General

The main unit and CD changer (CDC) in the Saab 9-5 have a new type of theft protection. The main unit and the CD changer are both connected to the I bus. When the main unit and CD changer are installed for the first time, they are married to the vehicle. This is a process that is carried out using Tech 2. During the marriage, the main unit and CD changer identify theft protection information from the car. As from now, the main unit and CD changer will only work in this vehicle. Therefore, the Saab 9-5 does not need a radio code.

This also means that a main unit and CD changer being removed from a Saab 9-5 must be divorced from the vehicle before removal unless it is to be refitted into the same car.

Note. If the main unit or CD changer is DIVORCED, SID shows "RADIO CODE" or "CDC CODE" on activation. MAIN UNIT CD CHANGER, OPTION (4D) CD CHANGER, OPTION (5D) If the main unit or CD changer is still married to another Saab 9-5, SID will display "RADIO LOCKED" or "CDC LOCKED" on activation. To be able to divorce any of the units with Tech 2, the procedure must be performed in the vehicle to which the unit is married. MAIN UNIT CD CHANGER, OPTION (4D) CD CHANGER, OPTION (5D)

IMPORTANTThe main unit and CD changer must be divorced before being returned for warranty repairs. The supplier cannot divorce them and will charge for all linked units sent to them.

  1. Connect Tech 2.
  2. Initiate communication with the audio system.
  3. Select "PROGRAMMING" in the system menu. The message "MARRIAGE/DIVORCE" is displayed.
  4. Press "ENTER".
  5. Select DIVORCED with the change button and press "OK". "DIVORCED" must be selected when removing the main unit (to be installed in another car or to be returned for warranty repair).
  6. The radio will now stop playing after a delay and "RADIO CODE" will be shown on SID.
  7. Press both special tools into the holes provided for them in the main unit. Press the tools in until they lock, at which point a click will be heard.
  8. Extract the main unit using the tool handles. Remove the special tools.

To fit

Note. Check that the attaching hooks on the ends of the main unit are not damaged (bent in).

  1. Push the main unit into the space provided for it in the center console until a click is heard.
  2. With Tech 2 connected and communication established with the Audio system, select "PROGRAMMING" from the system menu. The message "MARRIAGE/DIVORCE" is displayed.
  3. Press "ENTER".
  4. Select MARRIED with the change button and press "OK". "MARRIED" must be selected when installing a main unit into a Saab 9-5.
  5. "RADIO CODE" disappears from SID and the sound returns after a slight delay. WARNING: The CD player in the main unit is a Class 1 laser product. The CD player in the main unit should be serviced and repaired by a qualified technician only. If the casing on the main unit is damaged, laser radiation can occur with risk of injury.

  2. Remove the four screws in the front panel.
  3. Undo the six locking tabs which hold the front panel in place.

Note. When refitting, ensure that the connector under the front panel is correctly positioned.

  1. Remove the sill cover on the passenger side.
  2. Remove the lower cover panel.
  3. Fold the carpet to one side.
  4. Remove the two lower nuts that hold the amplifier and loosen the upper.
  5. Lift the amplifier out and unplug the connector.

Refit the parts removed in reverse order.

Note. Physically, the Prestige amplifiers for 4D and 5D cars are the same in appearance and connectors, so that it is possible to connect an amplifier intended for a 5D car into a 4D car. The sound quality from the sub-woofer will not be satisfactory, however, as it will be driven too hard. In the other case, if an amplifier for a 4D car is fitted into a 5D, the sub-woofer reproduction will sound washy.

  3. Take out the speakers and unplug the connectors.

  1. Fold down the right-hand rear seat backrest and remove the side bolster between the rear right door and the backrest.
  2. Lift out the concealing panel.
  3. Remove the right-hand storage compartment in the floor.
  4. Remove the scuff plate by first removing the covers on the right and left-hand sides. Undo the screws securing the scuff plate to the sill. Pull off the scuff plate, it is fastened with clips.
  5. Remove the rear roof cover and unplug the connections for the lighting.
  6. Remove the right-hand D-pillar trim and the right-hand concealing panel support (3 screws).
  7. Remove the five screws in the top of the right-hand side trim and lift out the trim.
  8. Remove the bass speaker and unplug the connector.

