DESCRIPTION

Starter is a brush-type, series-wound electric motor with an overrunning clutch. Field frame is enclosed by commutator end frame and drive bushing, and carries pole shoes and field coils. A spline armature shaft drive end carries drive assembly.

Removal & Installation (With Tiptronic Auto. Trans.)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine guard and rear undercover. Detach hot air tubes to right and left of transmission.
2. Loosen 6 transmission mounting bolts, and lower transmission about 3/8" (10 mm). Disconnect wires from solenoid terminals. Detach wire clamp from body and tie-strap from starter. Detach suction oil pipe from body side member.
3. Remove starter bolts and ground strap. Lift starter out and rotate starter pinion toward engine oil filter. Longitudinally rotate starter 180 degrees so that solenoid faces transmission. Carefully remove starter from below. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (With Man. Trans.)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove undercover. Remove hot air tube located next to transmission. Detach axle shafts from differential flange.
2. Disconnect wires from solenoid. Remove nut from upper starter mount. Remove nut/bolt from right side of starter. Remove lower mount bolt and ground strap. Remove starter and rotate it until solenoid points toward half-shaft. Carefully remove starter from below.
3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure tie-straps are used to secure wires and cable. Apply a thin coat of copper paste (Optimolly HT) to axle shaft/drive flange bolts.
