TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

ON-VEHICLE TESTING

Note. Before performing on-vehicle testing, ensure battery cables and all other electrical connections are firmly attached and free of oxidation. Ensure drive belt is in good condition and is tensioned correctly.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: 9-5
  1. Turn ignition on. If charging indicator light comes on, go to next step. If charging indicator light does not come on, go to step 5. Start and idle engine at 2500 RPM. Measure voltage at battery. If 13.5-14.5 volts are present, go to next step. If 13.5-14.5 volts are not present, repair or replace generator.
  2. Put a maximum load on generator by turning on headlights, rear window defogger, etc. Measure amperage between battery positive terminal and generator. If amperage is equal to rated current of generator, go to next step. If amperage does not equal rated current of generator, repair or replace generator.
  3. Check voltage drop between battery and generator by turning on high beams. Measure voltage between generator B+ terminal and battery negative terminal. (Scheme 1) If voltage is less than.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is greater than.5 volts, repair wiring as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-139159-S39000130792002042600000).
  4. With high beams on, measure voltage between battery negative terminal and generator case. If voltage is less than.5 volts, system is okay. If voltage is greater than.5 volts, repair wiring as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-139159-S39000130792002042600000).
  5. Connect jumper wire between generator terminal D+ and ground. (Scheme 1) If charging indicator light comes on, repair or replace generator. If charging indicator light does not come on, problem is in instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

WIRING CONTINUITY TEST

  1. Connect a voltmeter between generator B+ terminal and ground. (Scheme 1) Voltmeter should indicate battery voltage. If battery voltage is not present, check wiring between generator and battery.
  2. Turn ignition on and ensure generator indicator light comes on. If light does not come on, check bulb and wiring between generator and warning light.

OUTPUT TEST

Note. Ensure B+ connection at generator is tight and insulating sleeve is not pinched between nut and washer. (Scheme 1) Generator output may be low if connection is loose.

  1. Ensure connections at battery, generator, and starter are clean and tight. Ensure generator, engine, and body are properly grounded. Ensure generator drive belt is tight and in good condition.
  2. Connect ammeter following manufacturer's instructions. Connect voltmeter leads to battery terminals. Start engine and run at 3000 RPM. Adjust carbon pile on tester to obtain maximum generator output. DO NOT allow voltage to drop to less than 12.6 volts.
  3. Output should equal generator rating (stamped on generator) minus 16-20 amps. If output is more than 16-20 amps below generator rating, replace regulator and retest. If output is still low, repair or replace generator.

REGULATOR CONTROL VOLTAGE TEST

  1. Connect ammeter following manufacturer's instructions. Connect voltmeter leads to battery terminals. Start engine and run at 3000 RPM.
  2. Run engine until voltage stops rising. Voltage should be 13.5-14.5 volts. If voltage is not within specification, remove regulator from generator. Ensure brushes are longer than .29" (7.5 mm). Replace if necessary.
  3. If brushes are okay and regulator fails to keep voltage within specified limits, replace regulator and retest. If voltage is still incorrect, repair or replace generator.
