Service Programming System (SPS)
For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.
Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.
| IMPORTANT | DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO. |
Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module
- Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger, may cause programming failure or control module damage. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL). Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
- The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
- Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
- DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
- DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.
Audio Amplifier Programming and Setup
There is no setup procedure that needs to be performed for the amplifier on this vehicle.
Communication Interface Module Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.
Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.
EBCM Reprogramming
If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.
ECM Reprogramming
If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup
This device requires no programming or setup.
Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | Before the passenger presence system (PPS) can be checked for preloads the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS. When the preload test is perform, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin illuminating at varying intensity. This is normal operation during the preload test procedure and does not indicate additional system faults. |
If the PPS is replaced or serviced, perform the preload test procedure for the PPS. Refer to Passenger Presence System Preload Test for the preload test procedure.
Radio Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.
Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Programming Using Existing Keys
| IMPORTANT | Use this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using the existing vehicle keys. Because of how vehicle key information and theft deterrent passwords are stored within the TDM, the Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. Performing this procedure first allows the scan tool to extract the key information and passwords from the old TDM prior to its removal. Failure to perform this step will result in the failure to learn the existing vehicle keys and new vehicle keys will be required when replacing the TDM. Do not use the scan tool for any other programming operations while performing this procedure. Doing so will erase the stored data retrieved from the original TDM and cause the set-up to fail. |
- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
- With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Select the Prepare Module for TDM Setup calibration file.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
- With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure.
- Observe the scan tool. After approximately 10 minutes, the scan tool will display Programming Successful.
- With the scan tool, select TDM in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Replacement/Setup data list.
- Select Step 1.
- Select Use Existing Keys.
- Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions. The scan tool will then display Replace Module Per Service Manual. At this time, replace the theft deterrent module (TDM). Refer to «Theft Deterrent Module Replacement»(ref-267946-S15115564402007101700000) .
- After the new TDM has been installed, using the scan tool, select Step 2 and follow the on-screen instructions. Once this has been completed, turn the ignition OFF.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
- With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Select the VTD Learn for LE5 or LZ9 Powertrain System calibration or the VTD Learn for LNF Powertrain System calibration based on which engine RPO the vehicle is equipped with.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
- With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.
- At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure.
- Observe the scan tool. After approximately 10 minutes, the scan tool will display Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the fuel continue password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
- Turn OFF the ignition and wait 5 seconds.
- With a master vehicle key, start the vehicle. The ECM has now learned the new fuel continue password.
- If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to «Adding Keys»(ref-267945-S36687060812007101700000) .

- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select TDM in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Replacement/Setup data list.
- Select Step 1.
- Select Use New Keys.
- Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions. Once this has been completed, turn the ignition OFF.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
- With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Select the VTD Learn for LE5 or LZ9 Powertrain System calibration or the VTD Learn for LNF Powertrain System calibration based on which engine RPO the vehicle is equipped with.

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup
- The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
- Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
- If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
