Functional Description

Wait, Measure, Display Modes

There are three modes for park pilot operation:

Wait Mode

The park pilot is not used, collects information on the bus and waits for the mode to be changed.

This mode is adopted if the following conditions apply:

  • PAS switched off (via switch or vehicle speed >25 km/h)
  • Selector lever (automatic transmission) in "P" position
  • Battery voltage is outside the range 9-16V

Measure Mode

The sensors are active; the park pilot calculates distances between the vehicle and obstructions.

Faults determined during self-diagnosis are displayed in this mode.

This mode is adopted if the following conditions apply:

  • PAS switched on (via switch or reverse gear)
  • Vehicle speed <10 km/h
  • and in addition: No obstructions in the defined area

Display Mode

The park pilot is in use; all functions are active. The driver receives information in acoustic form.

Faults determined during self-diagnosis are displayed in this mode.

In addition to the conditions for measure mode:

  • No fault present in the system fault memory
  • An obstruction is within the defined display area

Note. If the distance between the vehicle and the obstruction is constant and greater than 30 cm, the obstruction is displayed for a maximum of 3 seconds; the system then switches to measure mode.

The system can change the mode automatically.

The following influences can lead to change of mode:

  • Vehicle speed
  • >10 km/h, system is not active
  • <10 km/h, system is active

Condition: PAS must have been switched to active via reverse gear or switch.

During forwards driving, the PAS automatically switches off again, if the vehicle speed exceeds 25 km/h. (corresponds to a return to wait mode)

  • Reverse gear was engaged, front and rear sensors are active
  • An object is detected in the vicinity of the vehicle, front or rear sensors are active
  • A trailer is connected to the vehicle, rear sensors are deactivated

Display in Instrument

In the case of malfunction of the park pilot, the warning indicator in the instrument is actuated via the LSCAN and illuminates constantly. If the indicator flashes, there is a sensor fault which may be caused by dirt, for example.