  1. Plug in the connector to the bass speaker and fit the speaker.
  2. Position the side trim and tighten the five screws at the top.
  3. Refit the concealing panel support (3 screws) and the D-pillar trim.
  4. Fit the rear roof cover and plug in the lighting.
  5. Press in the scuff plate clips and screw on the scuff plate. Fit the covers over the screws and position the sealing strip over the scuff plate.
  6. Fit the storage compartment in the floor.
  7. Lift in the concealing panel.
  8. Fit the side bolster between the rear right door and the backrest and fold up the rear seat backrest.

  3. Remove the trim on the right-hand C pillar to gain access to the antenna amplifier.
  4. Undo all connections to the antenna amplifier.
  5. Remove the screws holding the antenna amplifier and remove the unit. IMPORTANT: Be careful with the contact (4). When undoing the Fuba GO-NOGO HF contact, care is required to ensure that it is done correctly without damaging the connection. See the instructions (4).

  6. Remove the nuts securing the antenna amplifier and remove the unit. IMPORTANT: Handle the HF connector (5) with care. Exercise care when undoing the high frequency connector, Fuba GO-NOGO.   2. Carefully lift up the headlining and fit the two clips in the roof.
  3. Refit the C-pillar trims and fasteners over the rear side windows.
  4. Fit the roof covers over the rear side windows and refit the D-pillar trim.
  5. Plug in the lighting and fit the rear roof cover. IMPORTANT: Be careful with connector (2). Exercise care when undoing the high frequency connector, Fuba GO-NOGO.   3. Remove the steering switch.

Do not remove the existing antenna cable without fitting a new one.

  1. Remove the sill covers and cable conduit cover on the right-hand side (front and rear doors). Lower the seat cushion and backrest.
  2. Remove the speaker grille from the right-hand side of the parcel shelf.
  3. Remove the trim on the right-hand C pillar to gain access to the antenna amplifier.
  4. Undo the nut securing the luggage compartment trim. Fold the right-hand section to one side.
  5. Detach the antenna cable from the antenna amplifier.
  6. Cut the antenna cable (the loose part).
  7. Connect the new antenna cable to the antenna amplifier.
  8. Place the antenna cable in the cable conduit on the right-hand door side. (Attach with a cable tie to prevent rattling.)
  9. Fold up the carpet on the right-hand side and pass the cable under the carpet.
  10. Remove the main unit (radio) and radio compartment.
  11. Push the cable up towards the rear of the compartment.
  12. Detach the old antenna cable and cut off the loose part.
  13. Connect the new antenna cable.
  14. Secure with cable ties to prevent rattling.
  15. Refit the removed components.

Do not remove the existing antenna cable without fitting a new one.

  1. Remove the sill covers and cable conduit cover on the right-hand side (front and rear doors). Lower the seat cushion and backrest.
  2. Fold down the rear right seat (backrest and seat cushion) and remove the right-hand side bolster.
  3. Remove the right-hand side trim in the luggage compartment.
  4. Remove the rear roof cover and unplug the connectors for the lighting.
  5. Remove the D-pillar trim and the roof covers over the rear side windows.
  6. Remove the fasteners in the roof trim over the rear side windows and undo the top of both C-pillar trims.
  7. Remove the two clips in the roof and carefully bend down the headlining.
  8. Detach the antenna cable from the antenna amplifier.
  9. Cut the antenna cable (the loose part).
  10. Connect the new antenna cable to the antenna amplifier.
  11. Place the antenna cable into the cable duct on the side of the right hand door. (Secure with a cable tie to prevent rattling.)
  12. Fold up the carpet on the right-hand side and pass the cable under the carpet.
  13. Remove the main unit (radio) and radio compartment.
  14. Push the cable up towards the rear of the compartment.
  15. Detach the old antenna cable and cut off the loose part.
  16. Connect the new antenna cable.
  17. Secure with cable ties to prevent rattling.
  18. Refit the removed components.

