Steering Wheel - Steering Column 17 illustrations ~578 words

Remove

  1. 1. Position steering column in fully extended position • Release lever (1) • Fully extend steering column, then secure lever
  1. 2. Disconnect battery negative lead
  2. 3. Remove airbag from steering wheel • Release clip – Use suitable tool, then slide off • Disconnect harness connector (1)
  1. 4. Immobilise steering wheel in centre position
  2. 5. Remove steering wheel • Disconnect harness connector (1) for cruise control (if installed) • Disconnect harness connector (2) from harness connector for horn switch • Remove bolt (3) • Feed 2x harness through aperture in steering wheel
  1. 6. Remove 2x cowling (1) from steering column • Remove 2x screw
  1. 7. For vehicles with ESP, remove steering angle sensor (1) • Release 4x clip • Disconnect harness connector (2)
  1. 8. Remove combination switch and contact unit (1) from steering column • Push spring loaded locking device (2) upwards • Release screw under locking device • Disconnect 4x harness connector • Release clip

Note. Screw also acts as locking device for contact unit.

  1. 9. Remove immobiliser antenna (1) from ignition lock • Disconnect harness connector (2) • Release clip
  1. 10. Release harness from steering column • Release clip (1)
  1. 11. Release ignition lock from steering column • Remove screw (1)
  1. 12. Remove ignition lock from steering column • Disconnect 2x harness connector, then move harness to one side • Turn ignition key to position 3 • Release 2x retaining tab (1), then pull out ignition lock
  1. 13. Remove upper trim panel (1) from instrument panel • Release 4x clip, locator
  1. 14. Remove lower trim panel (1) from instrument panel • Release 4x clip, 2x locator
  1. 15. Release steering column from intermediate shaft • Remove bolt (1) • Release bolt (2), then slide coupling downwards
  1. 16. Remove steering column from instrument panel crossmember • Remove 2x bolt (1) • Release from locator

Install

  1. 17. Install new steering column to instrument panel crossmember • Secure to locator • Install 2x bolt (1) 21 Nm
  1. 18. Secure steering column to intermediate shaft • Slide coupling upwards, then install bolt (1) 21 Nm • Secure bolt (2) 21 Nm
  1. 19. Install lower trim panel (1) to instrument panel • Secure 2x locator, 4x clip
  1. 20. Install upper trim panel (1) to instrument panel • Secure locator, 4x clip
  1. 21. Install ignition lock to steering column • Turn ignition key to position 3 • Secure 2x retaining tab (1) – Push ignition lock in • Connect 2x harness connector
  1. 22. Secure ignition lock to steering column • Install screw (1)
  1. 23. Secure harness to steering column • Secure clip (1)
  1. 24. Install immobiliser antenna (1) to ignition lock • Secure clip • Connect harness connector (2)
  1. 25. Install combination switch and contact unit (1) to steering column • Secure clip • Connect 4x harness connector • Tighten screw to release spring loaded locking device (2)
  1. 26. For vehicles with ESP, install steering angle sensor (1) • Connect harness connector (2) • Secure 4x clip
  1. 27. Install 2x cowling (1) to steering column • Install 2x screw
  1. 28. Install steering wheel • Feed 2x harness through aperture in steering wheel • Connect harness connector (1) for cruise control (if installed) • Connect harness connector (2) to harness connector for horn switch • Install new bolt (3) 44 Nm
  1. 29. Install airbag to steering wheel • Connect harness connector (1) • Push on to secure clip
  1. 30. Connect battery negative lead
  2. 31. Program all volatile memories
