General

When the head unit is first installed it is married to the vehicle. This is a process which is carried out using Tech 2. During the marriage the head unit identifies theft protection information from the vehicle. From that moment onwards the head unit will only function in that particular vehicle. It is therefore that no radio code is needed for the Saab 9-5.

This also means that a head unit and being removed from a Saab 9-5 must be divorced from the vehicle before removal unless it is to be refitted into the same car.

Note. If the head unit is DIVORCED, "NO VIN" is shown on the radio display during activation. If the head unit is still married to another Saab 9-5, "LOCKED" appears in the radio display upon activation.

IMPORTANTThe unit must be separated before it is returned for repairs under warranty. The supplier cannot do this and will make a charge for all connected units that are sent to them.

Head unit

Note. If the unit is removed but is to be re-installed in the same vehicle, the Tech2 divorce/marriage procedure is not required.

Note. To divorce/marry the head unit from/to the car requires security access from TIS 2000.

  1. Connect «TECH2»(ref-278636-S35859646052008013000000) .
  2. Establish communication with the audio system.
  3. Select " «PROGRAMMING»(ref-278636-S15415482062008013000000) " from the system menu. The text "Marriage/Divorce" is displayed.
  4. Press "ENTER".
  5. Select DIVORCED with the change button and press "OK". "DIVORCED" must be selected when removing the head unit (to be installed in another car or to be returned for warranty repair).
  6. The radio becomes silent and "NO VIN" is shown on the radio display.
  7. Carefully remove the plugs by pressing a small screwdriver through the plugs. Pull out the plugs with the screwdriver.
  8. Remove the bolts.
  9. Pull out the unit
  10. Undo the connector and the antenna connection.

  1. Plug in the connector and the antenna. NOTE: Before the unit has been "MARRIED" to the car, "NO VIN" appears on the radio display.
  2. Push the unit into the centre console.
  3. Fit the bolts.
  4. Fit new plugs, ensuring that the plugs are guided into the location grooves.
  5. With Tech2 connected and communicating with the audio system, select " «PROGRAMMING»(ref-278636-S15415482062008013000000) " from the system menu. The text "Marriage/Divorce" is displayed.
  6. Press "ENTER".
  7. Select MARRIED with the change button and press "OK". "MARRIED" must be selected when installing a head unit into a Saab 9-5.
  8. "NO VIN" disappears from the radio display and the sound returns.
  9. Carry out spare parts programming using Tech 2.
  10. Set the time and date on the unit's clock.
WARNINGThe CD player in the head unit is a Class 1 laser product. The CD player in the head unit should only be serviced and repaired by a qualified technician. If the casing on the head unit is damaged, there could be laser radiation with risk of injury.

  1. Remove the main unit. See «HEAD UNIT»(ref-278636-S14559316432008013000000) .
  2. Remove the four screws in the front panel.
  3. Undo the six locking tabs which hold the front panel in place.

Note. When refitting, ensure that the connector under the front panel is correctly positioned.

To fit

Fit the front panel on the main unit and slide in the main unit. See HEAD UNIT .

  1. Remove the Airbag, driver.
  2. Unplug the steering wheel switch connector.
  3. Remove the screws. Remove the controls using Removal tool (82 93 474).
  4. Remove the cable from the cable mounting.

  3. Fit the screws to the steering wheel controls.

  1. Remove the sill cover on the passenger side.
  2. Remove the lower cover panel.
  3. Fold the carpet to one side.
  4. Remove the two lower nuts that hold the amplifier and loosen the upper.
  5. Lift the amplifier out and unplug the connector.

Refit the parts removed in reverse order.

Note. Physically, the Prestige amplifiers for 4D and 5D cars are the same in appearance and connectors, so that it is possible to connect an amplifier intended for a 5D car into a 4D car. The sound quality from the sub-woofer will not be satisfactory, however, as it will be driven too hard. In the other case, if an amplifier for a 4D car is fitted into a 5D, the sub-woofer reproduction will sound washy.

