- Raise the car. If a jack is used, the car must be supported on safety stands.
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the nut from the anti-roll bar link.
- Remove the steering swivel member from the MacPherson strut. Hold the bolt in place and remove the nut. Tap out the bolt. Use a new bolt when fitting. NOTE: The bolts are of a spline type and must not be turned.
- Withdraw the steering swivel member from the suspension strut.
- Remove the MacPherson strut's three retaining bolts at the top attachment point.
- Remove the MacPherson strut.

- Fit the MacPherson strut in place on the car and tighten the three bolts at the top attachment point. The smallest hole acts as a locating hole. Tighten the bolts alternately. Tightening torque: 17 Nm (13 lbf ft).
- Move back the ABS sensor cable and brake hose. Fit the steering swivel member using new bolts. Hold the bolt and fit the nut. NOTE: The bolts are of a spline type and must not be turned. Tightening torque: 100 Nm +90° (74 lbf ft +90°)
- Tighten the nut securing the anti-roll bar link. Tightening torque 84 Nm (62 lbf ft) Tightening torque, nut with steel lock: 95 Nm (66 lbf ft)
- Fit the wheel. See «WHEEL & TIRES»(ref-274828) . Tightening torque: 110 Nm (81 lbf ft). Lower the car to the floor.

- Remove the MacPherson strut and clamp it in a vice. Compress the spring using «SPRING COMPRESSOR 88 18 791»(ref-274859-S33026334452007122400000) and «HOLDER 88 18 817»(ref-274859-S22021567042007122400000) .
- Counterhold the piston rod and remove the «NUT WITH TOOL 89 96 613»(ref-274859-S33677395762007122400000) . Do not reuse the nut.
- Remove the bearing and upper spring seat.
- Remove the spring, rubber gaiter and compression stop.

- Mount the compression stop, spring seat and rubber gaiter and then fit the spring.
- Make sure that the lower end of the spring abuts against the stop in the lower spring seat.
- Fit the upper bearing.
- Tighten the new nut. Tightening torque 105 Nm (76 lbf ft).
- Release the spring compressor and fit the MacPherson strut.
Overview
- Connect equipment for 4-wheel alignment and follow the description for the relevant equipment.
- Check the rear wheel settings with table «REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(ref-274829-S17896652232007122400000) and adjust as necessary.
- Check the front wheel settings with table «FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(ref-274829-S17896652232007122400000) and adjust as necessary.
Scheme 14
- Use a 4-column lift to raise the car so that the wheels are under pressure.
- Fasten the longitudinal links with «FIXTURE 89 96 795»(ref-274829-S05422189372007122400000)
- Slightly undo the bolts to the body bracket of one of the longitudinal links.
- Using «SLEEVE 89 96 811»(ref-274859-S24470981992007122400000) , move the bracket outwards or inwards. Move it inwards to increase toe-in. Check the value.
- Tighten the bolts. Tightening torque 90 Nm +30° (70 lbf ft +30°)
- Repeat steps 3 - 5 on the other side.
- Treat the body with corrosion protection.
- Proceed with «ADJUSTING FRONT TOE ANGLE»(ref-274859-S32549648882007122400000) .

- Start with «ADJUSTING REAR TOE ANGLE»(ref-274859-S39702365672007122400000) if not already done.
- Fasten the steering wheel in its straight ahead position.
- Undo the lock nut on the track rod.
- Rotate the track rod clockwise to reduce the toe angle or anticlockwise to increase the toe angle. Read off the value and compare it with Wheel alignment. IMPORTANT: Make sure the boot does not rotate as well.
- Tighten the lock nut. Tightening torque 70 Nm (55 lbf ft)
- Check the track rod length by measuring the distance (A) between the lock nut and the groove in the track rod by the dust excluder. The distance must be max. 149 mm. Maximum difference in distance between right and left-hand sides is 7 mm.
- Treat the track rod threads with corrosion protection after tightening.
Scheme 17
The wheel suspension comprises a MacPherson strut with cylindrical coil spring and double-action gas dampers. There is also an anti-roll bar and a subframe.

The suspension elements consist of cylindrical spiral springs.
The stop for the spring on extension is incorporated in the damper. The movement of the spring on compression is limited by a specially designed stop on the damper piston rod. This stop ensures smooth damping of the oscillating movement of the spring, limiting stresses on the attachment points to a minimum.
Scheme 19
The damper is of double-acting, gas-filled type and acts as a suspension strut. It has a welded-on spring seat and is bolted to the steering swivel member by means of two nuts and bolts. The stop for the spring on extension is incorporated in the damper.
The gas pressure in the damper is used to maintain pressure on the damper fluid. This pressure reduces the foaming tendency of the fluid. It also counteracts formation of air bubbles that can result in noisy operation of the damper.
The piston rod is protected against dirt and moisture by a rubber gaiter to ensure a long service life.
Scheme 20
The subframe is fastened to the body with bolts and bushes. The middle bushes and bolts are of the type can come loose in case of a collision. This is to provide good energy absorption.
