Programming

Note. All car keys must be programmed at the same time.

IMPORTANTThe transponders and remote controls that are not available during programming will be rendered unusable.

  1. Connect the diagnostic tool
  2. Remove the antenna unit for immobilization by turning it clockwise. Do not disconnect the switch. Place the antenna unit on the side of the ignition switch. NOTE: The antenna unit should not be removed at low temperatures due to the risk of crack formation.
  3. Hold the accompanying transponder over the hole in the antenna unit. Switch the ignition to the ON position. Hold the transponder in the same position for a few seconds. Once the transponder code has been read by TWICE, the alarm indicator diode will stop its double flashing. If the alarm indicator diode does not stop its double flashing, repeat step 3. Adjust the position of the accompanying transponder.
  4. Select body system and navigate to TWICE with the diagnostic tool. Do not press ENTER.
  5. Hold the accompanying transponder above the hole in the antenna unit.
  6. Press ENTER on the diagnostic tool.
  7. Select Programming
  8. Select Spare Part Programming
  9. Perform spare part programming. Select the alternatives applicable to the car in question.
  10. Upon completion of spare part programming, select "Programming of transponders and remote controls". Press ENTER. Press NO when asked "Do you wish to exit".
  11. Hold the accompanying transponder above the hole in the antenna unit. The seat-belt warning lamp will blink to show that the transponder code was understood by TWICE. Press OK.
  12. Turn off the ignition and restart from step 3 if the seat belt warning lamp does not flash.
  13. Follow the instructions in the diagnostic tool, with the following exceptions: At the first time with step three in Tech 2, refit the antenna unit and refit the same key. NOTE: The antenna unit should not be fitted at low temperatures due to the risk of crack formation.
  14. Follow the instructions in the diagnostic tool

Tech 2

  1. Look at the 'FASTEN SEATBELT' lamp
  2. Press the remote control unlock button once per second until the 'FASTEN SEATBELT' lamp blinks once. More than 8 presses on the button may be necessary.
  3. Remove the key from the ignition switch and fit the next key.
  4. Turn the key to the 'ON' position.
  5. Repeat steps 1 and 2 . Additional keys and remote controls are programmed in following points 3-5. Press 'OK' once all keys and remote controls are programmed.
  1. Once all keys are programmed, select "Immobilization".
  2. Perform immobilization programming.
  3. Clear DTCs in TWICE.
  4. Clear DTCs in the engine management system.
  5. Discard the accompanying transponder.
  6. Fill in the return form that comes with the spare part package and return TWICE within 40 days of the order date.

Control module

When the control module is supplied with current, the processor in it is tripped. The processor then reads the instructions stored in the control module's memory.

The control module is programmed to read the inputs and activate the outputs. If the control module program is faulty, the diagnostic trouble code "Internal Control Module Fault" will be generated.

The control module must be supplied with current before the system will function. The control module is supplied with current and the processor tripped when the control module can be contacted by the diagnostics instrument.

Outputs

The purpose of the system is to control a number of functions by means of various actuators, such as an injector or lamp. For the system to be capable of performing its functions, it must be possible to activate the actuators. For this reason the actuators must be connected to the control module and have a proper power supply or ground connection.

Inputs

A condition for the control module's capability of controlling its actuators is that the system's sensors supply it with correct values.

Sensor performance can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

Scheme 42: Before Changing A Control Module

It is our experience that the majority of control modules returned to us for repair or replacement under warranty are in perfect working order. In these cases, fitting a new control module has obviously not cured the fault. Therefore, go through all the following points carefully before changing the control module

  1. Check the latest edition of TIS2000 to see whether the problem can be solved with a control module software update (for control modules that can be reprogrammed). IMPORTANT: Avoid SPS programming unless it is absolutely necessary. It is extremely important to follow the instructions for SPS programming to avoid damaging the control module.
  2. Check all grounding points and the power supply to the control module.
  3. Check with a diagnostic tool that all the readings are plausible (several readings can affect one function).
  4. Check with the diagnostics tool that all activations function normally. (Malfunction in one output circuit can affect another output circuit).
  5. If the fault persists, the control module must be changed. Fill in the "Checklist for changing turbocharger and engine control module" before changing the control module and attach it when the control module is returned.
  6. Control modules are sensitive to electrostatic discharges. Great care must be taken to follow the following procedure to avoid damaging internal components in the control module: Keep the control module in its packaging for as long as possible. Never touch the pins of a control module with your hands or clothing. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Unplug the connector from the car's control module. Place the exchanged control module in its return packaging without touching the pins. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Plug in the connector to the car's control module.