  3. Take out the speakers and unplug the connectors.

  1. Fold down the right-hand rear seat backrest and remove the side bolster between the rear right door and the backrest.
  2. Lift out the concealing panel.
  3. Remove the right-hand storage compartment in the floor.
  4. Remove the scuff plate by first removing the covers on the right and left-hand sides. Undo the screws securing the scuff plate to the sill. Pull off the scuff plate, it is fastened with clips.
  5. Remove the rear roof cover and unplug the connections for the lighting.
  6. Remove the right-hand D-pillar trim and the right-hand concealing panel support (3 screws).
  7. Remove the five screws in the top of the right-hand side trim and lift out the trim.
  8. Remove the bass speaker and unplug the connector.

  1. Plug in the connector to the bass speaker and fit the speaker.
  2. Position the side trim and tighten the five screws at the top.
  3. Refit the concealing panel support (3 screws) and the D-pillar trim.
  4. Fit the rear roof cover and plug in the lighting.
  5. Press in the scuff plate clips and screw on the scuff plate. Fit the covers over the screws and position the sealing strip over the scuff plate.
  6. Fit the storage compartment in the floor.
  7. Lift in the concealing panel.
  8. Fit the side bolster between the rear right door and the backrest and fold up the rear seat backrest.

  3. Remove the trim on the right-hand C pillar to gain access to the antenna amplifier.

IMPORTANTBe careful with the contact (4). When undoing the Fuba GONOGO HF contact, care is required to ensure that it is done correctly without damaging the connection. See the instructions (4).

  6. Remove the nuts securing the antenna amplifier and remove the unit.

Do not remove the existing antenna cable without fitting a new one.

  1. Remove the sill covers and cable conduit cover on the right-hand side (front and rear doors). Lower the seat cushion and backrest.
  2. Remove the speaker grille from the right-hand side of the parcel shelf.
  3. Remove the trim on the right-hand C pillar to gain access to the antenna amplifier.
  4. Undo the nut securing the luggage compartment trim. Fold the right-hand section to one side.
  5. Detach the antenna cable from the antenna amplifier.
  6. Cut the antenna cable (the loose part).
  7. Connect the new antenna cable to the antenna amplifier.
  8. Place the antenna cable in the cable conduit on the right-hand door side. (Attach with a cable tie to prevent rattling.)
  9. Fold up the carpet on the right-hand side and pass the cable under the carpet.
  10. Remove the main unit (radio) and radio compartment.
  11. Push the cable up towards the rear of the compartment.
  12. Detach the old antenna cable and cut off the loose part.
  13. Connect the new antenna cable.
  14. Secure with cable ties to prevent rattling.
  15. Refit the removed components.

Do not remove the existing antenna cable without fitting a new one.

  1. Remove the sill covers and cable conduit cover on the right-hand side (front and rear doors). Lower the seat cushion and backrest.
  2. Fold down the rear right seat (backrest and seat cushion) and remove the right-hand side bolster.
  3. Remove the right-hand side trim in the luggage compartment.
  4. Remove the rear roof cover and unplug the connectors for the lighting.
  5. Remove the D-pillar trim and the roof covers over the rear side windows.
  6. Remove the fasteners in the roof trim over the rear side windows and undo the top of both C-pillar trims.
  7. Remove the two clips in the roof and carefully bend down the headlining.
  8. Detach the antenna cable from the antenna amplifier.
  9. Cut the antenna cable (the loose part).
  10. Connect the new antenna cable to the antenna amplifier.
  11. Place the antenna cable into the cable duct on the side of the right hand door. (Secure with a cable tie to prevent rattling.)
  12. Fold up the carpet on the right-hand side and pass the cable under the carpet.
  13. Remove the main unit (radio) and radio compartment.
  14. Push the cable up towards the rear of the compartment.
  15. Detach the old antenna cable and cut off the loose part.
  16. Connect the new antenna cable.
  17. Secure with cable ties to prevent rattling.
  18. Refit the removed components.

Scheme 48: Repair
  1. Turn the ignition key to position ON and activate the electrically heated rear window.
  2. Get into the rear seat.
  3. Have someone cover the entire rear window with a blanket, tarpaulin or similar object. It should be dark (black) inside the car.
  4. Check the rear window to see where the break is located. A point of light (spark) should be seen.
  5. Mark the point on the window that is damaged.
  6. Remove the blanket from the car.
  7. Clean around the damaged point carefully and scrape away a few millimetres with a razor blade.
  8. Apply (brush on) contact paint 45-3007499 to the damaged point.
  9. Cut away surplus contact paint with a razor blade. Use a ruler as a guide.
  10. Check antenna performance for good reception.

