Engine Cooling System: Removal & Installation Pontiac GTO IV

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the coolant recovery hose from the radiator filler neck, then remove the hose from the fan shroud and manifold air flow (MAF) sensor air cleaner housing retaining clips.
2. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-201059-S03425061632005102400000) .
3. Remove the wheelhouse liner to coolant recovery reservoir assembly fastener.
4. Remove the reservoir assembly attaching screws (1).
5. Disconnect the coolant level switch electrical connector.
6. Remove the reservoir from under the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

1. Position the reservoir.
2. Connect the coolant level switch electrical connector.
3. Install the reservoir assembly attaching screws (1). Tighten: Tighten the reservoir attaching screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
4. Install the wheelhouse liner to coolant recovery reservoir assembly fastener.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Connect the coolant recovery hose to the radiator filler neck, then connect the hose to the fan shroud and MAF sensor air cleaner housing retaining clips.

1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
2. Loosen and remove the radiator inlet hose from the radiator.
3. Loosen and remove the radiator inlet hose from the water pump (1).

1. Position the radiator hose.
2. Install the radiator inlet hose clamp to the water pump (1).
3. Install the radiator inlet hose clamp at the radiator.
4. Refill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .

1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
2. Loosen and remove the radiator outlet hose from the radiator (1).
3. Loosen and remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing (2).
4. Remove the radiator hose.

1. Position the radiator hose.
2. Install the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing (2).
3. Install the radiator outlet hose clamp at the radiator (1).
4. Refill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air intake duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement»(ref-201043-S28051882602005102400000) .
3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
4. Remove the radiator bypass hose and the coolant reservoir hose from the radiator fan shroud clips.
5. Remove the radiator bypass hose to radiator clamp (1) and position the hose aside.
6. Remove the coolant reservoir hose (2) to coolant reservoir at the radiator and position aside. Remove the radiator outlet hose. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet»(ref-201062-S08573995252005102400000) .
7. Disconnect the left side cooling fan motor electrical connector (2).
8. Disconnect the right side cooling fan motor electrical connector (3).
9. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the water pump housing and position aside.
10. Push down on the fan shroud locking tab (1), then lift the fan and should assembly upwards to remove.

1. Install the fan and shroud assembly.
2. Connect the right side cooling fan motor electrical connector (3).
3. Connect the left side cooling fan motor electrical connector (2).
4. Connect the radiator inlet hose to the water pump housing.
5. Install the radiator outlet hose. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet»(ref-201062-S08573995252005102400000) .
6. Install the coolant reservoir hose (2) to coolant reservoir at the radiator.
7. Install the radiator bypass hose to radiator clamp (1).
8. Install the radiator bypass hose and the coolant reservoir hose to the radiator fan shroud clips.
9. Refill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
10. Install the air intake duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement»(ref-201043-S28051882602005102400000) .
11. Connect the negative battery cable.

1. Remove the cooling fan and shroud assembly. Refer to «Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric»(ref-201062-S00246436722005102400000) .
2. Disconnect the intermediate fan motor electrical connector (1), then remove the motor assembly wire harness (2) from the fan shroud retaining clips. Remove four screws (3), attaching the fan motor and the fan assemblies to the fan shroud. Remove the fan motor and wiring from the fan shroud.

1. Position the fan motor assembly. NOTE: Refer to «Fastener Notice»(ref-201051-S00007810802005102400000) Install four screws (3), attaching the fan motor and the fan assemblies to the fan shroud. Tighten: Tighten the fan motor screws to 5 N.m (62 lb in). Install the motor assembly wire harness (2) to the fan shroud retaining clips, then connect the intermediate fan motor electrical connector (1).
2. Install the fan and shroud assembly. Refer to «Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric»(ref-201062-S00246436722005102400000) .

1. Remove the cover from fuse and relay block.
2. Remove the cooling fan relay no. 1, (1) from fuse and relay block.
3. Remove the cooling fan relay no. 2, (2) from fuse and relay block.
4. Remove the cooling fan relay no. 3, (3) from fuse and relay block.

1. Install the cooling fan relay no. 1, (1) in the fuse and relay block.
2. Install the cooling fan relay no. 2, (2) in the fuse and relay block.
3. Install the cooling fan relay no. 3, (3) in the fuse and relay block.
4. Install the cover to fuse and relay block.

1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
2. Reposition the outlet hose clamp at the water pump inlet.
3. Remove the outlet hose from the water pump inlet.
4. Remove the water pump inlet bolts.
5. Remove the water pump inlet.
6. Remove the thermostat housing.

1. Install a new thermostat housing.
2. Install the water pump inlet with thermostat.
3. Install the water pump inlet bolts. Tighten: Tighten the water pump inlet bolts to 14 N.m (10 lb ft).
4. Install the outlet hose to the water pump inlet.
5. Position the outlet hose clamp at the water outlet.
6. Fill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .

1. Drain a gallon of coolant. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
2. Remove the throttle air body assembly (1). Refer to «Throttle Body Assembly Replacement»(ref-201043-S29815054362005102400000)
3. Remove the coolant air bleed hose (2).
4. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe mounting bolts (3).
5. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe (4) and O-rings (5).