A suitable instrument to use is a multimeter.

The ohmmeter must not be used to test components containing semi-conductors, e.g. control modules and relay with timing functions, etc.

When measuring resistance, the power supply to the system being tested must be disconnected as the measuring instrument generates a weak current in the circuit in question.

This is done to ensure that there is no current already in the tested circuit and that the correct reading is obtained.

  1. Turn on the load.
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring voltage and connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good grounding point.
  3. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the point where the voltage is to be read.
  4. On the output side of switches/control modules, it is better to start checking from these and gradually work your way towards the load. When there is no longer a voltage reading, you will have gone past the break point.
  5. On the input side of switches/control modules/consumers, it is better to start at the power source (normally a fuse) and then move gradually towards the switch/control module/consumer. When there is no longer a voltage reading, you will have gone past the break point.

  1. Make sure the component or lead to be tested is not under tension (e.g. by removing the relevant fuse).
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring ohms and connect the ohmmeter to each end of the component/lead to be tested.
  3. Jiggle the relevant wiring harness while observing the ohmmeter. Normally, the resistance of a wiring harness is less than 1 ohm. Specified values apply to components.

  1. Make sure the lead being tested is not under tension (e.g. remove the relevant fuse) and that any loads are disconnected.
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring ohms.

  4. Carefully jiggle the wiring harness and make sure the multimeter reading shows infinite resistance (OL) all the time.

  1. When unplugging a connector that has a catch, the catch must be undone first before parting the connector. Make sure the connector catch engages properly when plugging in the connector. Examples of some of the different types of connector in the car: 1.A. Pull out the sheath to undo the connector catch. After plugging the connector in, press in the sheath to lock the connector. NOTE: Use a small screwdriver to help undo the catch on the connector. 1.B. Press in the catch to release the connector. Make sure the connector is securely locked when plugged back in. 1.C. Pull out the sheath to undo the connector catch. After plugging the connector in, press in the sheath to lock the connector. 1.D. Press in the catch on the wire clamp and tip the wire forward. Plug in the connector and lock it by raising the wire clamp. NOTE: Make sure the wire clamp is locked in the correct position, to ensure good contact in the connector. 1.E. Raise the catch to release the connector. Make sure the connector is securely locked when plugged back in. 1.F. Press in the catch on the connector to release the wire clamp. Release the connector sheath and fold forward the wire clamp. NOTE: Using greater force than necessary attempting to fold the wire clamp forward before the sheath has been released can damage the connector. Plug in the connector and lock it by raising the wire clamp.
  2. Ground yourself, by touching the car's body or engine, when unplugging or plugging in the connectors on the car's control modules.
  3. Never unplug a connector by pulling the wiring.
  4. Never touch the pins on a control module with your hands or clothes. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  5. When taking measurements, use only probes designed for this purpose to avoid damaging the contacts. Use a test cable (part. no. 86 12 731) of the correct size.
  6. For repairs to connectors, the correct special tools and spare parts must be used.
  7. The following connectors may not be repaired: Screened cables/coaxial cable (e.g. ABS sensor cable) Airbag system and pyrotechnic belt pretensioner system High-tension cables (e.g. ignition system, xenon headlamps).

  1. Check that there are no problems with contact on connection.
  2. Check contacts, connectors and crimps for oxidation, withdrawn pins and pin clamping force. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  3. To check the clamping force, use a test cable with the correct size pins (from set 86 12 731). NOTE: A test cable with too large pins will damage the sleeves in the connector. Insert the test cable pin into the connector to check the pin clamping force. Poor clamping force can cause intermittent contact. Check also that the pin is aligned with the other pins in the connector. A pin that is recessed (pushed out) can cause intermittent breaks.
  4. Check the wiring and connections for breaks.
  5. Check the wiring harness, connectors and ground connections.