  1. Remove the parcel shelf trim.
  2. Slightly loosen the screws (A) for the satellite radio receiver.
  3. Remove the satellite radio receiver: Unplug the connectors (A) for the satellite radio receiver. IMPORTANT: Take care when releasing the locking mechanism on the connector so as not to damage the connector. Pull the halves straight apart to avoid bending the pins. For further information regarding connectors, refer to «CONNECTORS, HANDLING AND INSPECTION»(ref-278636-S16650852252008013000000) . Unhook the bracket from the screws (B). Remove the bracket from the satellite radio receiver (C).

  2. Tighten the screws (A) for the satellite radio receiver.
  3. Fit the parcel shelf trim.
  4. Carry out spare parts programming using Tech 2.
  5. Activate the satellite radio receiver.

  2. Remove the satellite radio receiver: Unplug the connectors (A) for the satellite radio receiver. Refitting

  1. Fit the satellite radio receiver: Fit the bracket (C) for the satellite radio receiver. Fit the bracket's nuts (B). Plug in the connectors (A) for the satellite radio receiver. IMPORTANT: Take care when plugging in the connector so as not to damage or press out the pins/sleeves in the connector. For further information regarding connectors, refer to «CONNECTORS, HANDLING AND INSPECTION»(ref-278636-S16650852252008013000000) .
  2. Fit the storage box and fold down the luggage compartment trim, floor panel.
  3. Carry out spare parts programming using Tech 2.
  4. Activate the satellite radio receiver.

Satellite radio receiver, activation

  1. Acivate the audio system head unit.
  2. Set XM radio to channel 1 and not the radio ID. NOTE: The radio receiver ID is needed to activate the receiver.
  3. Call XM at 1-800-556-3600 to activate the receiver.
  4. Park the car outdoors in a area with nothing blocking the sky southwards.
  5. Allow the car to remain outdoors for 30 minutes with the ignition in the ON position and the radio activated in order to activate the XM service.
  6. The satellite radio receiver will receive the remaining XM channels after activation.

The Saab Audio System is a complete sound system for the car, including radio reception and a number of other functions.

The audio system is equipped with an electronic theft protection system that interacts with the car by means of the audio system being "married" to the car and accordingly linked to the car in which it was first installed. Each time the audio system is turned on a check is carried out to make sure the correct audio system is being used.

The audio system is available in three models: Popular, Premium and Prestige.

Each system contains the following units

  1. Main unit: Radio CD Player/changer
  2. Satellite radio receiver (349)
  3. SID, control module (541)
  4. Amplifier (Premium and Prestige only)
  5. Speakers
  6. Antenna system
  7. Steering wheel controls

The head unit is mounted in the centre console. The radio and CD player/changer are built into the head unit. On the head unit there is a display and control buttons for controlling the different functions of the audio system.

The head unit communicates with the various other units and systems via the car's bus and wiring harnesses.

Radio

The radio section of the audio system is an AM/FM receiver with PLL frequency synthesis for exact station tuning. The frequency bands of the radio are pre-programmed in the factory to suit the different markets. In the event of a loss of power (e.g. due to disconnection of the battery) the programmed settings are not lost.

CD Player/CD changer

In the head unit there is either a CD player or a CD changer installed.

The CD player/CD changer is front loading with an indicator that shows when a CD is loaded. The CD player's disc drawer accommodates 1 compact disc (dia.8 or 12 cm). The CD changer's magazine accommodates 6 compact discs.

Display

The head unit of the audio system has its own display to show the current settings for the chosen source.

Amplifier

The Premium and Prestige audio systems both have external amplifiers. The amplifier in the Prestige system has a higher output power than the Premium. It is available in two models, one for the 4D and one for the 5D.

Premium has 7 output channels and Prestige 9 output channels for speakers. The two additional output channels on the Prestige system are for bass speakers in the parcel shelf on the 4D or on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment on 5D.

The amplifier has a separate power supply. It is not connected to the bus.

Speakers

The Premium and Prestige audio systems have side and centre speakers in the dashboard and speakers in the front and rear doors. The Prestige system also includes bass speakers in the parcel shelf on 4D cars and one bass speaker on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment on 5D cars.

The Popular audio system has side speakers in the dashboard and speakers in the rear doors.

