Vehicle Direction Camera Control Module

If the vehicle is driving, the camera observes the road borders inside its field of view. The camera is able to see the scene inside it's field of view, which is 40° horizontal and 26° vertical. The camera is designed in a kind, that it can see traffic signs up to a distance of 10 m (33 ft) in front of the vehicle. It can also see traffic signs up to a horizontal distance of 8.5 m (28 ft) and a height of 6 m (20 ft). Traffic signs which are not in the field of view can not be detected.

Inside the field of view the camera constantly searches for traffic signs. If the camera detects a traffic sign, it will permanently check the quality of the detection, when the traffic sign is coming closer. The position of the traffic sign is calculated and computed with other information like vehicle speed, lane information and other seen traffic signs. By this the camera is able to estimate, whether the seen traffic sign is a valid one. If the traffic sign is a valid one, it will be reported to the driver in the moment when it leaves the field of view, i.e. 10 m (33 ft) in front of the car.

Instrument Panel Cluster

The control unit for camera monitoring of vehicle direction sends messages to the instrument group via the CAN bus. For this reason the traffic signs are shown in the driver information center. On the page TRAFFIC SIGN DETECTION the last recognized traffic sign will be displayed. Speed limits and no passing signs are displayed as popup on each page of the driver information center menu.

The camera detects visual queues such as lane markings. When it is determined that the vehicle has unintentionally moved outside of the lane, a visual and audible warning is given to the driver. The vehicle direction camera control module receives an input from the lane departure warning switch and controls the lane departure warning LED output. The vehicle direction camera control module also communicates via serial data with the instrument cluster and radio to request visual and audible alerts.

Lane departure warning switch

The lane departure warning switch provides an input to the vehicle direction camera control module to turn the lane departure warning system ON and OFF. The lane departure warning switch is part of the multifunction switch at the instrument panel. The vehicle direction camera control module provides a signal voltage to the normally open momentary switch. When the switch is pressed, the signal circuit is pulled to ground, indicating to the vehicle direction camera control module that the system has been request to turn ON or OFF. The lane departure warning switch also contains the lane departure warning LED, which is controlled by the vehicle direction camera control module to indicate the ON and OFF status of the lane departure warning system. When the system is has been enabled by the lane departure warning switch, the vehicle direction camera control module applies ground to the switch indicator and illuminating the LED.

The instrument cluster contains the green and amber land departure warning indicators. These indicate to the driver the current status of the lane departure warning system and are controlled via serial data by the vehicle direction camera control module. When the system has detected the required lane markings and is ready to assist, the green indicator will be illuminated on the instrument cluster. If the vehicle has unintentionally left the lane, the amber indicator will flash.