  1. Note the measuring conditions and use common sense when assessing the results.
  2. The nominal test readings shown apply with the ignition switched ON unless otherwise stated.
  3. First, check that the power supply to the module is correct and that it is grounded properly.
  4. Then check all the sensor inputs and signals from other systems.
  5. Finally, check the outputs. Remember that the test readings do not tell us whether or not the module is functioning properly.
  6. If a test reading is incorrect, investigate which leads, connectors or components should then be checked, using the wiring diagram.
  7. The nominal test readings shown below apply when using a calibrated Fluke 88/97.
  8. Test readings % (+) and ms (+) show the pulse ratio and pulse duration of the signal. The test instrument used must be able to measure pulse ratio and pulse width. The (+) sign denotes a positive trigger pulse, TRIG+.

General

TWICE stands for Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics. The TWICE control module is located on the floor under the LH front seat and connected to the wiring harness with a 70-pin connector.

Twice controls the following functions

Lamp check

TWICE checks the circuits for rear light and brake lights.

  1. Rear lights TWICE acts as a filament monitor for the rear lights. On a break in a circuit, SID can read in error message on the bus sent by TWICE. The message activates an information text on the display and an audible warning. TWICE checks whether voltage is present at the rear light inputs; this information is available on the bus. The information is used by DICE.
  2. Brake lights TWICE acts as a filament monitor for the brake lights. On a break in a circuit, SID can read EN error message on the bus sent by TWICE. The message activates an information text on the display and an audible warning. TWICE checks whether voltage is present at the brake light inputs; this information is available on the bus. The information is used by SID.

Seat belt warning

The seat belt warning light always lights for 6 seconds when the ignition is switched ON. If the belt tongue is pressed into the buckle, the lamp goes out after these 6 seconds; if not, the lamp stays on.

On certain markets there is also an audible warning which is activated if any passenger has not fastened their seat belt when the ignition is ON. The audible warning is active for 6 seconds when the ignition is turned ON or until all seat belts are fastened.

The passenger seat is fitted with a sensor which detects when the seat is occupied. The resistance of the sensor varies depending on the load on the seat.

Electric heated rear seat

The car can be factory-fitted with heated rear seats. Two heater pads are then fitted in the two outer seats.

TWICE controls the connection time for the heaters as a function of outside temperature.

Electric powered passenger seat

TWICE controls a relay which is connected in series with the electric powered passenger seat. When the relay is activated, the seat can be operated.

Operation is possible with the ignition ON or OFF with any front door open. With the door open and the ignition OFF, the function is turned off after 20 minutes.

Operation is possible during a period of 30 seconds after the driver's or passenger's door is closed or after the ignition is switched OFF.

With the ignition in the ST position, operation is not possible.

Central locking system

The car is fitted with a central locking system as standard and TWICE controls the motors. The central locking can be operated with the remote control, the key in the driver's door, or the switch on the centre console.

There are three buttons on the car key (key with integrated remote control): lock, unlock and unlock boot lid (4D) or tailgate (5D).

The lock mechanisms and motors are integrated into one unit. The driver's door lock unit contains a microswitch which is activated when the key is put into the door lock.

The central locking function has three positions: UNLOCKED, LOCKED, and THEFT SECURITY LOCKED. The latter means that the car CANNOT be unlocked from inside the passenger compartment. The theft security locking function is market dependent.

Immobilization

The car is fitted as standard with a system which prevents the car being started without the correct key. For this, a transponder is incorporated into the key with a code unique to that particular transponder.

On the ignition switch there is a receiver which receives the identification code from the transponder and passes this information on to TWICE. TWICE has been programmed to recognize the car's transponders and if the key in the ignition switch is one of the right ones, the car can be started.

The immobilizer must be joint-programmed with the control module after changing a component in the chain. This applies when changing TWICE, MIU, Trionic 7.

