Calibrating SAS (steering wheel angle sensor)

  1. Raise the car.
  2. Drain the brake fluid from the master cylinder via the bleed nipples on the front brake calipers. Use brake bleeder «88 19 096 BLEEDING EQUIPMENT»(ref-274857-S06303672972007122400000) .
  3. Lower the car.
  4. Place a cover over the splash guard to protect it from any brake-fluid spillage.
  5. V6 diesel engine: Remove the turbocharger heat shield.
  6. Detach and move aside the electrical centre.
  7. Blow the brake pipe connections clean using compressed air.
  8. Unplug the connector from ESP unit.
  9. Detach the brake pipes between the ESP unit and master brake cylinder.
  10. Disconnect the brake pipes from the ESP unit.
  11. Remove the ESP unit.

  1. Make sure the rubber plug is inserted in the ESP unit's bracket on the structural member.
  2. Fit the ESP unit. Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)
  3. Fit the brake pipes that run to the wheel cylinders. Thread the nipples by hand.
  4. Tighten the nipples with a brake pipe wrench. Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 lbf ft) Fit the brake pipes that run to the master cylinder. Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 lbf ft)
  5. Plug in the connector.
  6. Fit the electrical distribution unit.
  7. V6 diesel engine: Fit the turbocharger heat shield.
  8. Bleed the brake system, see «BLEEDING THE BRAKE SYSTEM»(ref-274858-S32966446532007122400000) .
  9. If the unit is changed: Connect the diagnostic tool and configure the unit.
  10. Perform «SPARE PARTS PROGRAMMING, ESP»(ref-274857-S33198720182007122400000) .

Calibration Of Steering Wheel Angle Sensor

The steering wheel angle sensor must be calibrated after working on the steering assembly and aligning wheel angles.

Note. The wheel alignment must be correct before calibration is carried out.

  1. Put the wheels straight ahead.
  2. Connect Tech 2 and select Programming - Steering wheel angle sensor. Follow the instructions displayed on Tech 2.
  3. Read and clear ESP trouble codes.
  4. Test drive the vehicle.
  5. Check for any DTCs that have been generated. If there are any DTCs present, refer to the respective code for fault diagnosis and procedure.
  6. Disconnect Tech 2.

  1. Remove the centre console, see «CENTER CONSOLE (2006)»(ref-274851-S18034877482007122400000) «CENTER CONSOLE (2007)»(ref-278645-S13105446952008013000000) .
  2. Manual gearbox: Remove the gear lever housing, see «TO REMOVE»(ref-274821-S07838937202007122400000) . Automatic transmission: Remove the selector lever housing, see «TO REMOVE»(ref-274852-S02605481352007122400000) .
  3. Remove the gyro sensor. Use a large screwdriver to prise aside the air duct slightly to access the left-hand screw.
  4. Unplug the connector from the gyro sensor. NOTE: The connector has a locking device that must be released.

  1. Plug in the gyro sensor.
  2. Fit the gyro sensor to the bracket. Use a large screwdriver to prise aside the air duct slightly to access the left-hand screw. IMPORTANT: Fit the gyro sensor with the connector and arrow pointing forward in the car. Tightening torque up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 73514907: 10 Nm (7 lbf ft) Tightening torque from and including Vehicle Identification Number 73514908: 8 Nm (6 lbf ft)
  3. Manual gearbox: Fit the gear lever housing, see «TO FIT»(ref-274821-S04185268972007122400000) . Automatic transmission: Fit the selector lever housing, see «TO FIT»(ref-274852-S36015708872007122400000) .
  4. Fit the centre console, see «TO FIT»(ref-274851-S11096040382007122400000) .

Calibration

In order for the microprocessor to know the straight-ahead position (0-position), the sensor must first be calibrated. When calibrating, the steering wheel angle sensor receives information that the steering wheel and the road wheels are in 0 position (straight-ahead).

Calibration must be performed after working on the front assembly or after changing the steering wheel angle sensor. This is done as described in CALIBRATION OF STEERING WHEEL ANGLE SENSOR .

If the correction value is 15°, the system is disabled and the TCS OFF/ESP OFF INDICATOR LAMP comes on.
