoStop (70 percent).
- Battery discharge power capability is greater than minimum required for AutoStart (6200 watts).
- Acceptable 12 volt battery status (voltage, current, temperature)
- No wheel slip (ABS or Traction Control) active
- EVPR not running small leak test
- Hood is closed.
- Default action 1, 2, 3, or 4 not active
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the performance to detect 12-volt DC wire electrical failure by comparing the 12-volt input to the 12-volt output values. If the difference is greater than 5 volts, the DTC sets.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the temperature sensor to determine if the sensor is reading correctly, by comparing it to average of 3 other sensors after 480 minute soak.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the temperature sensor circuit to detect shorted low or high failure.
The auxiliary power module (APM) 12-volt output voltage is used for a 12-volt line APM output voltage control and a 12-volt line voltage sensor rationality check. The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the voltage sensor for the following
- To detect the failure of the APM 12-volt voltage sensor circuit below valid range.
- To detect the failure of the APM 12-volt voltage sensor circuit above valid range.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the 14-volt power module current sensor for an overcurrent condition to protect the MOSFET. In the hardware an overcurrent protection circuit is used to limit the current, and software monitors for an overcurrent reading in the sensor.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors to detect the failure of the auxiliary power module (APM) temperature sensor circuit by taking the average of the 2 power inverter module (PIM) sensors and subtracting the module temperature and looking for a difference.
The auxiliary power module (APM) temperature sensor is used for overheat protection. The thermistor is located on the control board, near the phase APM power MOSFET. The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the APM temperature sensor for the following
- To detect if the APM temperature sensor is shorted low.
- To detect if the APM temperature sensor is shorted high.
If one of the above conditions is detected, the SGCM will set the appropriate DTC.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors auxiliary power module (APM) On/Off, DC - DC direction is commanded On but converter is Off to check the status of the 14 volt power module. The SGCM also monitors to detect the APM on when it is not commanded On causing a large current output. If a fault is detected, the appropriate DTC will set.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors to detect auxiliary power module (APM) fault when the APM is commanded in the normal charge mode causing an over current condition. If a fault is detected, the appropriate DTC will set.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the hybrid battery voltage sense circuit low and circuit high to detect the failure of the 36-volt output voltage sensor circuit below or above a valid range.
The power inverter module (PIM) temperature 1 sensor is used for overheat protection. The thermistor is located on the control board, near the phase W power MOSFET. The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the inverter temperature sensor to detect the failure of the inverter temperature sensor circuit using rationality of other temperature sensors to determine if it is out of range.
The power inverter module (PIM) temperature 1 and 2 sensors are used for overheat protection. The thermistors are located on the control board, near the phase U or V power MOSFET. The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the inverter temperature sensor for the following
- To detect if the inverter phase U or V temperature sensor is shorted low.
- To detect if the inverter phase U or V temperature sensor is shorted high.
If one of the above conditions is detected, the SGCM will set the appropriate DTC.
The power inverter module (PIM) temperature 1/2 sensor is used for overheat protection. The thermistor is located on the control board, near the phase U/V power MOSFET. The SGCM monitors the inverter temperature sensor for the following
- To detect if the inverter phase U/V temperature sensor is shorted low.
- To detect if the inverter phase U/V temperature sensor is shorted high.
If one of the above conditions is detected, the MGU will set the appropriate DTC.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the motor generator unit (MGU) field coil circuit to see if the field coil current is within tolerance. If a fault is detected, the DTC will set.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) monitors the motor generator unit (MGU) field coil circuit to see if the field coil current is within tolerance. If a fault is detected, the appropriate DTC will set.
The starter/generator control module (SGCM) phase U/V/W current sensor is used for motor control and power inverter module (PIM) current sensor rationality check. The current sensor is soldered on the control board near the phase U/V/W bus bar. The SGCM monitors the current sensor for the following

The starter/generator control module (SGCM) phase U/V/W current sensors are used for motor control and power inverter module (PIM) current sensor rationality check. The SGCM monitors the current sensor for the following
- To detect a failure of the U/V/W-phase current sensor circuit below valid range
- To detect a failure of the U/V/W-phase current sensor circuit above valid range
If one of the above conditions is detected, the SGCM will set the appropriate DTC.
