DESCRIPTION
Starter is a brush-type, series-wound electric motor with an overrunning clutch. Field frame is enclosed by commutator end frame and drive bushing and carries pole shoes and field coils. A spline armature shaft drive end carries drive assembly.
Circuit Test
- Ensure battery is fully charged and electrical connections are clean and tight. With ignition switch in crank position, measure voltage at spade terminal of starter solenoid. If reading is at least 8 volts, go to step 3).
- If reading is not as specified, measure voltage at ignition switch. If reading is at least 8 volts, check wiring between ignition switch and starter solenoid. If reading is not as specified, replace ignition switch.
- Measure voltage at field terminal of starter solenoid. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair or replace starter. If reading is not as specified, replace starter solenoid.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove undercover. Remove axle shafts from differential. Remove hot air tubes. Remove clutch slave cylinder from manual transmission and wire aside. DO NOT disconnect slave cylinder hose from slave cylinder.
- On automatic (Tiptronic) transmission, remove gearshift cable fork head at neutral safety switch actuating lever. Remove bracket securing gearshift cable to transmission, and wire cable aside. Disconnect electrical connector from neutral safety switch.
- Remove stabilizer bar from vehicle. Place a transmission jack under transmission. Remove 6 bolts securing transmission rear support to vehicle body. Lower transmission slightly.
- On all models, remove upper starter bolt from starter. Starter is located on right side of transmission. Remove protective cap and electrical wires from starter. (Scheme 1) Remove lower starter bolt and ground strap. Remove starter. Inspect flexplate/flywheel teeth for damage. Repair as needed.
Installation
Ensure sufficient space exists between starter electrical wires. Install protective cap over electrical connections at starter. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Check starter and gear selector operation. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Note. DO NOT lubricate transmission case sintered sleeve (bushing) with grease or oil. In addition, DO NOT clean bushing with chemical solutions.
