Removal Procedure

CAUTIONRefer to BATTERY DISCONNECT CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Record all preset and theft codes from the radio.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  3. Verify that all the electrical components are off such as interior lights, all doors are closed, the underhood lamp, etc.
  4. Remove the retaining bolt from the battery negative cable (3).
  5. Remove the battery negative cable from the battery (5).
  6. Position the battery negative cable away from any body ground.

Installation Procedure

  1. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, all doors are closed, the underhood lamp, etc.
  2. Clean corrosion from the negative battery cable using a metal brush.
  3. Install the battery negative cable (3) to the battery (5). NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) in Cautions and Notices.
  4. Install the retaining bolt to the battery negative cable. Tighten Tighten the battery negative cable to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
  5. Reset the radio stations and the clock.

IMPORTANTWhenever battery cables are being replaced, always be certain to use a replacement cable that is the same type, size and length. Some positive (+) cables have additional feed wires attached to them and some negative (-) cables have additional ground leads attached. Always be certain to route the replacement battery cable in exactly the same manner as the original cable.
  1. Remove the battery. Refer to «BATTERY REPLACEMENT»(ref-186689-S11264788092005083100000) .
  2. Remove the battery tray.
  3. Remove the ground bolt (3) and the negative battery cable from the body.
  4. Remove the ground bolt (1) and the negative battery cable from the transaxle housing.
  5. Remove the cable (2) from the harness retainers and remove the cable from the vehicle.

  1. Position the negative battery cable (2) into the vehicle. NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Connect the cable to the transaxle housing. Secure with the ground bolt (1). Tighten Tighten the ground bolt to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).
  3. Connect the cable to the body. Secure with the ground bolt (3). Tighten Tighten the body ground bolt to 14 N.m (124 lb in).
  4. Route the cable and secure it in the harness retainer.
  5. Install the battery tray.
  6. Install the battery. Refer to «BATTERY REPLACEMENT»(ref-186689-S11264788092005083100000) .

IMPORTANTWhenever battery cables are being replaced, always be certain to use a replacement cable that is the same type, size and length. Some positive (+) cables have additional feed wires attached to them and some negative (-) cables have additional ground leads attached. Always be certain to route the replacement battery cable in exactly the same manner as the original cable.
  1. Remove the battery from the vehicle. Refer to «BATTERY REPLACEMENT»(ref-186689-S11264788092005083100000) .
  2. Remove the plastic insulator from the positive (+) battery terminal.
  3. Remove the nut (5) from the positive (+) battery cables.
  4. Separate the positive (+) battery cable (4) from the battery positive fuse block feed cable.
  5. Remove the positive (+) battery cable harness loom from the harness retainers.
  6. Remove the positive (+) battery cable from the harness loom being careful not to damage the other wires in the harness.
  7. Disconnect the retaining nut and the cable from the starter solenoid.
  8. Remove the cable from the vehicle.

Scheme 23: Installation Procedure
  1. Position the positive (+) battery cable (4) into the vehicle.
  2. Route the positive (+) cable into the harness loom. NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Connect the cable to the starter solenoid. Secure the cable with the retaining nut. Tighten Tighten the positive (+) battery cable-to-starter solenoid retaining nut to 9 N.m (78 lb in).
  4. Install the battery positive fuse block feed cable to positive (+) battery cable. Secure with the nut (5). Tighten Tighten the positive (+) battery cable-to-relay block 1 feed cable retaining nut to 9 N.m (78 lb in).
  5. Tape the loom to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the harness.
  6. Install the positive (+) battery cable harness loom to the harness retainers.
  7. Install the plastic insulator to the positive (+) battery cable.
  8. Install the battery to the vehicle. Refer to «BATTERY REPLACEMENT»(ref-186689-S11264788092005083100000) .

  1. Position the battery positive fuse block feed cable into the vehicle.
  2. Install the battery positive fuse block feed cable to the under hood fuse block.
  3. Install the battery positive fuse block feed cable to positive (+) battery cable. Secure with the nut (5). Tighten Tighten the positive (+) battery cable-to-relay block 1 feed cable retaining nut to 9 N.m (78 lb in).
  4. Tape the loom to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the harness.
  5. Install the positive (+) battery cable harness loom to the harness retainers.
  6. Install the plastic insulator to the positive (+) battery cable.
  7. Install the battery to the vehicle. Refer to «BATTERY REPLACEMENT»(ref-186689-S11264788092005083100000) .

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable (3) from the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable (1) from the positive (+) battery terminal.
  3. Remove the bolt (4) and the battery hold down bracket (2).
  4. Remove the battery (5) from the vehicle.

  1. Install the battery (5) into the vehicle. Position the battery into the carrier. NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Install the battery hold down bracket (2). Secure with the bolt (4). Tighten Tighten the battery hold down bracket bolt to 8 N.m (71 lb in).
  3. Connect the positive (+) battery cable (1) to the positive (+) battery terminal. Tighten Tighten the positive battery cable-to-battery terminal to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
  4. Install the negative (-) battery terminal. Tighten Tighten the negative battery cable-to-battery terminal to 1 N.m (11 lb ft).

Scheme 29: BATTERY DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
CAUTIONBatteries produce explosive gases, contain corrosive acid, and supply levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns. Therefore, to reduce the risk of personal injury when working near a battery: Always shield your eyes and avoid leaning over the battery whenever possible. Do not expose the battery to open flames or sparks. Do not allow the battery electrolyte to contact the eyes or the skin. Flush immediately and thoroughly any contacted areas with water and get medical help. Follow each step of the jump starting procedure in order. Treat both the booster and the discharged batteries carefully when using the jumper cables.
IMPORTANTBecause of the materials used in the manufacture of automotive lead-acid batteries, dealers and service shops that handle them are subject to various regulations issued by OSHA, EPA, DOT, and various state or local agencies. Other regulations may also apply in other locations. Always know and follow these regulations when handling batteries.

Batteries that are no longer wanted must be disposed of by an approved battery recycler and must never be thrown in the trash or sent to a landfill.

Batteries that are not part of the vehicle itself, not the battery under the hood, must only be transported on public streets for business purposes via approved hazardous material transportation procedures.

Battery storage, charging and testing facilities in repair shops must meet various requirements for ventilation, safety equipment, material segregation, etc.

The maintenance free battery is standard. There are no vent plugs in the cover. The battery is completely sealed except for 2 small vent holes in the side. These vent holes allow the small amount of gas that is produced in the battery to escape.

The battery has 3 functions as a major source of energy

  1. Engine cranking
  2. Voltage stabilizer
  3. Alternate source of energy with generator overload

The battery specification label, example below, contains information about the following

  1. The test ratings
  2. The original equipment catalog number
  3. The recommended replacement model number

When a battery is replaced use a battery with similar ratings. Refer to the battery specification label on the original battery or refer to BATTERY USAGE .