1. Position the coolant air bleed pipe (4) and O-rings (5) on the cylinder heads.
2. Install the mounting bolts for the coolant air bleed pipe.
3. Tighten the coolant air bleed pipe mounting bolts (3). Tighten: Tighten the coolant air bleed pipe cover bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
4. Install the coolant air bleed hose (2).
5. Install the throttle body assembly (1). Refer to «Throttle Body Assembly Replacement»(ref-201043-S29815054362005102400000) .
6. Refill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000)

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to «Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control System Description»(ref-201043-S25600921622005102400000) .
3. Loosen two intake duct clamps (3), then remove the duct.
4. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory»(ref-201074-S33987923942005102400000) .
5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
6. Disconnect the two heater hoses (1) and the inlet (2) and outlet (3) hoses from the water pump.
7. Remove the two bolts (1) from the drive belt tensioner (2).
8. Remove the water pump as follows: Remove the six water pump retaining bolts (1). Remove the water pump (2). Remove the water pump gaskets (3) and discard.
9. Clean and inspect the water pump mating surface.

Scheme 4

1. Install the water pump as follows: Position the water pump gaskets (3) to the water pump. Position the water pump (2) to the cylinder block. Install the six water pump retaining bolts (1). Progressively tighten the water pump retaining bolts in two steps: Tighten: Tighten the water pump retaining bolts, first pass, to 15 N.m (11 lb ft). Tighten the water pump retaining bolts, second pass to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
2. Install the two bolts (1) to the drive belt tensioner (2).
3. Connect the two heater hoses (1) and the inlet (2) and outlet (3) hoses to the water pump.
4. Refill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-201062-S03035929722005102400000) .
5. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to «Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory»(ref-201074-S33987923942005102400000) .
6. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to «Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control System Description»(ref-201043-S25600921622005102400000) .
7. Connect the negative battery cable.

1. Remove five upper shroud to radiator retainers (1).
2. Lift the shroud (2) on the right side, then release the locating tab on the left side.

1. Lift the shroud (2) on the right side, then install the locating tab on the left side.
2. Install five upper shroud to radiator retainers (1).

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air intake duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement»(ref-201043-S28051882602005102400000) .
3. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to «Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric»(ref-201062-S00246436722005102400000) .
4. Remove the radiator outlet hose. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet»(ref-201062-S08573995252005102400000) .
5. Remove the inlet hose. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet»(ref-201062-S40887854372005102400000) .
6. Remove the bumper front fascia. Refer to «Fascia Replacement - Front Bumper»(ref-201063-S19385969452005102400000) in Bumpers.
7. Release the two condenser-to-radiator retaining clips as follows: Press down on the 1st locking tab (1) while lifting on the condenser assembly. Press down on the 2nd locking tab while lifting on the condenser assembly, then slightly pull the condenser assembly forward to clear the radiator mounting lugs.
8. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines, if equipped. Refer to «Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement»(ref-201084-S09209827122005102400000) in Automatic Transmission.
9. Remove the radiator as follows: Lift the radiator upwards. Move the radiator rearwards on the left side, then across to the left side to allow the right side to clear the mounting brackets.

1. Install the radiator as follows: Move the radiator rearwards on the left side, then across to the left side to allow the right side to clear the mounting brackets. Lower the radiator into the lower insulators.
2. Connect the transmission cooler lines, if equipped. Refer to «Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement»(ref-201084-S09209827122005102400000) in Automatic Transmission.
3. Install the two condenser-to-radiator retaining clips as follows: Slightly pull the condenser assembly forward to clear the radiator mounting lugs. Ensure both locking tab (1) are seated.
4. Install the bumper front fascia. Refer to «Fascia Replacement - Front Bumper»(ref-201063-S19385969452005102400000) in Bumpers.
5. Install the coolant inlet hose. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet»(ref-201062-S40887854372005102400000) .
6. Install the coolant outlet hose. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet»(ref-201062-S08573995252005102400000) .
7. Install the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to «Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric»(ref-201062-S00246436722005102400000) .
8. Install the air intake duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement»(ref-201043-S28051882602005102400000) .
9. Connect the negative battery cable.
10. Start and run the engine until the coolant is at operating temperature.
11. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, check the transmission fluid level.
12. Tighten any loose connections, as necessary.

1. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-201059-S03425061632005102400000) in General Information.
2. Remove four oil pan shield bolts (1), then the oil pan shield.
3. Remove four lower air baffle extension screws (1), then lower the rear of the lower air baffle extension (2).
4. Slide the lower air baffle to disengage from the lower front air baffle.
5. Remove four lower front air baffle-to-crossmember fasteners (3), then remove the front lower air baffle.

1. Position the lower front air baffle to the crossmember, then install four lower front air baffle-to-crossmember fasteners (3).
2. Slide the lower air baffle into place.
3. Install four lower air baffle extension screws (1).
4. Install four oil pan shield bolts (1), then the oil pan shield. Tighten: Tighten the oil pan shield bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
5. Lower the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-201059-S03425061632005102400000) in General Information.

The cooling system's function is to maintain an efficient engine operating temperature during all engine speeds and operating conditions. The cooling system is designed to remove approximately one-third of the heat produced by the burning of the air-fuel mixture. When the engine is cold, the system cools slowly or not at all. This allows the engine to warm quickly.