Scheme 67: Repair
  1. Turn the ignition key to position ON and activate the electrically heated rear window.
  2. Get into the rear seat.
  3. Have someone cover the entire rear window with a blanket, tarpaulin or similar object. It should be dark (black) inside the car.
  4. Check the rear window to see where the break is located. A point of light (spark) should be seen.
  5. Mark the point on the window that is damaged.
  6. Remove the blanket from the car.
  7. Clean around the damaged point carefully and scrape away a few millimeters with a razor blade.
  8. Apply (brush on) contact paint 45-3007499 to the damaged point.
  9. Cut away surplus contact paint with a razor blade. Use a ruler as a guide.
  10. Check antenna performance for good reception.

  3. While Tech 2 is still connected and communicating, select "Programming" in the system menu. The message "Marriage/Divorce" will be displayed.
  4. Press "ENTER".
  5. Select "MARRIED" with the change button and press "OK".

Conditions

The control module's self-diagnosis has found an internal error.

Conditions; B2605

Diagnostic trouble code B2605 is generated if the CD changer magazine cannot be loaded or ejected correctly.

Diagnostic trouble codes B2625, B2755, B2760, B2762, B2765, B2767 and B2780 are generated if there is dirt on the disc, if the disc is the wrong way up or if there is a faulty disc in the CD changer or CD player.

The codes can also be generated if there is a mechanical fault with the CD changer or CD player.

Diagnostic trouble code B2615 is generated if a faulty magazine is used or if there is a mechanical fault in the CD changer.

Diagnostic trouble code B2620 is generated if the CD player is exposed to extreme vibrations or if there is a mechanical fault in the CD changer.

Diagnostic trouble code B2767 can be generated if the main unit or CD changer is exposed to extreme vibrations.

The main unit is reading incorrect potentiometer values for one or more of the Balance, Fader, Bass and Treble controls.

B2670

  1. The main unit receives theft protection information over the bus from DICE and TWICE. If the theft protection information is incorrect, diagnostic trouble code B2670 will be generated.
  2. If theft protection is programmed into the main unit (marriage or divorce) without DICE and TWICE being on the bus, diagnostic trouble code B2670 will be generated.

B2750

Diagnostic trouble code B2750 is generated if a disc does not load or eject, or if there is mechanical failure in the CD player.

B2770

Diagnostic trouble code B2770 is generated if the cassette is broken or jammed, if it does not eject or if there is mechanical failure in the cassette player.

B2790

  1. The CD player/CD changer stops working if the temperature in the CD player exceeds 76° C.
  2. The CD player/CD changer starts to work again when the temperature falls below 69°C.

The main unit receives theft-protection information over the bus from DICE and TWICE. If the theft-protection information is not correct, diagnostic trouble code B2785 will be generated.

If theft protection is programmed into the main unit (marriage or divorce) without DICE and TWICE being on the bus, diagnostic trouble code B2785 will be generated.

The diagnostic trouble code is generated if the main unit is communicating with DICE.

The diagnostic trouble code is generated if the main unit has not received the message KEY CORRECT when programming "marriage/divorce".

Control module

When the control module is supplied with current, the processor in it is tripped. The processor then reads the instructions stored in the control module's memory.

The control module is programmed to read the inputs and activate the outputs. If the control module program is faulty, the diagnostic trouble code "Internal Control Module Fault" will be generated.

The control module must be supplied with current before the system will function. The control module is supplied with current and the processor tripped when the control module can be contacted by the diagnostics instrument.

Outputs

The purpose of the system is to control a number of functions by means of various actuators, such as an injector or lamp. For the system to be capable of performing its functions, it must be possible to activate the actuators. For this reason the actuators must be connected to the control module and have a proper power supply or ground connection.

Inputs

A condition for the control module's capability of controlling its actuators is that the system's sensors supply it with correct values.