Antenna system AM/FM (4D)

There are two different types of antenna system for radio reception

  1. Antenna system 1 consists of an AM and an FM antenna with an antenna amplifier. System 1 is fitted to the car as standard in the EU and PA markets. Antenna system 1 is also used for a make of radio different to that used by Saab in the Saab Audio System.
  2. Antenna system 2 consists of an AM, an FM1 and an FM2 antenna with an antenna amplifier. System 2 is fitted as standard in cars for the US and JP markets. Antenna system 2 can only be used for the main units of the Premium and Prestige systems.

The antennas are fitted to the rear window. The AM antenna forms a separate loop and the FM antennas are integrated with the heating element on the rear window. The rear window is the same for both antenna systems, which allows the option of upgrading from antenna system 1 to 2.

The antenna amplifier is powered from the head unit and the amplified antenna signal is supplied to the radio via a coaxial cable.

Antenna system AM/FM (5D)

There are two different types of antenna system for radio reception

  1. Antenna system 1 is intended for audio system: Popular, Premium and Prestige and comprises: an AM and FM antenna with antenna amplifier and coaxial cable for connecting between the amplifier and the head unit.
  2. Antenna system 2 is intended for audio systems: Premium and Prestige and comprises: an AM and FM antenna with antenna amplifier and coaxial cable for connecting between the amplifier and the head unit. an FM antenna with antenna amplifier and a coaxial cable for connecting between the two antenna amplifiers.

The AM/FM antenna is located in the rear right side window and its antenna amplifier in the roof above the rear right side window.

The FM antenna is located in the rear left side window and its antenna amplifier in the roof above the rear left side window.

The antenna system can be upgraded to antenna system 2 on markets where antenna system 1 is fitted as standard.

The antenna amplifier is powered from the head unit and the amplified antenna signal is supplied to the radio via a coaxial cable.

Satellite radio reception (certain markets)

Within the audio system there is a receiver for satellite radio reception which is located under the parcel shelf in four door cars or under the forward luggage compartment floor in five door cars. The antenna is located on the roof and is a combined antenna for radio, telephone and GPS.

Steering wheel controls

The steering wheel is fitted with special switches to enable the most important functions of the audio system to be operated simply and reliably.

The switches are connected to the SID control module which senses the switch positions and transmits information, via the bus, to the head unit.

The head unit is grounded (main ground) at grounding point G42 (LHD) and G40 (RHD) via pin 8 (K14).

The head unit is connected to the wiring harness and the bus via one 14 pin and one 16 pin connector.

The purpose of the main unit is to control the system units and functions of the audio system as follows

  1. To activate the audio system units by sending "wake-up" information. "Wake-up" can be information sent via the bus or logic voltage (trigger voltage) via the wiring harness. When the "wake-up" signal is received, the unit is switched on and becomes active.   2. To receive audio and antenna signals from the units in the system. Audio signals are sent on via the main unit outputs to the amplifier and speakers.

Activation

The audio system is turned on/off by pressing the volume control knob. When switched on, the system starts with the last settings that were active.

The system can be activated irrespective of the position of the ignition switch, even if the key has been removed (+B information goes via the bus).

If the ignition is turned OFF and the key remains in the lock, the audio system will automatically stop one hour after the button was last activated. This applies even if the audio system is turned on when the key is not in the ignition.

The audio system is controlled using buttons on both the steering wheel and the control panel.

The radio receiver is integrated in the head unit. The radio section is an AM/FM receiver with PLL frequency synthesis for exact station tuning (frequency locking).

Function

The antenna signal is fed from the antenna amplifier via coaxial cable and a separate connector to the head unit. For further information about the car antenna system. See ANTENNA SYSTEM, RADIO (4D) and ANTENNA SYSTEM, RADIO (5D) .

The radio is activated with the RADIO BAND button on the head unit. When the radio is active information is sent on the bus.

RDS

The RDS (Radio data System) is an information system that transmits in parallel with radio programmes on the FM network. The signals from such a FM station make it possible to search for the most powerful transmitter for that particular station and thus to maintain the best reception. The automatic transmission of traffic messages and programme type vigilance are examples of functions made possible through RDS. A precondition for the proper functioning of RDS is the existence of normal reception conditions.

CD player/CD changer/MP3 player

In the head unit there is either a CD player or a CD changer installed.

