New Trouble Code Designations
The first step on the road to world - wide uniformity of engine control units is the introduction of new, five - character trouble codes.
The trouble codes are displayed on TECH 1A in five characters (e. g. P 0 345):
1 st character: Letter "P" (Powertrain = Engine / transmission)
The codes "C" (chassis systems) and "B" (body systems) will be added at a later date.
2nd character: Digit "0" (legally prescribed trouble code)
or
digit "1 " (manufacturer - specific trouble code)
3rd - 5th characters: Three - digit number (fault number)