Sensor performance can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

In these cases, fitting a new control module has obviously not cured the fault. Therefore, go through all the following points carefully before changing the control module

  1. Check whether the problem can be solved with a control module software update (for control modules that can be reprogrammed). IMPORTANT: Avoid SPS programming unless it is absolutely necessary. It is extremely important to follow the instructions for SPS programming to avoid damaging the control module.
  2. Check all grounding points and the power supply to the control module.
  3. Check with a diagnostic tool that all the readings are plausible (several readings can affect one function).
  4. Check with the diagnostics tool that all activations function normally. (Malfunction in one output circuit can affect another output circuit).
  5. If the fault persists, the control module must be changed. Fill in the "Checklist for changing turbocharger and engine control module" before changing the control module and attach it when the control module is returned.
  6. Control modules are sensitive to electrostatic discharges. Great care must be taken to follow the following procedure to avoid damaging internal components in the control module: Keep the control module in its packaging for as long as possible. Never touch the pins of a control module with your hands or clothing. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Unplug the connector from the car's control module. Place the exchanged control module in its return packaging without touching the pins. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Plug in the connector to the car's control module.

A suitable instrument to use is a multimeter.

The ohmmeter must not be used to test components containing semi-conductors, e.g. control modules and relay with timing functions, etc.

When measuring resistance, the power supply to the system being tested must be disconnected as the measuring instrument generates a weak current in the circuit in question.

This is done to ensure that there is no current already in the tested circuit and that the correct reading is obtained.

  1. Turn on the load.
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring voltage and connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good grounding point.
  3. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the point where the voltage is to be read.
  4. On the output side of switches/control modules, it is better to start checking from these and gradually work your way towards the load. When there is no longer a voltage reading, you will have gone past the break point.
  5. On the input side of switches/control modules/consumers, it is better to start at the power source (normally a fuse) and then move gradually towards the switch/control module/consumer. When there is no longer a voltage reading, you will have gone past the break point.

  1. When unplugging a connector that has a catch, the catch must be undone first before parting the connector. Make sure the connector catch engages properly when plugging in the connector. Examples of some of the different types of connector in the car: 1.A. Pull out the sheath to undo the connector catch. After plugging the connector in, press in the sheath to lock the connector. NOTE: Use a small screwdriver to help undo the catch on the connector. 1.B. Press in the catch to release the connector. Make sure the connector is securely locked when plugged back in. 1.C. Pull out the sheath to undo the connector catch. After plugging the connector in, press in the sheath to lock the connector. 1.D. Press in the catch on the wire clamp and tip the wire forward. Plug in the connector and lock it by raising the wire clamp. NOTE: Make sure the wire clamp is locked in the correct position, to ensure good contact in the connector. 1.E. Raise the catch to release the connector. Make sure the connector is securely locked when plugged back in. 1.F. Press in the catch on the connector to release the wire clamp. Release the connector sheath and fold forward the wire clamp. NOTE: Using greater force than necessary attempting to fold the wire clamp forward before the sheath has been released can damage the connector. Plug in the connector and lock it by raising the wire clamp.
  2. Ground yourself, by touching the car's body or engine, when unplugging or plugging in the connectors on the car's control modules.
  3. Never unplug a connector by pulling the wiring.
  4. Never touch the pins on a control module with your hands or clothes. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  5. When taking measurements, use only probes designed for this purpose to avoid damaging the contacts. Use a test cable (part. no. 86 12 731) of the correct size.
  6. For repairs to connectors, the correct special tools and spare parts must be used.
  7. The following connectors may not be repaired: Screened cables/coaxial cable (e.g. ABS sensor cable) Airbag system and pyrotechnic belt pretensioner system High-tension cables (e.g. ignition system, xenon headlamps).

  1. Check that there are no problems with contact on connection.
  2. Check contacts, connectors and crimps for oxidation, withdrawn pins and pin clamping force. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  3. To check the clamping force, use a test cable with the correct size pins (from set 86 12 731). NOTE: A test cable with too large pins will damage the sleeves in the connector. Insert the test cable pin into the connector to check the pin clamping force. Poor clamping force can cause intermittent contact. Check also that the pin is aligned with the other pins in the connector. A pin that is recessed (pushed out) can cause intermittent breaks.
  4. Check the wiring and connections for breaks.
  5. Check the wiring harness, connectors and ground connections.