The CD player is front-loading. The disc drawer accepts one compact disc.

The CD player is activated either by loading a disc in the disc drawer or by pressing the CD AUX button if a disc has already been loaded.

When all tracks have been played the disc will play again from the beginning. The CD player is switched off either by selecting another audio source or by pressing the ON/OFF button to shut down the audio system.

The CD is unloaded by pressing the EJECT button. If the ejected disc is not removed, the player will, for safety reasons, re-load the disc after 10 s.

The CD changer is front-loading. The disc magazine accommodates six CD discs.

The CD changer is activated either by loading one or more CD/MP3 discs in the disc magazine or by the CD AUX button if a disc is already loaded. In order to load a disc push the LOAD button and follow the instructions on the display.

When all tracks have been played the CD will play again from the beginning. The CD changer is switched off either by selecting another audio source or by pressing the ON/OFF button to shut down the audio system.

The CD is unloaded by pressing the EJECT button. If the ejected disc is not removed, the player will, for safety reasons, re-load the disc after 10 s.

MP3 player

The audio system can play MP3 files that have been recorded on a compact disc with a bit speed of 32 - 320 kbps. The sound quality can vary depending on the quality of the recording disc, the recording method or the quality of the recorded music. The audio system can read and play a maximum of 50 MP3 folders, 50 play lists, 10 sessions and 255 MP3 files. Discs that contain more folders, play lists sessions and files will be played up to the maximum limit but everything over the limit will be ignored.

The MP3 player is activated either by loading a CD-R disc with MP3 files in the disc drawer or by pressing the CD AUX button if a disc with MP3 files has already been loaded.

The MP3 player is switched off either by selecting another audio source or by pressing the ON/OFF button to shut down the audio system.

The MP3 disc is unloaded by pressing the EJECT button. If the ejected disc is not removed, the player will, for safety reasons, re-load the disc after 10 s.

The AUX input is located at the bottom right of the head unit. A portable unit such as a MP3 player can be connected to the audio system via this input. The sound is adjusted on the control panel or on the steering wheel. Other operations such as track changing, fast reeling etc. are selected with the controls on the portable unit.

Audio system with CD changer

  1. Push the clock button
  2. Press the menu selection button directly below the menu alternative you wish to change.
  3. Push the menu selection button to increase the time or date one step at a time. The time and date can also be adjusted by pushing the SEEK, FWD or REV buttons.

Audio system without CD changer

  1. Push the MENU button.
  2. Press the menu selection button directly below the clock symbol on the display.
  3. Press the menu selection button directly below the menu alternative you wish to change.
  4. Push the menu selection button to increase the time or date one step at a time. The time and date can also be adjusted by pushing the SEEK, FWD or REV buttons.

RDS time

For RDS time to be available, radio reception must be normal and the current radio station must be transmitting RDS time signals, (CT Clock Time).

  1. In the clock menu, press the menu selection button directly below the arrow symbol on the display.
  2. Press the menu selection button directly below the RDS time menu alternative.
  3. The clock is now adjusted automatically and the display shows: "Adjusting to RDS time...". If no time information is available or the RDS reception is poor, the display shows: "No RDS time accessible".

Normally the navigation system receives the correct time and date via GPS signals.

Press the button indicating time at the top right of the screen to display today's date for 5 seconds.

Manual setting

If the GPS time is incorrect or if there is no GPS signal then the time and date can be adjusted manually.

  1. Hold the button indicating time, at the top right of the screen, depressed for more than 2 seconds to switch to the menu for setting time.
  2. Adjust the time and date.
IMPORTANTIf the battery is, or has been, disconnected then the time cannot be displayed before the audio system has received GPS signals from a satellite. It is not possible to set the clock manually either.

The Premium and Prestige audio systems each contain a separate amplifier unit which supplies the speakers in the system. The amplifier is connected to the wiring harness via a 39-pin connector.

The amplifier for Prestige is available in two models, one for 4D and one for 5D cars. As the sub-woofer system for 5D cars is different, having another speaker element and location, the power amplifier outputs for the sub-woofer system require other characteristics.

The difference compared with Prestige for the 4D is that another type of signal filtering is required in the amplifier in order to drive the speaker element in the sub-woofer cabinet on the 5D.

