How to Replace the Steering Column Opel Senator B

Steering Column, Replace

Remove

Remove steering spindle (see operation "Upper Steering Spindle, Replace").

Pull off wiring harness for steering and ignition lock from contact part.

Unscrew bolt (1) for steering column support from angled stop on bulkhead.

Illustration shows model that has steering wheel with height adjustment.

Remove shear plates from under instrument panel.

Centre-punch centre of shear bolt (2).

Drill hole in shear bolt with 1/8" bit of commercially available bolt extractor.

Drive bolt extractor into hole drilled and unscrew shear bolt.

SENATOR - B: On steering column which has steering wheel with height adjustment, two 4 mm (0.16 in.) washers are inserted.

Clamp steering column in vice.

Remove steering and ignition lock housing.

Drill off shear bolt head using 8.5 mm (0.33 in.) drill.

Replace steering column.

Replace lower steering spindle bearing (1) in steering column with foam rubber seal (2).

Press in two knobs opposite each other and pull bearing out of steering column.

Long sealing lip of bearing must point downwards.

Fill bearing cavity with Multi-purpose Grease 19 48 524 (90 001 825).

Install

Fasten steering and ignition lock housing with new shear bolt (hex head shears off).

Loosely premount steering column shear plates on instrument panel and steering column support on angled stop on bulkhead.

SENATOR - B: On steering column which has steering height adjustment, insert two washers.

Insert wiring harness for steering and ignition lock in contact part.

Install steering spindle, switch housing, signal switch and wiper switch, signal switch panelling, lock cylinder and steering wheel on steering column (see operation "Upper Steering Spindle, Replace").

Attach steering column assembly free of tension.

Bolt steering column support to angled stop on bulkhead - torque 22 Nm (16 lbf. ft.).

Bolt shear plate. On left side, use shear bolt (hex head shears off). On right side, use new self - locking hex nut (washer) - torque - 22 Nm (16 lbf. ft.).

Push steering spindle upwards until stop on steering spindle ball bearing is reached.

In this position, tighten clamp bolt for steering spindle - torque 22 Nm (16 lbf. ft.).
