Torque Converter Diagnosis

The torque converter clutch (TCC) is applied by fluid pressure, which is controlled by the pressure control solenoid valve. The pressure control solenoid valve is located inside of the automatic transmission assembly. The pressure control solenoid valve is controlled through a combination of computer controlled switches and sensors.

Torque Converter Stator

The torque converter stator roller clutch can have 2 different malfunctions.

  1. The stator assembly freewheels in both directions.
  2. The stator assembly remains locked up at all times.

Torque Converter Clutch Shudder

The key to diagnosing torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder is to note when it happens and under what conditions.

TCC shudder which is caused by the transmission should only occur during the apply or the release of the converter clutch. Shudder should never occur after the TCC plate is fully applied.

Torque Converter Clutch Stuck On or Off

Torque Converter Housing Removal

  1. Remove the 15 torque converter housing bolts (801, 802, 813).
  2. Remove the torque converter housing (10) with a plastic hammer.
  3. Remove the 2 fluid passage seals (89) and 1 fluid passage seal (85).

Torque Converter Housing Installation

  1. Install the NEW 2 transmission fluid passage seals (89) and 1 transmission fluid passage seal (85).
  2. Remove any gasket material and be careful that no oil is on the contacting surfaces of the torque converter housing (10).
  3. Apply a 3 mm (1/8 in) bead of sealant GM P/N 89020326 (Canadian P/N 89021188) to the torque converter housing as shown.
  4. Install the torque converter housing (10).
  5. Install thread locker GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) on the torque converter bolts (801, 802, 813).
  6. Install the 15 torque converter bolts (801, 802, 813). Tighten: Tighten bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