Note. Physically, the Prestige amplifiers for 4D and 5D cars are the same in appearance and connectors, so that it is possible to connect an amplifier intended for a 5D car into a 4D car. The sound quality from the sub-woofer will not be satisfactory, however, as it will be driven too hard. In the other case, if an amplifier for a 4D car is fitted into a 5D, the sub-woofer reproduction will sound washy.

  1. The amplifier unit is powered separately (+30) from fuse 13 to pins 1 and 2 in the amplifier connector. When the audio system is activated, a trigger voltage is simultaneously supplied from pin 6(K14) of the head unit to pin 12 of the amplifier connector. The trigger voltage then activates the amplifier.
  2. Audio - the input signal (four channels) is supplied by the head unit line outputs to the amplifier. Two channels are used for the front speaker and two for the rear (fader function).
  3. Audio Premium - the output signal (6 + 1 channels) from the amplifier to the front and rear speakers.
  4. Audio Prestige - the output signal (8 + 1 channels) from the amplifier to the front and rear speakers.
  5. Mute control - is supplied by pin 8(K16) of the head unit to pin 11 in the amplifier connector to disconnect the sound. It prevents a clicking sound from being heard in the speakers when the ignition is switched on or off.

Antennas

The antennas for radio reception are integrated in the rear window and are located as follows

  1. AM - antenna positioned at the top of the rear window.
  2. FM - antenna (antennae) integrated in the heating element.

The rear window is the same on all markets.

The antenna signal is amplified by an amplifier located on the right-hand C-pillar. The Premium and

Prestige systems have one of two different antenna amplifiers, red or black, depending on the market. The black amplifier is used for the Popular system.

The antenna amplifier is supplied with trigger voltage from pin 12(K14) of the head unit and is grounded by being bolted to the chassis.

The black amplifier is used on all markets for retrofitted radios.

The left-hand C-pillar has an antenna filter that grounds the heating element but prevents the antenna signal from going to ground. The antenna filter is fitted as standard on all cars.

The antenna amplifier has a switching function that, working with the radio, selects the best FM signal (selects FM1 or FM2).

The amplified signal is fed via a coaxial cable to the radio.

Antenna system 2 has a diversity functions, which means that whichever of the two antennas is giving the best signal is used by the radio receiver. The diversity function works only together with the Saab audio systems Premium and Prestige.

The audio system can also be operated with the steering wheel controls (control buttons on the steering wheel). The steering wheel controls which are used for the audio system comprise 2 units (6 switches). Full instructions for their use are given in the owner's manual.

The steering wheel switches are connected to SID control module which communicates information defining which switches are active. SID sends information about the buttons on the bus which is then read by the head unit.

The SID control module supplies +5V to the steering wheel controls via pin 25 and grounds them via pin 26.

The steering wheel control switches incorporate resistors connected in series. When a button is pressed, the activated switch is grounded, see the table.

The value of the total resistance in the circuit changes according to which switch is depressed and there is a corresponding change in the voltage which is sensed by the SID control module.

Automatic volume control is controlled by the car's speed to compensate for background noise that occurs when the car is being driven. The function is active at speeds over 25 km/h (16 mph).

One of the following sensitivity levels can be selected for the function

  1. Off (no compensation)
  2. Low (low compensation)
  3. Med (medium compensation)
  4. High (high compensation)

The ESP control module transmits a speed signal on the P-bus. This is read by the MIU. The MIU then transmits the information on the I-bus, which the head unit can read to regulate volume. The level is increased when speed increases and is lowered when speed decreases.

The audio system is equipped with electronic theft protection. Information concerning the theft protection device is connected in the form of a code to the audio system of the car in which it is installed. Programming is performed with the diagnostic tool.

Theft protection is effected by "marrying" the head unit to the car. If such a "marriage" has not occurred, "LOCKED" will be displayed when attempting to activate the audio system.

The audio system checks at regular intervals that the theft protection information is correct (if "marriage" has occurred). This applies also if +30 is temporarily disconnected. If the information is not correct the display shows "LOCKED".

IMPORTANTThe audio system is "married/divorced" to/from the car with the diagnostic tool. Divorce can only be performed in the original vehicle, and with the correct ignition key in the ignition switch.

Scheme 97: Satellite radio receiver (certain markets)

For satellite radio reception there is a receiver unit connected to the audio system head unit (EHU) and to the roof mounted satellite radio antenna.

