BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID
Note. BTSI solenoid may also be known as shift interlock actuator.
Gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position without depressing brake pedal if ignition is on. When pressure is applied to brake pedal, BTSI solenoid is de-energized to release gearshift lever from "P" position. Stoplamp switch interrupts circuit to mechanically unlock gearshift lever by de-energizing BTSI solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Intermittents
Intermittent faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Check for loose, bent or corroded terminals and terminal tension. Check for cut, bare or pinched wiring. Simulate the condition that is potentially causing the intermittent connection, either by wiggling the connections or the wiring, test driving or performing other operations while observing scan tool, DVOM or other testing equipment.
Note. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid may also be known as shift interlock actuator.
Actuator is located on steering column. (Scheme 6) Remove lower steering column cover. Pull locking tab outward from block side of actuator. (Scheme 7) Ensure gearshift lever is in "N" position. Press on adjuster block to compress internal adjuster spring and engage adjuster teeth. Slide adjuster block as far away from solenoid as possible. Move gearshift lever into "P" position. Push locking tab back into adjuster block. Ensure proper operation of system. Install lower steering column cover.

STOPLAMP SWITCH
Note. Proper stoplamp switch adjustment is essential. Improper stoplamp switch adjustment may cause brake drag, heat buildup and excessive brake lining wear. Adjust the stoplamp switch and cruise control switch at the same time. (Scheme 8) The adjustment procedures for the stoplamp switch and the cruise control switch are identical.
- With the brake pedal fully released, ensure that the stoplamp plunger is fully depressed against the brake pedal shanks. (Scheme 9) Insert the stoplamp switch and the cruise control switch (if equipped) into the brake pedal bracket. (Scheme 10)
- Push the brake pedal forward in order to set the brake push rod into the booster. Pull the brake pedal to the rear, against the internal stop. The stoplamp switch and cruise control switch will be adjusted. Inspect the stoplamp for proper operation.