The Saab Audio System is a complete sound system for the car, including radio reception and a number of other functions.

The audio system is equipped with an electronic theft protection system that interacts with the car by the audio system being "married" to the car and accordingly linked to the car it was first installed in. A check is carried out each time the audio system is turned on to make sure the correct audio system is being used.

The audio system is available in three models: Premium, Prestige and Popular.

Each system contains the following units

Main unit

The main unit is central to the Saab Audio System and is located in the center console. The radio, cassette player and CD player are integrated with the main unit. The main unit also contains the controls for the various functions of the audio system.

The main unit communicates with the various other units and systems via the car's bus and wiring harnesses.

The radio module in the audio system is an AM/FM receiver with PLL frequency synthesis for the precise tuning of stations. It is factory-programmed to the frequency bands (2 x 6 AM and 3 x 6 FM) used in the various markets. If there is a loss of power (e.g., the battery is removed), none of the preset stations will be lost.

The audio system fitted to cars for the EU market incorporates RDS radio based on the double tuner system, which improves the quality of RDS reception and RDS radio services.

The cassette player is front-feed. The mechanical functions are fully microprocessor-controlled to reduce the load on the tape. Auto-reverse, track search and blank skip are included.

The CD player is front-feed with display for the compact disc inserted. The disc drawer holds 1 disc (diam. 8 or 12 cm). Random play and scan functions are included.

Display

The audio system uses the SID to show the current settings for the selected source.

The main unit transmits the display information on the bus, from where SID reads it.

Amplifier

The Premium and Prestige audio systems both have external amplifiers. The amplifier in the Prestige system has a higher output power than the Premium. It is available in two models, one for the 4D and one for the 5D.

Premium has 7 output channels and Prestige 9 output channels for speakers. The two additional output channels on the Prestige system are for bass speakers in the parcel shelf on the 4D or on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment on 5D.

The amplifier has a separate power supply. It is not connected to the bus.

Speakers

The Premium and Prestige audio systems have side and center speakers in the dashboard and speakers in the front and rear doors. The Prestige system also includes bass speakers in the parcel shelf on 4D cars and one bass speaker on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment on 5D cars.

The Popular audio system has side speakers in the dashboard and speakers in the rear doors.

Antenna system (4D)

There are two different types of antenna system for radio reception

  1. Antenna system 1 consists of an AM and an FM antenna with an antenna amplifier. System 1 is fitted to the car as standard in the EU and PA markets. Antenna system 1 is also used for a make of radio different to that used by Saab in the Saab Audio System.
  2. Antenna system 2 consists of an AM, an FM1 and an FM2 antenna with an antenna amplifier. System 2 is fitted as standard in cars for the US and JP markets. Antenna system 2 can only be used for the main units of the Premium and Prestige systems.

The antennas are fitted to the rear window. The AM antenna forms a separate loop and the FM antennas are integrated with the heating element on the rear window. The rear window is the same for both antenna systems, which allows the option of upgrading from antenna system 1 to 2.

The antenna amplifier is powered from the main unit and the amplified antenna signal is supplied to the radio via a coaxial cable.

Antenna system (5D)

There are two different types of antenna system for radio reception

  1. Antenna system 1 is intended for audio system: Popular, Premium and Prestige and comprises: an AM and FM antenna with antenna amplifier and coaxial cable for connecting between the amplifier and the main unit.
  2. Antenna system 2 is intended for audio systems: Premium and Prestige and comprises: an AM and FM antenna with antenna amplifier and coaxial cable for connecting between the amplifier and the main unit. an FM antenna with antenna amplifier and a coaxial cable for connecting between the two antenna amplifiers.

The AM/FM antenna is located in the rear right side window and its antenna amplifier in the roof above the rear right side window.

The FM antenna is located in the rear left side window and its antenna amplifier in the roof above the rear left side window.

The antenna system can be upgraded to antenna system 2 on markets where antenna system 1 is fitted as standard.