The digital receiver unit is placed under the parcel shelf in 4D cars or under the forward luggage compartment floor in 5D cars. The antenna is located on the roof and is a combined antenna for radio, telephone and GPS. The satellite radio receiver receives signals from satellites and slave transmitters. The receiver has a frequency range of 2332 to 2345 MHz.

A special subscription is required in order to listen to satellite radio via the receiver.

Scope

Nominal values and instructions for measuring voltages on the control module can be found under the respective headings below.

Remember

  1. Note the test conditions and use common sense when assessing the test result.
  2. The nominal test readings shown apply with the ignition switched ON unless otherwise stated.
  3. First check that the control module has a power supply and is grounded.
  4. Then check all sensor inputs and signals from other systems.
  5. Finally, check the outputs. Remember that the test readings do not tell us whether or not the module is functioning properly.
  6. If any reading is not OK, consult the wiring diagram to trace the leads, connectors or components which should be checked more thoroughly.
  7. The specified test readings refer to those obtained with a calibrated Fluke 88/97.
  8. Test readings % (+) and ms (+) show the pulse ratio and pulse duration of the signal. The test instrument used must be able to measure pulse ratio and pulse width. The (+) sign denotes a positive trigger pulse, TRIG+ .

Nominal values and instructions for measuring voltages on the control module can be found under the respective headings below.

  1. Note the test conditions and use common sense when assessing the test result.
  2. The nominal test readings shown apply with the ignition switched ON unless otherwise stated.
  3. First check that the control module has a power supply and is grounded.
  4. Then check all sensor inputs and signals from other systems.
  5. Finally, check the outputs. Remember that the test readings do not tell us whether or not the module is functioning properly.
  6. If any reading is not OK, consult the wiring diagram to trace the leads, connectors or components which should be checked more thoroughly.
  7. The specified test readings refer to those obtained with a calibrated Fluke 88/97.
  8. Test readings % (+) and ms (+) show the pulse ratio and pulse duration of the signal. The test instrument used must be able to measure pulse ratio and pulse width. The (+) sign denotes a positive trigger pulse, TRIG+ .

Scheme 227: Fault diagnosis strategy for electronic systems
  1. The customer's description of the problem constitutes a basis for the fault diagnosis strategy. If necessary, the customer must demonstrate the trouble on the car to avoid misunderstandings.
  2. In certain cases, the function may be correct. 2.a. Good product knowledge is required to decide this. 2.b. If the function is correct, this must be explained to the customer.
  3. If the function is judged to be faulty, the car should be repaired. Saab's fault diagnosis strategy assumes that the technician is familiar with the customer's description of the problem. So note the customer's complaint and any other observations on the job sheet.
  4. The technician obtains a readout of the diagnostic trouble codes from all systems. A malfunction in one system can often be caused by a fault in another system.
  5. The car may contain diagnostic trouble codes which are secondary faults or which have been incorrectly generated. 5.a. Compare the customer complaint with the symptom description for the various diagnostic trouble codes. WIS has a quick search function for this purpose. 5.b. If the symptom description for a diagnostic trouble code matches the customer's complaint, this diagnostic trouble code is probably caused by the primary fault. Repair as per instructions.
  6. If there is no match with diagnostic trouble codes or symptoms, the technician must diagnose the fault himself. 6.a. Search in WIS under fault diagnosis for symptoms in the system where the fault exists. Also check whether there is a TSB/MI in force. 6.b. If the symptom description in the current system matches the complaint, the right fault diagnosis description has probably been found. Repair as per instructions.
  7. Certain fault symptoms can be remedied by reprogramming the control module. 7.a. Does the customer complaint stem from a known software problem in a programmable control module? 7.b. Reprogram the control module following the instructions in SPS.
  8. If there is no match with diagnostic trouble codes or symptoms, the technician must diagnose the fault himself. Good technical product knowledge is required to solve this type of problem.
  9. A final check must be carried out after the repair.
  10. The car is ready.

Control module

When the control module is supplied with current, the processor in it is tripped. The processor then reads the instructions stored in the control module's memory.

The control module is programmed to read the inputs and activate the outputs. If the control module program is faulty, the diagnostic trouble code "Internal Control Module Fault" will be generated.

The control module must be supplied with current before the system will function. The control module is supplied with current and the processor tripped when the control module can be contacted by the diagnostics instrument.