Anti-theft alarm

The car can be factory-fitted with an anti-theft alarm, of which there are two variants

  1. Variant 1 comprises; door switches, bonnet switch, boot lid/tailgate switch and glass breakage sensor (4D) or glass breakage sensors (5D).
  2. Variant 2 consists of as above plus a tilt sensor which trips the alarm if an attempt is made to steal a wheel.

The anti-theft alarm has a piezo-electric siren. The siren has an integral battery to ensure that the alarm can be given even if the power from the car's ordinary battery (car battery) is interrupted. The siren is located at the front of the LH front wheel housing.

The behavior of the alarm when tripped is market dependent and programmable.

Scheme 81

Scheme 81: P-bus and I-bus

All control modules in the Saab 9-5 are connected to the bus with the exception of ABS and SRS. For cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS control module is connected to the bus.

The bus allows large quantities of data to be sent between the control modules using only two cables. The bus is divided into a Powertrain bus (P-bus) and an Instrument bus (I-bus).

The Trionic, TCM and TC/ABS powertrain systems require fast data communication so that no noticeable delays occur, e.g. for torque limitation when changing gear.

Trionic, TCM and TC/ABS are connected to the P-bus, on which data transfer is ten times faster than on the I-bus.

The P-bus and I-bus are connected to MIU. MIU is responsible for making information on one bus available to the other bus.

The diagnostic instrument is not connected directly to the bus but communicates via the DICE, one of the control modules connected to the I-bus, and so has access to all control modules connected to the bus.

Vehicle speed data is important for many control modules. Since ABS is not connected to the bus, the vehicle speed signal is sent on a separate lead from ABS to MIU. MIU then sends the data over the buses. In cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS sends vehicle speed data to the MIU via the P-bus.

Scheme 87: Control Module

The control module in the TWICE system is placed under the left-hand front seat. It is connected to system components via a 70-pole connector.

The task of the control module, as a central unit, is to monitor and control the components and functions in the system, as follows

  1. TWICE - controls the power supply to the various functions in the system. Power is supplied direct via the module and via external relays which are grounded through the module.
  2. TWICE - is connected to the instrument bus (I-bus) and thus receives, processes, and sends out information (communicates) via the bus with other car systems (control modules) connected to the bus.
  3. TWICE - in the event of a fault, stores the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) which can be read using the diagnostic instrument (Tech 2).
  4. TWICE - is programmable. Certain functions can be programmed to meet legal requirements, market demands, customer preferences, and car equipment. see «MENU "PROGRAMMING"»(ref-212229-S42599061402005122200000)

Scheme 93: P-bus and I-bus

A bus is the leads over which information is sent digitally and serially. Digital means that the voltage difference between the leads has only two values, roughly 0 V and 5 V. The information is coded so that different combinations of 0 V and 5 V pulses have different meanings.

Serial means that the information is sent in "packets" which are transmitted one after the other in rapid succession.

All control modules in the Saab 9-5 are connected to the bus with the exception of ABS and SRS. For cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS control module is connected to the P-bus.

The bus consists of a P-bus (Powertrain Bus) and an I-bus (Instrument Bus). Both buses are connected to the MIU (Main Instrument Unit). The buses are electrically isolated from each other.

The diagnostic tool is not connected directly to the bus but communicates via the DICE, one of the control modules connected to the I-bus, and so has access to all control modules connected to the bus.

The data transfer rate of the P-bus is ten times faster than that of the I-bus. The reason for this is that the powertrain systems need information with the least possible delay, as for example when providing air mass compensation when the selector lever is moved from N to D or torque limitation in connection with gear changing.

All information sent out by a control module is available to all other control modules connected to the bus. The MIU ensures that the information which is available on one bus is also made available on the other.

The control modules send out information on the bus at regular intervals. The time between two transmissions depends on the information being sent and varies between 10 milliseconds (0.010 seconds) and 1 second. Information is also sent out by the control modules whenever the information changes.

The transfer of information between the control modules takes place on two leads, bus+ (green cable) and bus- (white cable). The leads are twisted to reduce susceptibility to electrical disturbances.