The antenna amplifier is powered from the main unit and the amplified antenna signal is supplied to the radio via a coaxial cable.

CD changer

A CD changer is available as an accessory for fitting in the luggage compartment of 4D and 5D models. The CD changer cartridge holds 6 CDs.

The CD changer is connected to the bus, via which it communicates with the main unit. It is activated (powered) when it receives a "Wake-up" signal from the main unit via the bus. The sound signal (balanced line output) from the CD changer is sent to the amplifier and speakers via the main unit.

The car is pre-wired for a CD changer as standard.

The steering wheel is fitted with special switches to enable the most important functions of the audio system to be operated simply and reliably.

The switches are connected to SID which reads their positions and sends information to the main unit via the bus.

All control modules in the Saab 9-5 are connected to the bus with the exception of ABS and SRS. For cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS control module is connected to the bus.

The bus allows large quantities of data to be sent between the control modules using only two cables. The bus is divided into a Powertrain bus (P-bus) and an Instrument bus (I-bus).

The Trionic, TCM and TC/ABS powertrain systems require fast data communication so that no noticeable delays occur, e.g. for torque limitation when changing gear.

Trionic, TCM and TC/ABS are connected to the P-bus, on which data transfer is ten times faster than on the I-bus.

The P-bus and I-bus are connected to MIU. MIU is responsible for making information on one bus available to the other bus.

The diagnostic instrument is not connected directly to the bus but communicates via the DICE, one of the control modules connected to the I-bus, and so has access to all control modules connected to the bus.

Vehicle speed data is important for many control modules. Since ABS is not connected to the bus, the vehicle speed signal is sent on a separate lead from ABS to MIU. MIU then sends the data over the buses. In cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS sends vehicle speed data to the MIU via the P-bus.

A bus is understood to be the leads over which information is sent digitally and serially. Digital means that the voltage difference between the leads has only two values, roughly 0 V and 5 V. The information is coded so that different combinations of 0 V and 5 V pulses have different meanings.

Serial means that the information is sent in "packets" which are transmitted one after the other in rapid succession.

All control modules in the Saab 9-5 are connected to the bus with the exception of ABS and SRS. For cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS control module is connected to the P-bus.

The buses consist of a P-bus (Powertrain Bus) and an I-bus (Instrument Bus). Both buses are connected to the MIU (Main Instrument Unit). The buses are electrically isolated from each other.

The diagnostic tool is not connected directly to the bus but communicates via the DICE, one of the control modules connected to the I-bus, and so has access to all control modules connected to the bus.

The data transfer rate of the P-bus is ten times faster than that of the I-bus. The reason for this is that the powertrain systems need information with the least possible delay, as for example when providing air mass compensation when the selector lever is moved from N to D or torque limitation in connection with gear changing.

All the information sent from one control module is accessible to all the other control modules on the bus. The MIU is responsible for ensuring that information available on one bus is also available on the other bus.

The control modules send out information on the bus at regular intervals. The time between two transmissions depends on the information being sent and varies between 10 milliseconds (0.010 seconds) and 1 second. Information is also sent out by the control modules whenever the information changes.

The transfer of information between control modules takes place on two leads, bus+ (green lead) and bus- (white lead). The leads are twisted to reduce susceptibility to electrical interference.

RDS (Radio Data System) is an information system transmitted in Europe in parallel with the radio programmer on the FM band. The RDS system ensures that reception is always optimal, irrespective of location. The RDS function automatically searches for the best transmitter.

The RDS radio contains a double tuner. This improves the quality of RDS reception, as one tuner is used solely to decode RDS information and the other solely for the reception of audio information. Changeover interruptions in reception remain, therefore, minimal, and changes in frequency inaudible.

As well as receiving FM broadcasts with RDS, the RDS radio also allows use of the following radio services

  1. TA/TP for traffic news
  2. PTY for programmer type selection
  3. EON - for NF, TA, TP and RDS data on the closest stations
  4. REG - for reception of local radio stations.

TA/TP (Traffic Announcement/Traffic Programmer)

TA/TP is a function for receiving traffic news with RDS reception. The normal transmission/audio source is interrupted and the traffic news given.

