Brief Description
The seat-belt system comprises two safety belts in the front and three in the back. All the belts are of three-point type.
A supplement to the seat-belt system is the Airbag (SRS) system. The system comprises airbags and belt tensioners for the front seat belts. The belt tensioner tensions the seat belt strap in the event of a collision, reducing the forward motion of the body.

Scheme 1
The front seat belts are of the three-point type and are designed to be operated by one hand. Each belt consists of an inertia reel with belt pretensioner activated by an explosive charge, mechanical sensor, strap guide, buckle, belt tongue and end cover.
For the driver and front-seat passenger, there is a seat belt warning which ensures that the belts are fastened.
The inertia reel is mounted in the upper part of the B-pillar. It has a locking system which prevents further extension of the belt when locked. The locking system is controlled by two independent activation systems, one of which is sensitive to vehicle retardation and the other to a certain degree of belt acceleration.
The belt has automatic height adjustment which ensures that the belt sits correctly irrespective of the person's height.
The lap strap anchorage and buckle lock are located in the seat frame. This means that the buckle is always in the same position relative to the longitudinal position of the seat, irrespective of the seat setting. The lock has a double locking function, which means that in its locked position, the catch is blocked by a spindle. The spindle is released with the ordinary release button.

The front seat belts are fitted with belt tensioners. The belt tensioners tighten the front seat belts in the event of an accident, which reduces the forward movement of the body.

The front and rear passenger seat belts on cars for the US and CA markets are fitted with a belt tongue lock.
When using a child seat, the red catch on the side of the belt tongue should be moved to the "CHILD SEAT" position. In this position, the belt can be tightened over the child seat and the strap locked in a taut position.

The rear seat belts are of the three-point type in all three seats. The two inertia reels for the side seats are mounted in the C-pillar and the centre inertia reel is mounted on the parcel shelf.

The inertia reels for the side seats are fitted with automatic height adjustment to ensure comfort irrespective of the passenger's height.
In the 5-door version there are belt holders on the C pillars. The belt should be fastened in these when the backrest is tipped forward. This is to prevent damage to the belt when the backrest is raised to the upright position.

The seat belt warning checks that the driver and front-seat passenger have fastened their seat belts.
The passenger seat has a sensor that detects when the seat is occupied/loaded. Each buckle has a contact connected with TWICE. If the belt is not fastened, TWICE sends a warning, which is indicated in the following way
- belt warning light "FASTEN BELTS"
- acoustic signal (SID).
The belt warning light is turned on each time the ignition is turned ON and stays alight until the seat belt is fastened.
Description of operation
The belt warning light is turned on when the ignition is ON (+15 and +54 circuits) and when the driver's or front-seat passenger's seat belt is not fastened.
The belt contact (70D/70P) is closed when the seat belt is not fastened, and open when it is.
The front passenger seat cushion contains a sensor which detects load. The passenger seat sensor (614P) is connected across pins 5 and 21 of TWICE. Voltage is supplied to the sensor from pin 5 via a resistor in TWICE, and pin 21 is grounded.
The sensor resistance varies according to the load it carries. TWICE detects the voltage across the sensor. When the sensor resistance is less than 50 kohm, the load on the seat is considered to correspond to a person sitting on the seat.