Outputs

The purpose of the system is to control a number of functions by means of various actuators, such as an injector or lamp. For the system to be capable of performing its functions, it must be possible to activate the actuators. For this reason the actuators must be connected to the control module and have a proper power supply or ground connection.

The performance of the majority of the actuators can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

Inputs

A condition for the control module's capability of controlling its actuators is that the system's sensors supply it with correct values.

Sensor performance can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

It is our experience that the majority of control modules returned to us for repair or replacement under warranty are in perfect working order. In these cases, fitting a new control module has obviously not cured the fault. Therefore, go through all the following points carefully before changing the control module

  1. Check the latest edition of TIS2000 to see whether the problem can be solved with a control module software update (for control modules that can be reprogrammed). IMPORTANT: Avoid SPS programming unless it is absolutely necessary. It is extremely important to follow the instructions for SPS programming to avoid damaging the control module.
  2. Check all grounding points and the power supply to the control module.
  3. Check with a diagnostic tool that all the readings are plausible (several readings can affect one function).
  4. Check with the diagnostics tool that all activations function normally. (Malfunction in one output circuit can affect another output circuit).
  5. If the fault persists, the control module must be changed. Fill in the "Checklist for changing turbocharger and engine control module" before changing the control module and attach it when the control module is returned.
  6. Control modules are sensitive to electrostatic discharges. Great care must be taken to follow the following procedure to avoid damaging internal components in the control module: Keep the control module in its packaging for as long as possible. Never touch the pins of a control module with your hands or clothing. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Unplug the connector from the car's control module. Place the exchanged control module in its return packaging without touching the pins. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Plug in the connector to the car's control module.

The ohmmeter must not be used to test components containing semi-conductors, e.g. control modules and relay with timing functions, etc.

When measuring resistance, the power supply to the system being tested must be disconnected as the measuring instrument generates a weak current in the circuit in question.

This is done to ensure that there is no current already in the tested circuit and that the correct reading is obtained.

  2. Set the multimeter for measuring voltage and connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good grounding point.

  1. When detaching connectors with locks, it is essential that the lock is released before the connector is detached. Ensure the connector locks properly when connecting. Example of some different connector types used in the car: 1.A. Pull out the slide to unlock the connector. After attaching the connector lock it by pressing in the slide. NOTE: Using a small screwdriver will help to unlock the connector. 1.B. Press in the lock tab to unlock the connector. Make sure the connector is locked properly when connecting. 1.C. Pull out the slide to unlock the connector. After attaching the connector lock it by pressing in the slide. 1.D. Press in the brace catch and push forward the brace. Push back the brace to lock the connector after connecting. NOTE: Make sure the brace is locked in the right position to ensure good contact between connectors. 1.E. Lift up the lock tab to unlock the connector. Make sure the connector is locked properly when connecting. 1.F. Press in the connector lock tab to release the brace. Release the connector slide while pushing the brace forward. NOTE: The connector may be damaged if too much force is used to push forward the brace without first releasing the slide. Push back the brace to lock the connector after connecting.
  2. Ground yourself by touching the car body/engine before removing or fitting any of the connectors on the car's control modules.
  3. Never pull the wiring harness when removing a connector.
  4. Never touch the pins on the control module with your hands or clothes. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  5. When testing only probe tips intended for the purpose are to be used to avoid damaging the contacts. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the right size.
  6. Connectors may only be repaired when using specified special tools and spare parts.
  7. The following connectors must not be repaired: Screened wires/coaxial cables (e.g. ESP sensor cable) Airbag system and pyrotechnical seat-belt tensioner system High tension cable (e.g. ignition system, xenon lamp).

  1. Check for any contact problems in connections.
  2. Check contacts, connectors and crimp connections with respect to oxidation, loose pins and pin clamping force. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  3. To check the connector clamping force, use a test cable with the right pin size (from kit 86 12 731). NOTE: Using a test cable that is too big will damage connector sleeves. Insert the test cable pin into the connector pin to feel the clamping force of the pins in question. Poor clamping force of the connector pins can cause bad contact. Also check that the engagement height of the pin is the same as the other pins in the connector. An engagement height that is too low could be an indication of a loose pin in the connector, which could cause bad contact.
  4. Check wires and connections for open circuits.
  5. Check wiring harness, connectors and ground connections.