The volume level for traffic news is programmable.

PTY (Program Type)

PTY is an RDS function for receiving programmer in the FM band which are coded by programmer type. With PTY reception, the normal transmission/audio source is interrupted and the selected programmer type heard.

EON (Enhanced Other Network)

EON ensures that the traffic news is received over station limits, i.e., if a traffic message is broadcast by one station while RDS reception of another station is in progress, the message will still be received.

EON is a function that automatically updates the current RDS station for best reception. This means that if, for instance, RDS reception of a station is updated during a journey, other RDS stations will also be updated for best reception at the same time.

REG (Regional)

REG is a function which can be used to receive a preprogrammed local radio station, i.e., to lock on to a local radio station without RDS changing the station in search of better signal quality.

The cassette player is a front-feed unit. Its mechanical function is controlled entirely by a microprocessor. In the rest position (when no tapes are being played), the wheels are relieved from load so as to spare the mechanical parts and tapes. The cassette player reads the type of tape inserted and changes automatically from normal to chrome/metal and vice versa. Indication that 30 hours use has elapsed and that it is time to clean the recording heads is automatically shown on the SID display.

The cassette player is activated with the TAPE button in the main unit when a cassette is already inserted or by feeding a cassette into the player.

Information is sent to the bus when the cassette player is active. SID reads the information on the bus and shows the current setting on the display.

The CD changer is powered separately (+30) from fuse 9 to pin 6 in the CD changer connector.

When the audio system has been activated, the CD changer will read the "wake-up" information from the main unit on pins 5 and 11 on the bus. The CD changer is then activated (switched on).

The sound signal (line outputs) from the CD changer to the main unit is supplied via

  1. pins 3 and 8 for the left-hand channel
  2. pins 2 and 7 for the right-hand channel.

The CD changer functions are controlled by commands from the main unit via the bus.

Information is sent to the bus when the CD changer is active. SID reads the information and shows the status on the display.

The Premium and Prestige audio systems each contain a separate amplifier unit which supplies the speakers in the system. The amplifier is connected to the wiring harness via a 39-pin connector.

The amplifier for Prestige is available in two models, one for 4D and one for 5D cars. As the sub-woofer system for 5D cars is different, having another speaker element and location, the power amplifier outputs for the sub-woofer system require other characteristics.

The difference compared with Prestige for the 4D is that another type of signal filtering is required in the amplifier in order to drive the speaker element in the sub-woofer cabinet on the 5D.

Note. Physically, the Prestige amplifiers for 4D and 5D cars are the same in appearance and connectors, so that it is possible to connect an amplifier intended for a 5D car into a 4D car. The sound quality from the sub-woofer will not be satisfactory, however, as it will be driven too hard. In the other case, if an amplifier for a 4D car is fitted into a 5D, the sub-woofer reproduction will sound washy.

  1. The amplifier unit is powered separately (+30) from fuse 13 to pins 1 and 2 in the amplifier connector. When the audio system is activated, trigger voltage is simultaneously supplied by pin 7 in the head unit to pin 12 in the amplifier connector. The trigger voltage activates the amplifier.
  2. Audio - the input signal (four channels) is supplied by the head unit line outputs to the amplifier. Two channels are used for the front speaker and two for the rear (fader function).
  3. Audio Premium - the output signal (6 + 1 channels) from the amplifier to the front and rear speakers.
  4. Audio Prestige - the output signal (8 + 1 channels) from the amplifier to the front and rear speakers.
  5. Mute control - is supplied by pin 5 in the head unit to pin 11 in the amplifier connector to disconnect the sound. It prevents a clicking sound from being heard in the speakers when the ignition is switched on and off.

Antennas

The antennas for radio reception are integrated in the rear window and are located as follows

  1. AM - antenna positioned at the top of the rear window.
  2. FM - antenna (antennae) integrated in the heating element.

The rear window is the same on all markets.

