Check the wiring

Jiggle the wiring harness at several points and in different directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits in the wiring harness. Observe the multimeter, test lamp or diagnostic instrument while doing this.

  1. Remove component: Cooling Fan Low Relay. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Connect test lamp 86 11 857 to pin 4 of the relay holder and a good grounding point. Move the wiring harness at several spots and in several directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force. The test lamp should light. Is the function correct? If YES , go to next step. If NO , repair or replace wiring between terminal No. 4 and terminal No. 1 of relay holder and then on to fuse No. 15.
  2. Using scan tool, contact DICE. Turn ignition on. Connect test light between terminal No. 4 and terminal No. 5 of relay holder. Using scan tool, activate: Cooling Fan Low Function ON. Move the wiring harness at several spots and in several directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force. If test lamp lights, replace relay. If test lamp does not light, repair wiring between terminal No. 5 of relay holder and pin No. 35 of control module.

  1. Remove component: Cooling Fan High Relay 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Connect test lamp 86 11 857 to pin 4 of the relay holder and a good grounding point. Move the wiring harness at several spots and in several directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force. The test lamp should light. Is the function correct? If YES , go to next step. If NO , repair or replace wiring between terminal No. 4 of relay holder 81 and terminal 4 of relay holder 155 and then on to fuse No. 15.
  2. Using scan tool, contact DICE. Turn ignition on. Connect test light between terminal No. 4 and terminal No. 5 of relay holder. Using scan tool, activate: Cooling Fan High Function ON. Move the wiring harness at several spots and in several directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force. If test lamp lights, replace relay. If test lamp does not light, repair wiring between terminal No. 5 of relay holder and pin No. 53 of control module.

  1. Remove component: Cooling Fan High Relay 2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Connect test lamp 86 11 857 to pin 4 of the relay holder and a good grounding point. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force. The test lamp should light. Is the function correct? If YES , go to next step.   2. Using scan tool, contact DICE. Turn ignition on. Connect test light between terminal No. 4 and terminal No. 5 of relay holder. Using scan tool, activate: Cooling Fan High Function ON. Move the wiring harness at several spots and in several directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force. If test lamp lights, replace Cooling Fan High Relay 2. If test lamp does not light, repair wiring between terminal No. 5 of relay holder and pin No. 51 of control module.

Scheme 15: Before changing a control module

It has been found from experience that the majority of control modules returned for warranty repairs are in perfect working order. In these cases, changing the control module has obviously not cured the fault. Go through the following points before changing the control module

  1. Check all grounding points and the power supply to the control module.
  2. Using the diagnostic instrument, check that all readouts are plausible.
  3. Using the diagnostic instrument, check that all activation commands produce the correct results.
  4. If the fault persists, the control module must be replaced.
  5. Before handling the control module, it is important to ground yourself by touching the engine, for example. Avoid touching the control module's pins.