The antenna signal is amplified by an amplifier located on the right-hand C-pillar. The Premium and Prestige systems have one of two different antenna amplifiers, red or black, depending on the market. The black amplifier is used for the Popular system.

The antenna amplifier is supplied with trigger voltage from pin 7 on the head unit and is grounded by being bolted to the chassis.

The black amplifier is used on all markets for retrofitted radios.

The left-hand C-pillar has an antenna filter that grounds the heating element but prevents the antenna signal from going to ground. The antenna filter is fitted as standard on all cars.

  2. FM1 antenna on same connection as the heating element. A filter in the antenna amplifier prevents the antenna signal from going to the heating element's power supply. An antenna filter on the ground side of the heating element prevents the antenna signal from going to ground.
  3. FM2 antenna on the same connector as the AM antenna on the rear window. It is connected to a loop above the AM antenna and to the heating element.
  4. The heated rear window is connected to the antenna amplifier and antenna filter. A capacitor prevents the voltage from reaching the antenna amplifier. The rear window heating is grounded via the antenna filter.

The antenna amplifier has a switching function that, working with the radio, selects the best FM signal (selects FM1 or FM2).

The amplified signal is fed via a coaxial cable to the radio.

Two types of antenna are available for the audio system

  1. Antenna system 1 with an AM/FM antenna and antenna amplifier is intended for audio systems Popular, Premium and Prestige.
  2. Antenna system 2 with an AM/FM antenna and an FM antenna with antenna amplifier for each antenna is intended for audio systems Premium and Prestige.

The antennas for radio reception are integrated in the rear side windows and are located as follows

  1. The AM/FM antenna is located in the rear right side window.
  2. The FM antenna is located in the rear left side window.

The rear side windows are the same on all markets.

Antenna amplifier

The antenna amplifiers are located in the roof above the respective rear side window and are available in three models, one for antenna system 1 and two for antenna system 2.

The antenna signal is amplified in the antenna amplifier and passed via the coaxial cable to the head unit (radio). The amplifier is powered with a trigger voltage from pin 7 on the head unit and is grounded by being bolted to the body.

Antenna system 2 has a diversity functions, which means that whichever of the two antennas is giving the best signal is used by the radio receiver. The diversity function works only together with the Saab audio systems Premium and Prestige.

The audio system can also be controlled with the steering wheel switches (the control buttons are located on the steering wheel). The switches comprise two units (six connectors). Detailed information is given in the Owner's Manual.

The steering wheel switches are connected to SID and present information on the connectors that are active. SID sends information on the buttons to the bus which is then read by the main unit.

SID supplies +5 V to the steering wheel switches via pin 22, and grounds them via pin 9.

The six connectors comprise six resistors connected in series. When a button is pressed, the connector in question is grounded (see the table).

When a connector is pressed, the total resistance in the circuit changes, as does the voltage value which SID then reads.

Automatic volume control is controlled by the car's speed to compensate for background noise that occurs when the car is moving. The function is active at speeds over 60 kph.

The main instrument unit (MIU) receives a speed signal from the ABS. MIU sends the information out on the bus where it can be read by the main unit and the volume controlled. The level is raised as the vehicle's speed increases, and lowered as it drops.

The audio system is equipped with electronic theft protection. Information concerning the theft-protection device is connected in the form of a code to the audio system of the car in which it is installed. Programming is performed with the diagnostic tool.

The theft protection prevents theft by the main unit and CD changer being "married" to the car. If they have not been "married", RADIO CODE or CDC CODE will be displayed when the audio system is turned on.

The audio system checks the validity of the theft protection information (if they are "married") at regular intervals. This also applies if +30 has been temporarily disconnected. If the information is not correct, RADIO LOCKED will be displayed.

If a CD changer has been installed in the car, it will also have unique theft protection information. If the information on the CD changer is not correct (not "married"), CDC LOCKED will be displayed when the CD changer is selected.

IMPORTANTThe audio system is "married/divorced" to/from the car with the diagnostic tool. Divorce can only be performed in the original vehicle, and with the correct ignition key in the ignition switch. See REPLACING THE MAIN UNIT IN THE AUDIO SYSTEM .
